NASDAQ and Governor Bush Launch Educational Programs With First Serve at NASDAQ-100 Open Initiative Introduces Stock Market Game and Entrepreneurship Education to First Serve Inner-City After-School Effort

Miami, FL– The NASDAQ Educational Foundation, Governor Jeb Bush and NASDAQ-100 Open Tournament Chairman Butch Buchholz today announced a pilot program that will introduce inner-city youth to stock market investing and entrepreneurship during the NASDAQ-100 Open, which takes place at the Center at Crandon Park from March 19 to 30. Working with two of its premier grant recipients—the Securities Industry Foundation for Economic Education (SIFEE) and the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE)—the NASDAQ Educational Foundation will bring "The Stock Market Game" and NFTE "BizTech" programs to First Serve. First Serve is a U.S. Tennis Association initiative designed to provide inner-city children with a safe and nurturing after-school environment that combines academics with tennis. The NASDAQ pilot program will be instituted with First Serve at the Ashe-Buchholz Tennis Center in Moore Park. "NASDAQ and the NASDAQ Educational Foundation strongly believe that the most important currency for our children is knowledge," said Edward Knight, Chief Public Policy Officer and General Counsel of The Nasdaq Stock Market, Inc. "Through First Serve in partnership with NFTE and SIFEE, we have created programs that combine athletics and education during the after school hours to help instill the fundamentals of business and investing in our nation's future leaders." "First Serve is a model program that not only teaches our youth how to play tennis, but also provides them with access to quality after-school programs," said Governor Jeb Bush. "The program is unique because, in addition to tennis lessons, it provides our youth an education in computers, academics and mentoring which are the basic components of the initiative. By teaming up with NASDAQ, the program will teach young minds the value of hard work, and the importance of saving and investing. These are valuable skills that will help our youth achieve success." "We are proud to bring NASDAQ and First Serve together for a special program that will benefit the kids first and foremost," said Butch Buchholz, Chairman of the NASDAQ-100 Open Tournament. " and I looked at the Ashe-Buchholz Tennis Center as a way to provide inner-city youth with a safe place to play tennis and learn. The NASDAQ Educational Foundation has enhanced that experience with this initiative." During the tournament, NFTE (pronounced "nifty") will offer First Serve participants a specialized curriculum through an interactive, computer-based learning tool called BizTech, which was originally co-developed by NFTE with Microsoft, a NASDAQ-100 company. BizTech teaches students how to create a business plan and start and operate a business. At the end of the tournament, the young future entrepreneurs will demonstrate what they have learned in a roundtable discussion with the CEOs of several NASDAQ-100 companies. Meanwhile, SIFEE (pronounced "si-fee") will conduct a session of "The Stock Market Game," which introduces student participants to stock market basics by allowing them to buy and sell stocks in hypothetical portfolios. During the two weeks of the NASDAQ-100 Open, students will compete based on the growth of their portfolios. Winners will receive prizes and be honored on court on Saturday, March 29th. Comcast, a NASDAQ-100 company, will provide high-speed Internet access for the computer room at the Ashe-Buchholz Center. In addition, representatives of the Court TV cable network will be on hand to introduce the network's science and social studies web-based curricula, Forensics in the Classroom and Choices and Consequences, which children can experience when visiting the Center.
