Civic and Ethnic Nationalism in European Union Identity Creation Civic and Ethnic Nationalism in European Union Identity Creation Andreas Bjørnbekk Spring 2020 Master’s Thesis in History Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History University of Oslo ii Abstract: When in 1984 the European Council decided to appoint a committee to study which measures it could adopt in order to establish a ‘people’s Europe’, the European Economic Community entered a stage in its history which essentially began a process of national identity-building. Up until that point, the European project had mainly revolved around economic and institutional integration, without adopting vital aspects of what constitutes, in Benedict Anderson’s words, an ‘imagined community’. The recommendations from the Committee on a People’s Europe were clear; to es- tablish symbols and initiatives which common people could identify with and participate in. Dur- ing the two decades following the report, the European Union would come to fly its own flag, play its own anthem, provide four freedoms, and establish a common currency – many of them, if not all, innovations introduced in the pursuit of a common European identity. This thesis examines several EU identity creation initiatives, with the aim of understanding which concepts of nationalism they were founded on or intended to promote. As such, the thesis deals extensively with the concept of nationalism and identity, and splits the concept into two distinct categories: civic and ethnic nationalism. In doing so, the thesis dissects the Union’s documents and prior academic research to study some of the most prominent signifiers of the European Union to date. iii Acknowledgments The writing of this thesis has been one of my life’s most challenging undertakings. But economic and institutional integration would soon bind old rivals and newfound allies closer together, and in the course of the latter half of Europe’s bloodiest century, a Community became a Union.2 As the memory of war faded and the immediate reasons for common solutions appeared to dwindle, it became clear to European officials that the European project required a more profound foundation on which to build.3 Plagued by ‘eurosclerosis’ in the

    The Occult Undercurrents of the European Union The subject that has been headline news in all the papers and television in the UK for some time is – the European Referendum. Oh no! You cry, not more of that! It is, however, not just a political or economic issue, about massive immigration or European laws against our own, or even our sovereignty which is extremely important; for if we stay in Europe we can say goodbye to our democracy which has been our standard since the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215! Do we really want to be a small ‘one twenty-eighth’ of the EU and ‘in thrall’ to unelected European bureaucrats? Valid reasons to ponder on are below, and these are facts that will not emerge from the lips of any ‘Remain’ or ‘Brexit’ proponent because the real reason we ought to leave is not political or economic, but spiritual! Whilst the politicians are boring everyone rigid with their tales of gloom and doom and instilling fear into those susceptible, it seems that they have no idea whatsoever of the true nature of the European beast, and yet she has shown us her true colours since her inception. The European beast has a spiritual heart disguised by its policy making powers. The Treaty of Rome, an international agreement, which brought into being the European Union, was signed on 25 th of March 1957 by Belgium, France, Luxemburg, Italy, the Netherlands and West Germany. Notice that it was called the ‘Treaty of Rome’ this is important, for, in short, the European Union demonstrates rebellion against God in more than one way, and is a revival of the old Holy Roman Empire.
