SOME HISTORICAL REMARKS BASED ON THE NUMISMATIC EVIDENCE Nikolaus Schindel Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften, Wien* Abstract: This article discusses the Sasanian coinage from the region of Sakastan during the latter part of the 4th and the 5th century AD. Only through a comprehensive collection of material and a detailed re-evaluation of already examined coins was it possible to reconstruct a continuous se- ries of Sakastan coins stretching from Ardashir II (379–383) to Wahram V (420–438). The impli- cations of this numismatic evidence for our understanding of the history of Sakastan in this period are discussed in some detail, also taking into account further numismatic data from Eastern Iran. Key words: Sasanian history, Sasanian numismatics, Sakastan, Eastern Iran. Introduction Having already dealt with the Sasanian mints in Khurasan during the 5th century,1 a clos- er look at the neighbouring region of Sakastan not only completes the picture, but also – as I hope to be able to show – adds to the larger picture of Iranian and Eastern Iranian history in several respects. To separate the material presentation which, as it is, rests on a safe (even if small) material basis, represented by Sasanian coins, from the necessarily more hypothetical historical conclusions, I will fi rst present and discuss the numismatic material available to me, and then consider what we can learn from it for our knowledge of Eastern Iran in the 4th and 5th centuries AD. -

Bhagwan Mahaveer & Diwali All the Jains celebrate the festival of Diwali with joy. Diwali is celebrated on the new-moon day of Kartik. On the night of that day, Bhagwan Mahavira attained Nirvan or deliverance and a state of absolute bliss. The Lord discarded the body and the bondage of all Karmas on that night, at Pawapuri In Uttara-puraana written by Acharya GunBhadra (7th or 8th century) it is mentioned that in the month of Kartika, krashna paksha, svati nakshatra and on the night of the 14th (dawn of the amavasya), lord Mahavira became a Siddha (attained nirvana). Bhagwan Mahavira, the 24th Jain Tirthankaras, attained Nirvana on this day at Pavapuri on Chaturdashi of Kartika: - | || Diwali festival was first time mentioned in Harivansha Purana written by Acharya Jinasena, and composed in the Shaka Samvat era in the year 705. Acharya Jinasena mentions that Bhagavan Mahavira, attained nirvana at Pavapuri in the month of Kartika, Krashna paksh, during swati nakshatra, at the time of dawn. In Harivamsha-Purana sloka 19 and in sloka 20 he writes that the gods illuminated Pavanagari by lamps to mark the occasion. Shiva’s Waterfront Temples: Reimagining the Sacred Architecture of India’s Deccan Region Subhashini Kaligotla Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2015 © 2015 Subhashini Kaligotla All rights reserved ABSTRACT Shiva’s Waterfront Temples: Reimagining the Sacred Architecture of India’s Deccan Region Subhashini Kaligotla This dissertation examines Deccan India’s earliest surviving stone constructions, which were founded during the 6th through the 8th centuries and are known for their unparalleled formal eclecticism. Whereas past scholarship explains their heterogeneous formal character as an organic outcome of the Deccan’s “borderland” location between north India and south India, my study challenges the very conceptualization of the Deccan temple within a binary taxonomy that recognizes only northern and southern temple types. Rejecting the passivity implied by the borderland metaphor, I emphasize the role of human agents—particularly architects and makers—in establishing a dialectic between the north Indian and the south Indian architectural systems in the Deccan’s built worlds and built spaces. Secondly, by adopting the Deccan temple cluster as an analytical category in its own right, the present work contributes to the still developing field of landscape studies of the premodern Deccan. I read traditional art-historical evidence—the built environment, sculpture, and stone and copperplate inscriptions—alongside discursive treatments of landscape cultures and phenomenological and experiential perspectives. As a result, I am able to present hitherto unexamined aspects of the cluster’s spatial arrangement: the interrelationships between structures and the ways those relationships influence ritual and processional movements, as well as the symbolic, locative, and organizing role played by water bodies. -

1 Diwali-Essay-In-English-And-Hindi Since Deepavali is a festival for more than 2 days, we have 2 or 3 new dresses. It gives a message of love, brotherhood and friendship. India is a land of Festivals. Diwali is celebrated to mark the day when Lord Ram came to Ayodhya. On this day Kali Puja performed in Bengal. For most of us Diwali is just a synonym to a night full of crackers, noise and smoke. The last day of Diwali is called as Bhaubij. Some days before Diwali we burn statues of evil King Ravana. People greet their relatives and friends with sweets and crackers. Diwali is one of them. The night of amavasya is transformed into Purnima by glory of diyas. It is a Hindu Festival. I usually have to be a vegetarian, because I go to the Alter and offer different sweets and fruits. There is a lot of noise and air pollution. Siddharth Bidwalkar. Do we have to pay such a heavy cost to buy a smile for ourselves. Diwali is the festival of Goddess Laxmi. Lots of people also start new ventures on this day after performing Lakshmi Puja. This is because Lord Rama defeated him. We cook sweets like kanawla, gateau patate, tekwa, gulap jamoun and many other delicacies. -

We have also seen how Vedic knowledge transcends time and applies to reality itself, and how at each age it is again presented in the modalities and in the dimensions required to cater for the needs of the people of that age. Therefore when we speak of Vedic scriptures we refer not only to the original manuscripts that bear witness to the great antiquity of Hinduism in this age, but also to the previous versions of which we do not have copies, and also to the later texts compiled by self-realized souls that explain the original knowledge in harmony with the same eternal conclusions. For example in the case of the Puranas ("ancient stories") we see that the original version is presented and elaborated by a series of realized teachers. In the Bhagavata purana the two most prominent speakers are Sukadeva and Suta; Suta had received the knowledge of this Purana from Sukadeva when Sukadeva was speaking to King Parikshit and the Parama Karuna Devi other great sages assembled on the bank of the Ganges, and later he transmitted it to Saunaka and the other sages assembled at Naimisharanya. -
