NARRATOR: Explains the context.

MUFASSA: “!”

SIMBA (slinks guiltily onto the stage)

MUFASSA: “Simba, I’m very disappointed in you.”

SIMBA: (dejectedly) “I know.”

MUFASSA: “You could have been killed! What’s worse is that you put Nahla in danger.”

SIMBA: (meekly) “I was just trying to be brave like you.”

MUFASSA: “Being brave doesn’t mean you go looking for trouble.”

SIMBA: “But you never get scared.”

MUFASSA: “I was today.”

SIMBA: “You were?”

MUFASSA: “Yes. I thought I might lose you.”

SIMBA: “Oh, so even kings get scared. . . But you know what?”

MUFASSA: (gently, with a smile) “What?”

SIMBA: “I bet those hyenas were even scareder!”

MUFASSA: (laughing, lovingly) “Ha ha! Because nobody messes with your dad!”

NARRATOR: Mufasa scoops up little Simba and the two begin to roll and tumble in play. Eventually they stop, but stay snuggling, and Simba says:

SIMBA: “Dad?”

MUFASSA: “Hmm?”

SIMBA: “We’re pals, right?”

MUFASSA: “Right.”

SIMBA: “And we’ll always be together, right?”

MUFASSA: (suddenly stern, looks up at the sky, pauses, then says) “Simba, let me tell you something my father told me. Look up at the stars. (pause) The great kings of the past look down on us from those stars.”

SIMBA: “Really?”

MUFASSA: “Yes. So whenever you feel alone, just look to the stars. The great kings will be there to guide you . . . and so will I.”

NARRATOR: “The scene closes with Simba and Mufassa both continuing to look up at the stars in silence. M&S LEAVE. A new scene begins, and very soon, Mufassa dies trying to protect Simba from a stampede. Simba wrongly believes it is his fault, and in his grief and shame he runs away. Next we see Simba as an adolescent. His voice has lowered and he now has a mane. He is hanging out with a couple of carefree adolescents and Simba too becomes something of a slacker: a lifestyle they call “”. One of Simba’s friends is a little African meerkat, named Timon. The other is a named Pumbaa. In one scene, it is evening and the 3 friends are lying out under the stars. Pumbaa the warthog asks Timon the meerkat a question:”

PUMBAA: “Timon . . .

TIMON: “Yeah . . .”

PUMBAA: “Ever wonder what those sparkling dots are up there?”

TIMON: “I don’t wonder; I know! They’re fireflies that got stuck up in that big blueish-black thing.”

PUMBAA: “Oh gee. I always thought they were balls of gas burning billions of miles away.

TIMON: “Pumbaa, with you everything’s gas.”

PUMBAA: Simba, what do you think?”

SIMBA: “Oh, I don’t know.”

PUMBAA: “Oh, come on! We told you. Now you tell us, pleeeeeeze?”

SIMBA: “Well . . . somebody once told me that the great kings of the past are up there watching over us.”

PUMBAA: “Really?”

TIMON: “You mean a bunch of royal dead guys are watching us?” “Ha, ha, ha, ha!”

SIMBA: “Yeh, pretty dumb, huh?” (now you look sad and slink away off the stage, head down, humiliated)

TIMON & PUMBAA: (watch Simba leave the stage), then Timon says to Pumbaa,

TIMON: “Was it something I said?”

PUMBAA: (shrugs shoulders)

TIMON & PUMBAA (both walk off the stage, silently, a bit sad)

[NOTE: You are the father of Simba. You are the King!]

You will be the first to speak, after the narrator introduces the scene. Wait for the narrator to beckon you onto the stage. ______

MUFASSA: “Simba!”
