BENELUX AND SWISS SYMPHONIES From the 19th Century to the Present A Discography of CDs And LPs Prepared by Michael Herman JEAN ABSIL (1893-1974) BELGIUM Born in Bonsecours, Hainaut. After organ studies in his home town, he attended classes at the Royal Music Conservatory of Brussels where his orchestration and composition teacher was Paul Gilson. He also took some private lessons from Florent Schmitt. In addition to composing, he had a distinguished academic career with posts at the Royal Music Conservatory of Brussels and at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel and as the long-time director of the Music Academy in Etterbeek that was renamed to honor him. He composed an enormous amount of music that encompasses all genres. His orchestral output is centered on his 5 Symphonies, the unrecorded ones are as follows: No. 1 in D minor, Op. 1 (1920), No. 3, Op. 57 (1943), No. 4, Op. 142 (1969) and No. 5, Op. 148 (1970). Among his other numerous orchestral works are 3 Piano Concertos, 2 Violin Concertos, Viola Concerto. "La mort de Tintagiles" and 7 Rhapsodies. After some early musical training, he studied in Paris under the tutelage of Marcel Dupré (organ), Paul Roës (piano) and Nadia Boulanger (counterpoint). He eventually gave up composing in order to earn a living as an organist. -

Was ist Anthroposophie für dich? In dieser Zeit voller Krisen wird zunehmend offenbar, wie aus der alten Welt eine neue gebären will. Eine Geburt, die nicht ohne We- hen, Schmerzen und Bangigkeit vor sich geht. Das Goetheanum ist Teil dieser Geburt – und will zugleich helfen. Nicht als Vorsänger eines neuen Weges, sondern als Garten, wo viele Wege aufkeimen können. Anthroposophie, als menschliches Gesicht der Weisheit, ist Mut- ter einer bisher ungekannten menschlichen Vielfalt. In diesem Sinne wird jeder einzelne Mensch in seiner Einzigartigkeit selbst zu einer originären Quelle der Anthroposophie. Die Freie Hochschule für Geisteswissenschaft pflegt insofern nicht nur eine Wissenschaft der Menschlichkeit, sondern auch eine menschli- che Wissenschaft. Sie verwirklicht sich nicht in erster Linie in spezifischen Techniken, sondern in einem neuen Verhältnis zur Welt. «Geistige Erkenntnis wandelt sich durch das, was sie ist, in Liebe um». (Rudolf Steiner) Liebe ist aber nie allgemein, nie kollektiv, nie generell. Liebe ist immer situativ, originär und individuell, auch und gerade wenn sie umfassend wird. Dieses Heft erzählt von viele Formen dieser Liebe. Tobiavanderpalsinterview
Fanfare Magazine ! -Jerry Dubins Exactly one year ago, in issue 35:6, I reviewed a disc of cello works by Leopold van der Pals (1884–1966), a composer so obscure that not a single one of his more than 250 works had ever been recorded. It was cellist Tobias van der Pal, great grandson of Leopold’s brother Nikolai, who finally dug into Leopold’s extensive catalog and with pianist Catherine Penderup recorded a handful of his pieces, among which was a major addition to the cello sonata repertoire. Now, for the same Polyhymnia label, but with a different pianist, Kristoffer Hyldig, and the addition of violinist, Elisabeth Zeuthen Schneider, Tobias has recorded four more of Leopold’s works, a piano sonata, a duo sonata for violin and cello, a piano trio, and three fugues. It was my pleasure! to chat with all three players in a recent interview. Jerry: This first question is directed to Tobias. The place to start, it seems to me, is to ask what led you to this discovery of Leopold’s music. How did you come to be aware of its existence? Where did you find it? And in what state of performance viability was it? Tobias: I remember hearing about the conductor Nikolai van der Pals and composer Leopold van der Pals from my grandfather as a child, but it was not until I started my cello studies at the Royal Academy of Music in Copenhagen in 1999 that my eyes were really opened to who they really were. One day my teacher came to me and said that he had read about my family in Riemand’s Music Lexicon in the school library. -

A special event was the Eurythmy Teachers Conference at Easter with many impressive per- formances by pupils. The participants returned to their work encouraged and refreshed. Sev- eral connections are beginning to be formed in the work between the Sections and the first conferences of a working together have taken place. For those involved in other areas, eury- thmy was a new experience and a help. The Eurythmy Summer Festival has just taken place. It brought to us the extensive palette of eurythmic activities of the present day and some painful surprises. To the request to think about a solution to the increasing costs of the Newsletter, we received a host of reactions. Almost everyone would like to keep it bi-annual, requesting shorter reports and succinct announcements. It is suggested that a price for regular subscription be made, and where necessary to grant a concession. Our next step: Announcements at most one column (half a side of A4); reports no longer than a side (A4, font: Times New Roman 12). Once again a request for those who do not pay, never- theless where possible to made a bank transfer using the enclosed form. In this issue we have had to shorten here and there. Those people whose contribution had to be postponed have often not been very pleased.
