A former U-boat officer who served on U-288, Herr Bredow was spared the fate of his crew-mates when he was sent to hospital for treatment of wounds and missed the last sailing of his boat, which was lost with all hands during an attack on Convoy JW58 on 3 April 1944. Herr Bredow has dedicated his life to researching the fates of all of Germany's U-boats and in the process has assembled the world's finest archival collection of photographs, documents and historical artefacts relating to the U-boats, not only of the Kriegsmarine, but also of their predecessors of the Imperial Navy of the Kaiser's day. Maintaining and expanding this wonderful collection is a major undertaking. Please include an SAE if in the UK, or if outside the UK, two International Reply Coupons. 7 INTRODUCTION Few forms of combat in modern history have grabbed the imagination of the public to the degree that has been the case with submarine warfare. There is, to many, something innately sinister about any weapon which can operate unseen and whose arrival is first heralded by a huge explosion and eruption of flame as the victim it has been stalking is sent plunging into the depths. The German submariner has, in popular Western culture, usually been portrayed as some sort of Nazi fanatic, revelling not only in the destruction of enemy ships, but also in the death of their crews. The reality of course was somewhat different. The German Navy was fiercely traditional and made every effort to ensure that it remained as free as possible from political interference. For a long time, membership of any political party was frowned upon, even after the Nazis came to power. The Commander-in-Chief U-Boats, Karl Dönitz, who of course ultimately became the commander-in-chief of the entire navy, made strenuous efforts to ensure that so-called 'National Socialist Leadership Officers', somewhat analogous to the political commissars employed by the Soviets, were kept well away from the U-boats. Many of those military formations throughout history that have become perceived as 'elite' have held a fascination for those with an interest in military matters. The German Armed Forces of World War II have many such formations, the fighter arm of the Luftwaffe, the Fallschirmjäger, the Afrikakorps, the Panzerwaffe and the Waffen-SS to name but a few. Of all the branches of the Wehrmacht, however, few were so successful, and came so near to bringing the enemy to its knees, as the 'Grey Wolves' of the U-Bootwaffe under Karl Dönitz. From the very first day of war to the very last, the U-boats and their crews performed with great distinction. Despite beginning the war with only a fraction of the number of boats intended, Dönitz and his submarines achieved phenomenal results. The German U-boat designs were immensely successful. They were relatively small in comparison with some of the Allied models. Despite the intensely uncomfortable conditions and privations suffered by the crews, the Type VII which formed the backbone of the U-boat fleet was responsible for sinking more 8 INTRODUCTION ships than all of the Allied types put together. The Germans were world leaders not only in constructing these boats, but also in building the special protective bunkers to house them in occupied ports. The great bunkers erected in occupied France in particular were to prove virtually impregnable to attack. Even the massive bunker-busting 'Tallboy' bombs developed specially for use against such targets could inflict only superficial damage on these massive structures. So strong were they that the cost of demolishing them after the war was seen as prohibitive and many of them stand to this day, testament to the abilities of their German constructors. In many ways, the U-Bootwaffe was unique amongst German military formations. Its level of success was achieved despite fighting its war in a manner which was acknowledged even by its enemies as far 'cleaner' than the manner in which they themselves had fought. Apart from the solitary incident involving the killing of the survivors of the Peleus by Kapitänleutnant Eck, the U-boats were distinctive not so much in the number of atrocities committed but rather for the number of occasions on which U-boat commanders went out of their way to try to aid the survival of the crews of ships they had sunk. A significant number of successful U-boat commanders went on to join the post-war West German Navy and served again with great distinction, reaching high rank in NATO working alongside their former foes. 9 WOLF PACK A rare shot of the 2cm gun fitted to the pedestal, here on U-24.

