WHEREAS, the Tennessee General Assembly is very pleased to specially recognize our professional athletes whose talents hace enabled them to ascind to unparalleled gifted heights in their sport; and WHEREAS, Knoxville native, Chris Woodruff, is clearly one such talented professional; and WHEREAS, born on January 2, 1973, in Knoxville, Chris showed early signs of his future greatness as a gifted high school tennis player; and WHEREAS, highlights of his brilliant United States Junior Championship career included being the United States National Junior Champion, singles and doubles runner-up six times; the 1989 United States Tennis Association National Indoor Boys’ 18 Doubles Championship winner; the 1990 USTA National Clay Court Boys’ 18 Singles Championship winner; and the 1991 Easter Bowl Boys’ 18 singles winner; and WHEREAS, Chris then attended the University of Tennessee, where he was once again a leader and star for the Volunteers; and WHEREAS, during the 1991-1992 season, he was a National Collegiate Athletic Association singles All-American, was selected ITCA National and Region III Rookie of the SJR0769 01302426 -1- Year, received the Tennis Magazine Junior Sportsmanship Award, was ranked as the 12th best player in the nation by the ITCA/Volvo Collegiate Poll, and won the Milwaukee Tennis Classic singles title; and WHEREAS, his exceptional 1992-1993 record included -

The All-Rounder: a memoir of Fremantle sportsman Arthur Marshall by Roger Underwood The champion sportsman who excels in several sporting disciplines is a well-known phenomenon. Don Bradman, for example, was also the South Australian squash champion and a scratch golfer; Test fast bowler Ray Lindwall also played first grade rugby league in NSW and was a top sprinter. Western Australians who were multi-disciplinary champions include Keith Slater, who played Test cricket and football, cricket and baseball for WA, Derek Chadwick who played football and cricket with distinction for WA, and Rick Charlesworth, an Olympic hockey player and also a State cricketer. Fremantle all-rounders of note include John Baguley, who was an Olympic long and triple-jumper, played rugby for WA and league football for East Fremantle, and Merv Cowan who was captain of the Fremantle A Grade cricket team and the East Fremantle League football team, a State water polo player and State breaststroke swimming champion. The phenomenon is easily understood. Champion sportsmen share key physical and mental attributes: they are naturally athletic, they have exceptional hand-eye coordination and lightning reflexes, are highly competitive, and they have that special inner strength known as “the will to win”. This is best demonstrated in the champion who ‘wins ugly’ – sporting lingo for the ability to dig deep and find a way to win even when injured or having an off-day. The champion who performs at the elite level in several disciplines is rarer today than in earlier eras. Modern sporting champions tend to specialise. They choose to become a full-time AFL footballer, a Test cricketer, or a swimmer or golfer, and they do this while still a teenager. -

The game as played by such men as Norman E. Brookes, the late Anthony Wilding, William M. Johnston, and R. N. Williams is art. Every player who helps to attain a high degree of efficiency should have a clearly defined method of development and adhere to it. He should be certain that it is based on sound principles and, once assured of that, follow it, even though his progress seems slow and discouraging. I began tennis wrong. My strokes were wrong and my viewpoint clouded. I had no early training such as many of our American boys have at the pres- ent time. No one told me the importance of the fundamentals of the game, such as keeping the eye on the ball or correct body position and footwork. -

2012 News Page 1 of 18 The Website of Maria Bueno, Tennis Champion 2012 NEWS ROGER FEDERER VISITS SAO PAULO, 6-9 December 2012 The Gillette Federer Tour kicked off Roger’s first South American visit in Sao Paulo, Brazil, last week and he was keen to involve Maria in the proceedings. The two met at the Player Party, where Roger was joined by Maria Sharapova, Caroline Wozniacki, Victoria Azarenka, Serena Williams, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and the Bryan Brothers. Roger invited Maria to hit with him so he could see her legendary backhand for himself and arrangements were made for them to take to the court laid at the Ibirapuera indoor arena. Maria instructed him not to hit ‘anything spinny’, to which Roger replied that he would play her like he does with his parents and afterwards admitted she was way much better than them! Later he posted a picture of them on his Facebook page, saying: “About to play tennis Maria Esther Bueno… she has won 19 Grand Slam titles (7 singles, 11 doubles and 1 mixed)… she still plays amazing!” As for Maria, she was just astonished at how well he hit the ball. “He sliced one backhand that sped off the court like it had skidded off a line,” she said. “I said: Whoa! What was that? And he just laughed! “It was a fantastic experience and I think he enjoyed it too!” The two players swapped gifts – she gave him a framed photograph, which she signed ‘You are simply the best’ while he presented her with one of his rackets, personally signed on the handle. -

After that match, Ernie marches to the finals where once again he loses to William Renshaw, 5 sets again. Ernie may be the best of the rest, but Willie is still the best. 53 weeks at #1 due to there being 53 Monday's in 1883. 130 weeks at #1, 3 YE #1 1884- Lawford, who invented the topspin forehand by the way, beat the US champ Sears at the Irish and Ernie in the finals, both in straights. Lawford wins London Athletic Club as well, and looks poised to challenge Willie Renshaw for the Wimbledon title and #1 crown. Lawford had to play Wilberforce first round so this is 2 years in a row they give Lawford a top contender first round, do they have beef with him? Lawford wins in straights, Ernie loses SF, and Lawford plays Willie in the finals. But Renshaw holds firm and takes his title once more, in straights and with a bagel in the first, wow. -

After all, I was the guy who let his racket do the talking. I was the guy who kept his eyes on the prize, leading a very dedicated, disciplined, almost monkish existence in my quest to accumulate Grand Slam titles. And I was the guy who guarded his private life and successfully avoided controversy and drama, both in my career and personal life. But as I settled into life as a former player, I had a lot of time to reflect on where I’d been and what I’d done, and the way the story of my career might impact people. For starters, I realized that what I did in tennis probably would be a point of interest and curiosity to my family.
