LEEPER PO Box 13086 Las Cruces, NM USA, 88013 [email protected] [1] Abstract. Blackburn & Sharp (1885: 146 & 147) described the first coccinellids found in Hawaii. The first documented introduction and successful establishment was of Rodolia cardinalis from Australia in 1890 (Swezey, 1923b: 300). This paper documents 167 coccinellid species as having been introduced to the Hawaiian Islands with forty-six (46) species considered established based on unpublished Hawaii State Department of Agriculture records and literature published in Hawaii. The paper also provides nomenclatural and taxonomic changes that have occurred in the Hawaiian records through time. INTRODUCTION The Coccinellidae comprise a large family in the Coleoptera with about 490 genera and 4200 species (Sasaji, 1971). The majority of coccinellid species introduced into Hawaii are predacious on insects and/or mites. Exceptions to this are two mycophagous coccinellids, Calvia decimguttata (Linnaeus) and Psyllobora vigintimaculata (Say). Of these, only P. vigintimaculata (Say) appears to be established, see discussion associated with that species’ listing. The members of the phytophagous subfamily Epilachninae are pests themselves and, to date, are not known to be established in Hawaii. None of the Coccinellidae in Hawaii are thought to be either endemic or indigenous. All have been either accidentally or purposely introduced. Three species, Scymnus discendens (= Diomus debilis LeConte), Scymnus ocellatus (=Scymnobius galapagoensis (Waterhouse)) and Scymnus vividus (= Scymnus (Pullus) loewii Mulsant) were described by Sharp (Blackburn & Sharp, 1885: 146 & 147) from specimens collected in the islands. There are, however, no records of introduction for these species prior to Sharp’s descriptions. -

While many studies have characterized effects of Bt maize on various carabid species, few have examined the potential acquisition of Cry toxins from live plants versus plant residue. In this study, we examined how live Bt maize and Bt maize residue affect acquisition of Cry1Ab in six species. Adult beetles were collected live from fields with either currentyear Bt maize, oneyearold Bt maize residue, twoyearold Bt maize residue, or fields without any Bt crops or residue for the past two years, and specimens were analyzed using ELISA. Observed Cry1Ab concentrations in the beetles were similar to that reported in previously published studies. Only one specimen of Cyclotrachelus iowensis acquired Cry1Ab from twoyearold maize residue. Three species acquired Cry1Ab from fields with either live plants or plant residue (Cyclotrachelus iowensis, Poecilus lucublandus, Poecilus chalcites), implying participation in both liveplant and residuebased food webs. Two species acquired toxin from fields with live plants, but not from fields with residue (Bembidion quadrimaculatum, Elaphropus incurvus), suggesting participation only in live plantbased food webs. -
Dartington Report on Beetles 2015
Report on beetles (Coleoptera) collected from the Dartington Hall Estate, 2015 by Dr Martin Luff 1. Introduction and Methods The majority of beetle recording in 2015 was concentrated on three sites and habitats: 1. Further sampling of moss on the Deer Park wall (SX794635), as mentioned in my 2014 report. This was done on two dates in March by MLL and again in October, aided by Messrs Tony Allen and Clive Turner, both experienced coleopterists. 2. Beetles associated with the decomposing body of a dead deer. The recently (accidentally) killed deer was acquired on 12th May by Mike Newby who pegged it out under wire netting in the small wood adjacent to 'Flushing Meadow', here referred to as 'Flushing Copse' (SX802625). The body was lifted regularly and beaten over a collecting tray, initially every week, then fortnightly and then monthly until early October. In addition, two pitfall traps were installed just beside the corpse, with a small amount of preservative in each. These were emptied each time the site was visited. 3. Water beetles sampled on 28th October, together with Tony Allen and Clive Turner, from the ponds and wheel-rut puddles on Berryman's Marsh (SX799615). Other work again included the contents of the nest boxes from Dartington Hills and Berrymans Marsh at the end of October, thanks to Mike Newby and his volunteer helpers. 2. Results In all, 203 beetle species were recorded in 2015, of which 85 (41.8%) were additions to the Dartington list. This increase over the 32% new in 2014 (Luff, 2015) results partly from sampling habitats (carrion, fresh-water) not previously examined. -