IIB 20 T The first sub-variant - the IIA - was modelled after the IIC 8 design export CV-707, which served in the Finnish Navy IID 16 under the name Vesikko. The next variant was the Type IIB, which was longer and heavier than the IIA. Two further variants - the IIC and IID - followed. In total 50 Type IIs served in the German Kriegsmarine prior to and during World War II. Space was very cramped inside these diminutive boats. Due to their small size and tendency to roll, the Type IIs were known as Einbaum - “dug-out canoes” - by their crews. Indeed they only carried six torpedoes, which could only be fired from the bow through three forward torpedo tubes. Range was also limited, meaning that they operated mainly in the North Sea from ports in Germany. Nevertheless a number of Type IIs, with a crew of between 22 and 24, performed well during war patrols. Several very successful commanders - Otto Kretschmer in U 23, Erich Topp in U 57 and Adalbert Schnee in U 6 and U 60 - learned their trade on Type IIs before moving to the larger ocean-going Type VII boats. The Type IIAs, IIBs and IICs were all used during the invasion of Norway, after which the IIAs and IIBs were relegated to training flotillas.

The South African home front during the war, and in particular the Axis and Allied maritime war waged off the southern African coast, has, however, received scant historical attention from professional and amateur historians alike. The historical interrelated aspects of maritime insecurity evident in southern Africa during the war are largely cast aside by contemporary academics engaging with issues of maritime strategy and insecurity in southern Africa.

Die Bezeichnung "uneingeschränkter U-Boot-Krieg" wird verwendet, wenn Schiffe ohne vorherige Warnung angegriffen werden. Der Einsatz von U-Booten wandelte sich im Laufe der Zeit vom taktischen Blockadebrecher zum strategischen Blockademittel im Rahmen eines Handelskrieges. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg änderte sich die grundsätzliche Einsatzdoktrin durch die Entwicklung von Raketen tragenden Atom- U-Booten, die als Träger von Kernwaffen eine permanente Bedrohung über den maritimen Bereich hinaus darstellen. Im Gegensatz zum Ersten und Zweiten Weltkrieg fand hier keine völkerrechtliche Weiterentwicklung zum Einsatz von U-Booten statt. Der Begriff wird besonders auf den Ersten und Zweiten Weltkrieg bezogen. Hierbei sind auch völkerrechtliche Rahmenbedingungen von Bedeutung. Anfänge Während des Amerikanischen Bürgerkrieges wurden 1864 mehrere handgetriebene U-Boote gebaut. Am 17. Februar 1864 versenkte die C.S.S. H. L. Hunley durch eine Sprengladung das Kriegsschiff USS Housatonic der Nordstaaten. Es gab 5 Tote auf dem versenkten Schiff. Die Hunley gilt somit als erstes U-Boot der Welt, das ein anderes Schiff zerstört hat. Das U-Boot wurde allerdings bei dem Angriff auf die Housatonic durch die Detonation schwer beschädigt und sank, wobei auch seine achtköpfige Besatzung getötet wurde. Auftrag der Hunley war die Brechung der Blockade des Südstaatenhafens Charleston durch die Nordstaaten. Erster Weltkrieg Die technische Entwicklung der U-Boote bis zum Beginn des Ersten Weltkrieges beschreibt ein Boot, das durch Dampf-, Benzin-, Diesel- oder Petroleummaschinen über Wasser und durch batteriegetriebene Elektromotoren unter Wasser angetrieben wurde.

    William Edward RANGECROFT Chief Stoker HMS Pathfinder At KES: Born in Camberwell, he was fatherless and came to KES in 1885. His occupation was the band but he was described as “troublesome”. Not suitable for the army when he left in 1888 he joined the Royal Navy as a stoker. Date of Death: 5th September 1914 Place: Drowned North Sea Remembered on Chatham Naval Memorial At the time of his death he had been promoted to Chief Stoker and received a Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. At the beginning of September 1914 Otto Hersing of U-21 ventured to the Firth of Forth, home to the major British naval base at Rosyth. Hersing is known to have penetrated as far as the Carlingnose Battery beneath the Forth Bridge. At one point the periscope was spotted and the battery opened fire but without success. Overnight Hersing withdrew from the Forth, patrolling the coast from the Isle of May southwards. From distance, on the morning of 5 September he observed the SSE course of HMS Pathfinder followed by elements of the 8th Destroyer Flotilla. The destroyers altered course back towards the Isle of May at midday while HMS Pathfinder continued her patrol. Hersing spotted Pathfinder on her return journey from periscope depth at 1530. This time he resolved to make an attack. At 15.43 Otto Hersing fired a single 50 cm (20 in) Type G torpedo. 5 September was a sunny afternoon. At 15.45 lookouts spotted a torpedo wake heading towards the starboard bow at a range of 2,000 yards.
