    Choral Evensong The Presentation of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Temple February 2, 2020 • 4:00 pm Washington National Cathedral The Tradition of Choral Evensong Welcome to Washington National Cathedral. It is an ancient tradition for the people of God to offer praise and prayer as the day draws to a close. Choral Evensong is a service of sung evening prayer. The text of the service is drawn almost entirely from the Bible. The main purpose is to proclaim the wonderful works of God in human history, and in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Sung psalms and canticles are interwoven with readings from the Old and New Testaments and the recitation of the Apostles’ Creed and Lord’s Prayer. Other prayers and hymns are drawn from the many centuries of the Christian Church. The congregation is invited to listen reflectively and prayerfully as the choir offers prayer and praise on their behalf. Many find this frees them to offer to God their own thoughts and prayers.     Other Side of Sullivan Transcript Date: Wednesday, 11 June 2008 - 12:00AM THE OTHER SIDE OF SULLIVAN Professor Robin Wilson When you think of Sullivan, you probably think of something like this: Three little maids from school But there was another side to Sullivan, which is less familiar: Extract from Overture to Macbeth - part of the incidental music to Henry Irving's production ofM acbeth at the Lyceum Theatre in 1888. Today I want to explore this other side of Sir Arthur Sullivan, with examples of his art songs, his church and choral music, his grand opera, and his orchestral output. This lecture is part of the Gresham series of lectures marking the tercentenary of St Paul's Cathedral, a building with which Sullivan had associations throughout his life. Indeed, after his death in 1900, Queen Victoria insisted that he should receive a State funeral at St Paul's, and his grave can still be seen in the crypt. The pall-bearers at his funeral included Sir John Stainer, a life-long friend and composer of 'Stainer'sCrucifixion', and his close friends and contemporaries Sir George Martin, organist of St Paul's, and Sir Frederick Bridge, organist of Westminster Abbey and Gresham Professor of Music. The music played at the funeral included Brother, thou art gone before us, which Sullivan had composed twenty years earlier for his sacred musical drama The Martyr of Antioch. During this season of expectancy and anticipation, the Church focuses our attention on the Messianic prophecies of the Old Testament through which the ancient people of God were taught to hope for their Savior so that we can understand God’s new covenant, not as an abolishment of the ancient Law or the Prophets, but rather as a fulfillment of them. Benedicta tu in mulieribus, et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Jesus. Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus, nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. The “Ave Maria” or “Hail Mary” is a traditional devotional prayer that is often prayed by Christians within the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox traditions as well as many Anglo-Catholics among our Anglican tradition. The first half of this prayer text is derived from Luke 1:28, 30-31; the remainder is a prayer of intercession. This text may be used as an individual prayer, or incorporated into a larger prayer form such as the Rosary, which is a meditation on the mysteries of Christ’s life, and the Angelus, a devotional prayer that commemorates the Incarnation of Christ. “Ave Maria” has been set to music by a countless number of composers; we have musical settings in the styles of plainsong, choral polyphony, solo arias, and popular folk songs just to name a few. The setting sung by our Senior Choir today was composed by Franz Biebl (1906-2001), a twentieth century German composer.
