Topic: European symbols Duration: 45 minutes Detailed goals regarding the range of information Student: Knows the European symbols; Knows the symbolism of the European flag; Knows where the European flag can be seen in Poland. Multimedia resources Presentation: Symbols of the European Union Audio recording: EU flag Interactive quiz Online dictionary Lesson plan/procedure 1 Warm-up Interacon forms: whole class Duration: 4 minutes Teacher asks students some basic questions about the European Union: Can they name any EU countries? How many of them are altogether? When did Poland become a member state? What symbols are associated with the European Union? Students brainstorm for ideas. If they are struggling, the teacher should assure them that they will find out more during the lesson. 2 Main stage 2.1. Introduction of the target language – presentation and true/false Interacon forms: individual, whole class Duration: 15 minutes Teacher tells students that now they will see a presentation on the symbols of the European Union. He/She plays the presentation, slide after slide, explaining the information given. Then teacher distributes a true/false task (below). He/She asks students to read the sentences given and see if they can answer any of them. The presentation is played a second time. Students work individually to complete the task. Then the answers are checked with the whole class. Decide if the following sentences are true or false, and tick the appropriate column. True False 1. There are four official symbols of the European Union. 2. There are six gold and six yellow stars on the European flag. 3. The European Anthem’s text was written by Beethoven. 4. Ode to Joy is a part of the 9th symphony. 5. The Europe Day falls in spring. 6. The European Anthem was adopted earlier than the European motto. Answers: 1 true, 2 false (all twelve stars are either gold or yellow), 3 false (the tune is Beethoven’s work, not the text), 4 true, 5 true, 6 true 2.2. Target language extension – recording Interacon forms: individual, pairs, whole class Duration: 15 minutes Teacher tells students that now they will learn more about the European flag. He/She elicits what students associate with the blue colour on the flag. What do they think the stars represent? Teacher can also ask why, in their opinion, there are twelve stars and why they are arranged in a circle. Then, he/she tells students that they will have a chance to find out whether their predictions were correct. Students are told to listen to the recording carefully as they will be asked questions afterwards. The recording is played once. Teacher distributes comprehension questions (below). Students work individually and answer as many of them as they can. Then the recording is played a second time for students to complete and check their answers. They can compare their ideas in pairs. Finally, the answers are checked with the whole class. Briefly answer the questions. 1. From how many proposals was the European flag chosen? 2. How many people designed the flag? 3. Why are the stars in a circle? What does it symbolise? 4. Is the number of stars smaller or higher than the number of the EU countries? 5. What is the general meaning of the number of stars on the flag? 6. What flags are displayed on official buildings in Poland? Answers: 1 101, 2 two, 3 it symbolises unity, harmony and equality, 4 smaller, 5 it is a symbol of completeness and perfection, 6 the flag of Europe and the national flag 2.3. Target language consolidation – quiz Interaction forms: individual Duration: 8 minutes Students do the word search. Their task is to find the hidden words they have come across in the lesson. The words can be found vertically, horizontally or diagonally, in both directions. The hidden words are: anthem, circle, country, design, Europe, flag, motto, star, symbol. 3 Closing stage Interaction forms: whole class Duration: 3 minutes To conclude the lesson, teacher elicits from students what the European Union flag looks like; what the European anthem is; when Europe Day is celebrated and what the European motto says. Additional information Teacher advises students that the www.scholaris.pl website offers a computer application in the form of a multimedia dictionary presenting correct pronunciation together with translations of words and phrases learned during the lesson.
