ISSUE: 2020 No. 127 ISSN 2335-6677 RESEARCHERS AT ISEAS – YUSOF ISHAK INSTITUTE ANALYSE CURRENT EVENTS Singapore | 6 November 2020 Youthquake Evokes the 1932 Revolution and Shakes Thailand’s Establishment Supalak Ganjanakhundee* EXECUTIVE SUMMARY • Grievance and frustration resulting from the government’s authoritarian style, its restrictions on freedom of expression and the dissolution of the Future Forward Party have been accumulating among students and youths in Thailand since the 2014 military coup. • While high school and college students are overwhelmingly represented among participants in the ongoing protests, young people from various other sectors across the country have also joined the demonstrations. • The flash-mob style of demonstration is a venting of anger against the political system, expressed in calls for the resignation of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha, a new Constitution and, more importantly, reform of the Thai monarchy. • The protests are a flashback to the 1932 Revolution, in that they are conveying the message that ordinary people, not the traditional establishment, own the country and have the legitimate right to determine its future course. • In response, the crown and the royalists are using traditional methods of smears and labels to counteract the youths. * Supalak Ganjanakhundee was Visiting Fellow in the Thailand Studies Programme, ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute from 1 October 2019 to 30 June 2020. He is the former editor of The Nation (Bangkok). 1 ISSUE: 2020 No. 127 ISSN 2335-6677 INTRODUCTION A number of Thais have gathered annually at Thammasat University’s Tha Phrachan campus and at the 14 October 1973 Memorial site on nearby Ratchadamnoen Avenue to commemorate the student uprising on that date which restored democracy to the country.

It has a strong network of over 20 partner organisations within Asia from whom it draws experienced election observers to take part in its various missions. ANFREL has significant experience coordinating international election observation missions in Thailand, receiving international funding to observe the 2001, 2005, and 2007 general elections. Through our work and the work of Thai election observation organizations such as the Open Forum for Democracy Foundation (PollWatch) and the People’s Network for Elections in Thailand (P-NET), I believe that election observers made a significant contribution towards not just the fairness of this election, but towards strengthening Thailand’s democracy in the long-term. This report is the product of information and analysis from the ANFREL observers and Secretariat. It covers the pre and post election periods as well as Election Day itself.

ISSUE: 2020 No. 133 ISSN 2335-6677 RESEARCHERS AT ISEAS – YUSOF ISHAK INSTITUTE ANALYSE CURRENT EVENTS Singapore | 23 November 2020 Why are the Border Patrol Police in Bangkok now? Sinae Hyun* EXECUTIVE SUMMARY • Thailand’s Border Patrol Police (BPP) have been deployed at key protest sites in Bangkok since September. • The BPP had been called in to operate in Bangkok on two previous occasions: on 6 October 1976, during demonstrations at Thammasat University, and in January-May 2010, during Red Shirt unrest. • The current mobilization of the BPP in Bangkok invokes traumatic memories of the 6 October 1976 massacre. • The BPP have been Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s right-hand force since the early 1980s, and their civic action work has been closely tied to her royal projects. In contrast, the current monarch has limited influence over this police organization. • Significantly, the ongoing pro-democracy protests led by the young activists are an endeavor to overcome Thailand’s traumatic past. *Sinae Hyun is Research Professor, Institute for East Asian Studies, Sogang University, Seoul. 1 ISSUE: 2020 No. 133 ISSN 2335-6677 INTRODUCTION On 21 June 2020, a noose was found in a garage used by Bubba Wallace, the only black driver in NASCAR’s top racing series. The discovery came days after the driver had posted a “Black Lives Matter” (BLM) message and congratulated NASCAR for its ban on displays of the Confederate battle flag. Both NASCAR and the FBI investigated the incident, and just two days later the FBI concluded that the incident was not a hate crime. It stated that “the garage door pull rope fashioned like a noose had been positioned there since as early as last fall.”1 The rope fashioned like a noose may not have been evidence of hate crime, and Bubba Wallace had to fight battle charges that he was overreacting to the discovery of the noose.
