1. DEMOGRAPHIC DEVELOPMENT

1.1 Population Growth

The total population in Malta at the end of 2005 was estimated at 404,346 persons of which 50.4 per cent were women. The Maltese population in 2005 was estimated at 391,295 persons, implying that 3.2 per cent of the total population were foreign citizens. The resulting population density is 1,282 persons per square kilometre, which is the highest recorded value in Europe.

In 2005, the total population increased by 1,678 persons over 2004, which may be attributed to natural population increase as well as to net migration.

The natural increase is the difference between births and deaths. This figure amounted to 783 persons for the year under review. Net migration is the difference between and emigration. The basic variables used in the calculation of net migration in Malta are (1) the number of returned migrants and foreign settlers which amounted to 187, (2) the number of new work permit holders which also amounted to 187 and (3) the number of adoptions, registrations and naturalisations, which amounted to 624. Unfortunately, no concrete figures were available to quantify total emigration from Malta. This variable was therefore estimated, using past data, to at 70 individuals.

Chart 2 illustrates actual and projected changes in the population distribution over a span of 65 years.

These predicted changes in the population distribution may be attributed mainly to a declining birth rate, together with an increasing expectation of life for both men and women. As an example, the expectation of life at age 0 for men has increased from 70.8 in 1985 to 74.9 in 1995 and then to 77.7 for the year under review. On the other hand, the expectation of life for women has increased from 76.0 in 1985 to 79.5 in 1995 and to 81.4 in 2005.

vi 1.2 Vital Statistics

1.2.1 Fertility

During 2005, 3,804 maternities were registered in Malta and . The majority of these were single maternities; however there was a proportion of 1.4 per cent of multiple maternities, of which 3 cases involved the live births of triplets. No quadruplets were born during the year under review. More than 50 per cent of maternities involved mothers who were pregnant for the first time. On the other hand, the number of mothers giving birth for the third or fourth time amounted to only 15.8 per cent of all maternities.

The total number of registered live births for the year under review was 3,858. 51.4 per cent of newborns were boys. The predominance of male live births over female ones is however not manifested in the total population, mainly owing to the predominance of the male sex in older age groups.

The Crude Birth Rate, which is the total number of live births per 1000 mid-year population, was calculated to be 9.56. The highest Crude Birth Rate was recorded in the Northern district and stood at 12.28. The lowest values were recorded in the Northern Harbour and Southern Harbour districts, at 8.41 and 8.59 respectively.

The total number of registered births in Malta has been on a constant decline over the past 10 years. As an example, during the year under review, there was a drop of 29 births when compared to 2004. Over the past decade, live births dropped by 1,180.

The Total Fertility Rate for the year under review was calculated at 1.37. This value is considerably lower than the minimum replacement rate required for the most developed countries, which is 2.1. No Member State has however been able to reach this threshold, as shown in Chart 4. Having said this, Malta is among the twelve Member States with the lowest replacement levels.

vii During the year under review, births outside marriage amounted to 20.1 per cent of all registered live births. Mothers who gave birth outside wedlock and who were below age 20 comprised 26.9 per cent of all mothers, while a further 35.8 per cent were aged between 20 and 24.

1.2.2 Mortality

The continual increase in the population throughout the past half century occurred mainly because of a decrease in mortality at almost all ages, especially within the elderly age bracket, which has set the total populationon a course of constant ageing.

The total number of registered deaths during 2005 amounted to 3,130, with a Crude Death Rate of 7.76. Of these, 50.4 per cent were men. During this year, 23 deaths involved children who were less than 1 year old. However, it should be noted that infant deaths have decreased by 57 per cent since 1996.

The highest Crude Death Rate was recorded in Gozo and Comino, while the lowest death rates were registered in the South Eastern district with 6.61 and the Northern district with 6.77. It is interesting to note that the latter two districts registered also the highest birth rates during the year under review.

58.5 per cent of all deaths in the year under review involved persons aged 75 years and over. In 1996, this figure had stood at 53.3 per cent. This may be justified by the fact that people are living longer and why revisions in expectations of life demonstrate significant lifetime increases from year to year.

Most deaths occurred during the first three months of the year; this pattern has been observed every year since 1995. The highest incidence was recorded during February, with 366 deaths. Other high values were recorded during January - 319 deaths, and March - 351 deaths. The lowest occured in September, with 208 deaths.

Diseases of the circulatory system comprised the recorded cause of death of the longest proportion of deaths - 44.3 per cent. A further 718 deaths were caused by cancerous diseases. These two have been the most common cause of death since 1999.

1.2.3 Marriages

During 2005, 2,374 marriages were registered in Malta and Gozo - a decrease of 1.2 per cent over the previous year. The crude marriage rate was calculated at 5.88 per 1000 mid-year population. The average number of marriages in Malta has remained practically unchanged over the past 10 years. In fact, the number of marriages has only dropped by 17 when compared to the figure in 1996. It may however be noted that there was a significant drop in marriages where both the bride and the groom were Maltese citizens. This has been compensated for by an increase in the number of foreign couples who married in Malta and foreigners who married Maltese citizens.

June has been the most popular month for marriages over the past ten years. In fact, 14.6 per cent of marriages in 2005 were held during this month.

The majority of these marriages were entered into by side partners - 86.6 per cent of all marriages. 4.3 per cent and 3.8 per cent of marriages respectively involved grooms and brides who had been parties to marital unions which had since been anulled.

In most marriages the groom was older than the bride. As an example, while 32.3 per cent of brides were under 25, only 13.1 per cent of grooms were within this age group. On the other hand, while 20.1 per cent of the grooms were 35 years or over, only 12.3 per cent of brides fell within this age group.

It may also be noted that the average age of spouses has increased considerably over the past 10 years. In fact, the average age of brides has increased from 25.1 years in 1995 to 27.9 years in the year under review. The average age for grooms has also increased - from 27.6 years in 1995 to 30.4 years in 2005. The shift in age distributions can be seen more clearly in Charts 9 and 10.

1.2.4 Adoptions

During the past five years, an average 51 adoptions were registered every year. The total number of adoptions for the year under review amounted to 62, with a decrease of 8 adoptions over the previous year. The maximum number of adoptions for the year under review involved children from Ethiopia, while 23 cases involved Maltese children.
