  • Youthquake Evokes the 1932 Revolution and Shakes Thailand's
ISSUE: 2020 No. 127 ISSN 2335-6677 RESEARCHERS AT ISEAS – YUSOF ISHAK INSTITUTE ANALYSE CURRENT EVENTS Singapore | 6 November 2020 Youthquake Evokes the 1932 Revolution and Shakes Thailand’s Establishment Supalak Ganjanakhundee* EXECUTIVE SUMMARY • Grievance and frustration resulting from the government’s authoritarian style, its restrictions on freedom of expression and the dissolution of the Future Forward Party have been accumulating among students and youths in Thailand since the 2014 military coup. • While high school and college students are overwhelmingly represented among participants in the ongoing protests, young people from various other sectors across the country have also joined the demonstrations. • The flash-mob style of demonstration is a venting of anger against the political system, expressed in calls for the resignation of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha, a new Constitution and, more importantly, reform of the Thai monarchy. • The protests are a flashback to the 1932 Revolution, in that they are conveying the message that ordinary people, not the traditional establishment, own the country and have the legitimate right to determine its future course. • In response, the crown and the royalists are using traditional methods of smears and labels to counteract the youths. * Supalak Ganjanakhundee was Visiting Fellow in the Thailand Studies Programme, ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute from 1 October 2019 to 30 June 2020. He is the former editor of The Nation (Bangkok). 1 ISSUE: 2020 No. 127 ISSN 2335-6677 INTRODUCTION A number of Thais have gathered annually at Thammasat University’s Tha Phrachan campus and at the 14 October 1973 Memorial site on nearby Ratchadamnoen Avenue to commemorate the student uprising on that date which restored democracy to the country.

Whelan & Michael Lidauer Some background content sourced from ANFREL’s 2007 Thai Election Report written by Mr. Adam Cooper Edited by Ryan D. Whelan & Orawan Yafa Layout by Pongsak Chanon Design by Suthida Buasukkasem Photos without credits are courtesy of mission observers ISBN: 978-616-90144-2-3 Book cover design by Akanit Srisuttiwong Printed in Bangkok, Thailand FOREWORD ANFREL was established in 1997 as Asia’s first regional network of civil society organisations promoting democratization. It has a strong network of over 20 partner organisations within Asia from whom it draws experienced election observers to take part in its various missions. ANFREL has significant experience coordinating international election observation missions in Thailand, receiving international funding to observe the 2001, 2005, and 2007 general elections. Through our work and the work of Thai election observation organizations such as the Open Forum for Democracy Foundation (PollWatch) and the People’s Network for Elections in Thailand (P-NET), I believe that election observers made a significant contribution towards not just the fairness of this election, but towards strengthening Thailand’s democracy in the long-term. This report is the product of information and analysis from the ANFREL observers and Secretariat. It covers the pre and post election periods as well as Election Day itself.

  • Why Are the Border Patrol Police in Bangkok Now?
ISSUE: 2020 No. 133 ISSN 2335-6677 RESEARCHERS AT ISEAS – YUSOF ISHAK INSTITUTE ANALYSE CURRENT EVENTS Singapore | 23 November 2020 Why are the Border Patrol Police in Bangkok now? Sinae Hyun* EXECUTIVE SUMMARY • Thailand’s Border Patrol Police (BPP) have been deployed at key protest sites in Bangkok since September. • The BPP had been called in to operate in Bangkok on two previous occasions: on 6 October 1976, during demonstrations at Thammasat University, and in January-May 2010, during Red Shirt unrest. • The current mobilization of the BPP in Bangkok invokes traumatic memories of the 6 October 1976 massacre. • The BPP have been Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s right-hand force since the early 1980s, and their civic action work has been closely tied to her royal projects. In contrast, the current monarch has limited influence over this police organization. • Significantly, the ongoing pro-democracy protests led by the young activists are an endeavor to overcome Thailand’s traumatic past. *Sinae Hyun is Research Professor, Institute for East Asian Studies, Sogang University, Seoul. 1 ISSUE: 2020 No. 133 ISSN 2335-6677 INTRODUCTION On 21 June 2020, a noose was found in a garage used by Bubba Wallace, the only black driver in NASCAR’s top racing series. The discovery came days after the driver had posted a “Black Lives Matter” (BLM) message and congratulated NASCAR for its ban on displays of the Confederate battle flag. Both NASCAR and the FBI investigated the incident, and just two days later the FBI concluded that the incident was not a hate crime. It stated that “the garage door pull rope fashioned like a noose had been positioned there since as early as last fall.”1 The rope fashioned like a noose may not have been evidence of hate crime, and Bubba Wallace had to fight battle charges that he was overreacting to the discovery of the noose.

  • The Inscriptions on the First World War Volunteers Memorial, Bangkok
THE INSCRIPTIONS ON THE FIRST WORLD WAR VOLUNTEERS MEMORIAL, BANGKOK Brendan and Suthida Whyte Abstract The First World War Volunteers Memorial in Bangkok com- memorates the nineteen (non-combat) casualties of the 1,300-man Siamese Expeditionary Force sent to France by King Rama VI in 1918. The inscriptions on the monument are translated from the Thai, and the dates and locations of death of the nineteen casualties are mapped and analysed. Siam’s contribution as an Allied power during the First World War is rela- tively well known amongst Thais today, but is little more than a footnote in Western literature on the war. This is partly because Siam’s contribution, while very minor in terms of manpower sent to the front, and which included no combat casualties,1 was for Siam itself a crucial step towards acceptance as an equal by other nations (e.g. see Somphala 1971 & Wimonphan 2004, ch.36) and therefore has more signifi- cance for Thai history than Western military history. Thus while there are numerous Thai works dealing specifically with the country’s involvement,2 the literature in English, apart from short articles by Hart (1982) and Whyte (2007), consists of subsections of more general works covering modern Thai history,3 the reign of Rama VI,4 and Thailand’s military history and development,5 or concentrates on peripheral issues, such as the politics of Siam’s initial neutrality6 or the post-war mutual abolitions of nineteenth century unequal treaties.7 As a contribution towards a comprehensive English-language account of Siamese participation in the First World War, the inscriptions on the main memorial to the war are translated and analysed here for the first time.
