ASSIGNMENT OF BACHELOR’S THESIS Title: Implementation of 2D turn-based strategy game with AI Student: Ivan Štěpánek Supervisor: Ing. Eliška Šestáková Study Programme: Informatics Study Branch: Web and Software Engineering Department: Department of Software Engineering Validity: Until the end of summer semester 2019/20 Instructions The goal of this bachelor thesis is to create a prototype of 2D turn-based strategy game that is inspired by the game Advance Wars. In single-player mode, the strategy of the computer will be an AI that was trained to play through self-play, using a minimum of human input. Requirements: - It should be implemented as a desktop application using the C++ language. - The play must support a mode for several players and playing against artificial intelligence (AI). - Provide at least 4 various pre-created game levels. Research part: - The AI component in the requirements above constitutes the research part. - Evaluate different algorithms for developing the AI strategy. - Design a strategy that relies mostly on self-play and uses a minimum of human input. - Implement the strategy within the game. - Evaluate the quality of the game played by the AI by evaluating its success rate against players of varying skills. EA REPORTS SECOND QUARTER FISCAL 2007 RESULTS Q2 Net Revenue a Record $784 Million Driven by EA SPORTS Titles Need for Speed Carbon Debuts on 10 Platforms REDWOOD CITY, CA – November 2, 2006 – Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS) today announced preliminary financial results for its fiscal second quarter ended September 30, 2006. Fiscal Second Quarter Results Net revenue for the second quarter was $784 million, up 16 percent as compared with $675 million for the prior year. Sales were driven primarily by Madden NFL 07, NCAA® Football 07, FIFA 07, NBA Live 07 and catalog titles. Gross profit for the quarter was $445 million, up 14 percent year-over-year. Net income for the quarter was $22 million as compared with $51 million for the prior year. The Company adopted Statement of Financial Accounting Standards (SFAS) No. 123R “Share-Based Payment” at the beginning of its fiscal year resulting in pre-tax stock-based compensation charges of $33 million in the second quarter. Diluted earnings per share were $0.07 as compared with $0.16 for the prior year. Non-GAAP net income was $65 million as compared with $46 million a year ago – an increase of 41 percent year-over-year. Non-GAAP diluted earnings per share were $0.21 as compared with $0.15 for the prior year. (Please see Non-GAAP Financial Measures and reconciliation information included in this release.) Trailing twelve month operating cash flow was $571 million as compared with $592 million a year ago. Loading… The Journal of the Canadian Game Studies Association Vol 6(9): 82-99 http://loading.gamestudies.ca The Dreamcast, Console of the Avant-Garde Nick Montfort Mia Consalvo Massachusetts Institute of Technology Concordia University [email protected] [email protected] Abstract We argue that the Dreamcast hosted a remarkable amount of videogame development that went beyond the odd and unusual and is interesting when considered as avant-garde. After characterizing the avant-garde, we investigate reasons that Sega's position within the industry and their policies may have facilitated development that expressed itself in this way and was received by gamers using terms that are associated with avant-garde work. We describe five Dreamcast games (Jet Grind Radio, Space Channel 5, Rez, Seaman, and SGGG) and explain how the advances made by these industrially productions are related to the 20th century avant- garde's lesser advances in the arts. We conclude by considering the contributions to gaming that were made on the Dreamcast and the areas of inquiry that remain to be explored by console videogame developers today. The Dreamcast, however brief its commercial life, was a platform that allowed for such work to happen and that accomplished this. It is not just that there were a large number of weird or unusual games developed during the short commercial life of this platform. We argue, rather, that avant-garde videogame development happened on the Dreamcast, even though this development occurred in industrial rather than "indie" or art contexts.