Having spent many happy hours with the lamented author in the examination of the beautiful forms of which this book treats, I have felt it a pleasant thing to be associated, even in so humble a capacity, with its introduction to the Entomological world ; and the little service I have had the privilege of rendering in the revision of the proof-sheets of the latter half of the work, has been quite a labour of love enabling me to offer a slight testimony of affection to a kind friend, and of my personal interest in that family of the Coleoptera which had first attracted my attention by the singular loveliness of its numerous species. A careful revision by the author himself would have been of incalculable value to the work ; its usefulness would also have been greatly enhanced, had it been possible for him to have made those modifications and additions which his investigations in America afforded materials for. But, of course, this was not possible. SCHUH Abstract The history of the “Koleopterologische Rundschau” (“Coleopterological Review”, CR), an exclu- sively coleopterological journal is reviewed. It was founded by a Viennese insect dealer towards the end of the “Golden Age of Viennese Coleopterology”. The first fascicle appeared in December 1911, but the first complete volume was actually published in 1912. The “Rundschau” managed to survive both World Wars. After a modest period of prosperity in the 1930s, it lead a rather shadowy existence until 1989. In 1990 the journal was restyled completely. Since then, its contents, layout and quality of printing have improved continuously. All owners, editors, publishers, and editors-in-chief of the CR are listed in chronological order. The relations between the CR, the Vienna Coleopterists Society (WCV) and the Austrian Zoological-Bota- nical Society (ÖZBG) are described. In a tabulated overview all volumes and fascicles printed since 1911, including information on their correct publication date are listed. Information on the numbers of pages, as well as the number of newly described genera and species, itemized according to biogeographic regions and families is also provided. Afsana Entomology Division, Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Gazipur, Bangladesh 1Department of Entomology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Bangladesh Abstract: Life cycle of Micraspis discolor (Fabricious), a predator of brown plant hopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens (Stal) was studied in the laboratory and its potentiality in biological control was investigated. A female M. discolor laid an average of 117.7 eggs in 25.1 days of oviposition period. Preoviposition period ranged from 5-10 days with an average of 6.6 days. The eggs hatched in 2-3 days with 83.7% hatching success. Predator had 4 larval instars requiring a total period of 12-15 days. Mean developmental period of the predator was 20.2 days. Male and female beetles lived for 27.4 and 32.4 days respectively. A predator larva consumed an average of 47.6 third instar brown plant hopper, while an adult beetle consumed an average of 112.6 BPH during 30 days after emergence. Predator, M. discolor both in larval and adult stage showed preference for second and third instar brown plant hopper. Rediscovery of the Rare Coccinellid Micraspis
Australian Entomologist, 2015, 42 (2): 73-76 73 REDISCOVERY OF THE RARE COCCINELLID MICRASPIS FLAVOVITTATA (CROTCH, 1874) IN WESTERN VICTORIA (COLEOPTERA: COCCINELLIDAE) REINER RICHTER PO Box 37, Monbulk, Vic 3793 Abstract Micraspis flavovittata (Crotch, 1874), a distinctive yellow and black Australian ladybird that has not been collected for more than 60 years, is reported in numbers from western Victoria. Notes are provided on pollen-feeding and other aspects of its biology. Introduction The distinctive, yellow and black coccinellid beetle Micraspis flavovittata (Crotch, 1874) was described 141 years ago from one specimen from ‘Melbourne’ in the Natural History Museum, London (BMNH). Since then only three specimens have been recorded, all collected by the early Victorian coleopterist F. E. Wilson. Two are from Narbethong in 1949 (in Museum of Victoria (MV)) and one from Kallista in 1944 (specimen missing); both localities are a little to the north-east of Melbourne city (Pope 1989, Atlas of Living Australia 2015, Ken Walker pers. comm.). It is not represented in the Australian National Insect Collection (ANIC) and is not illustrated in a recent monograph of the family (Slipinski 2007). The original type is not dated but was clearly collected before 1853, which is when its accession was registered by the Natural History Museum (Pope 1989). The author visited the Discovery Bay Coastal Park (Fig. 1) in western Victoria in 2008 and discovered a thriving colony of the endangered Ancient Greenling damselfly, Hemiphlebia mirabilis Selys, 1869, in Long Swamp (Richter 2009). Other Odonata rare in Victoria were also found at Discovery Bay (e.g. Austroagrion cyane (Selys, 1876) and Austrothemis nigrescens (Martin, 1901)), many being species previously known only much further east.
