Digimap Activity Sheet DIGIMAP ACTIVITY SHEET Where in Europe would you go to…? Pupils should already: • be able to locate Wales on an outline map of Europe Pupils will: • investigate the geographical location of various European features • annotate an outline map of Europe to display geographical information Resources required: • Digimap (Europe map – various layers) • Postcards of various European destinations Using a map of Europe to identify interesting destinations: • display the Europe map • ask pupils to consider destinations in Europe where they could participate in certain activities, e.g. sunbathe on a beach, explore an interesting city, go skiing, visit a historic landmark, climb a mountain, etc • use the Icons menu to add icons to the places suggested by the pupils • ask pupils to describe the location of the places chosen Using a map of Europe to find where postcards came from: • ask pupils to bring in postcards or photographs of famous European places, e.g. the Eiffel Tower, Mont Blanc and the Colosseum. • ask pupils to consider each postcard or photograph in turn, e.g. What does it show? Which country is it from? In which city is it found? • use the Icons menu to highlight the location of each feature on the map outline of Europe • use interactive whiteboard tools to draw straight lines radiating from Cardiff out to each icon • ask pupils to consider the direction and distance from Cardiff to each place shown on the map outline Using a map of Europe to explore holiday patterns: • ask pupils to list the European countries that they have visited on holiday • keep a tally to show how many pupils have visited each country • use the Icons menu to add icons to the correct places on the map • the number of icons added to each country should reflect the tally results • ask pupils to describe the distribution of icons on the map, e.g. Which were the most popular destination countries? Which were the least popular destination countries? Are there any patterns? • use the map layers to discuss the reasons why some European countries are more popular holiday destinations than others Checking progress: Ask your pupils to produce a brief written description of the holiday patterns map created in class. Extension activities: Prepare a series of ‘Stand up…’ clues based on the European countries. Give each pupil a card bearing the name of a European country. Explain that the cards show the name of a European country that they are going to visit. Examples of typical ‘Stand up…’ clues are likely to include: • Stand up… if you are going to an island country. • Stand up… if you are going to a country north of Denmark. • Stand up… if you are going to a country that is neighbours with Austria. • Stand up… if you are going to a country with a North Sea coastline. • Stand up… if you are going to a country that the Danube flows through. But Europe is also a common cultural heritage. And it is a culture in the making. The creation of the European Union would not have been possible without this common heritage and the endeavour to have a common future. Paradoxically, Europe’s specificity, its common heritage, is threatened by one of its major exponents, the ideology of modernity and modernisation. So a very important task Europe is confronted with is to be at the same time both modernising and preserving its specificity and variety. This task is the more arduous because we have, in order to fulfil it adequately, to shrug off outdated interpretations of modernity and modernisation, and to look at tensions and conflicts which are inherent to ongoing modernisation, like the increasing opposition between individual freedom and system-rationality. In front of ongoing modernisation and the supremacy of the ideology of modernisation or globalisation, it certainly will not be a revival of nationalism that will lead us to the Promised Land.

In the interwar period many ideas were floating around on how to shape European unity. These interwar Blueprints for Europe have to be understood in the context of conflicting and contradictory emotions of enmity and amity. This article looks at the emotive vocabulary of the canonical text of Coudenhove-Kalergi’s Pan-Europa. It applies an emotion discourse analysis, using Koselleck’s notion of “space of experience” and “horizon of expectation”. As such it shows the connection between the understanding and use of time and emotions in discourse—thereby demonstrating the necessity of “reading” the blueprints of European integration as highly normative and moral claims on the design of this European order.     Section 2 European economy in chaos intensified by debt crisis The European economy had been recovering modestly from a slump triggered by the global economic crisis in 2008, but business sentiment plunged reflecting the emergence of the European debt crisis and demand declined mainly due to tight fiscal policy of the governments of many countries to achieve fiscal soundness, resulting in an evident slowdown in the economy. In contrast, in Germany the economy has been relatively steady compared with other major countries; for example, there have been signs of recovery in some economic indicators. In this section, the current status of the European economy, which has recently been polarized as pointed out above, will be reviewed and its background will be examined. In addition, the intensification of chaotic trends in the European debt crisis and future challenges that the European economy is going to confront will be organized. 1. Overview (The European economy facing a business downturn) First, recent economic trends will be studied with a focus on major euro area economies hit by the European debt crisis. (1) GDP The seasonally adjusted real GDP growth rate in the 4th quarter of 2011 in the euro area recorded −0.3% quarter-on-quarter, falling to the first negative quarter-on-quarter growth in ten quarters since the 2nd quarter of 2009. By category of demand, each item of domestic demand, which are personal consumption (−0.4%), government consumption (−0.2%), and facility investment (−0.7%), decreased quarter-on-quarter, showing the seriousness of the decrease in domestic demand in the euro area (Figure 1-2-1-1).

    Introduction and overview JULIE SMITH Where does Europe begin and end? At one level, this question seems facile: most children could draw a geographical outline of Europe. Yet, there are many other ways—economic, political, cultural, and religious—of defining Europe. Such definitions frequently overlap and create tensions between states, including and among existing members of ‘European’ organizations. Europe’s external borders seem far from clear, while internal borders seem increasingly complicated. For forty years, the Cold War helped to determine which countries were allied and helped to frame institutionalized Europe of East and West. NATO, the Council of Europe, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and the European Communities were all products of the Cold War. The end of the Cold War was met with euphoria across Europe, but brought with it a series of unforeseen problems that have yet to be resolved. New states emerged after the collapse of communism: in 1993 Czechoslovakia split peacefully into two sovereign states, and in 1991 the Soviet Union split, rather less cleanly, creating instability and security threats, albeit of a different nature from those of the Cold War. Thus, a large number of economically and *politically weak states emerged, all seeking support, with many hoping for membership of Western institutions. The war in Chechyna is a continuing sign that the situation there is far from resolved. The breakup of Yugoslavia was bloodier and repeated Balkans wars have posed severe challenges for the region as well as for NATO and the EU. The Balkan wars have highlighted problems within the NATO alliance, most notably over Europe’s contribution of less than 20 per cent of the total air sorties in the bombardment of Serbia in the spring of 1999.
