Vaasa, (25–34). Nostalgia in the Media Representations of Female Folk Singers Noora Karjalainen English Studies University of Vaasa Tämä artikkeli tarkastelee naisfolklaulajien nostalgisia mediarepresentaatioita. Artikkelissa kiinnitetään erityistä huomiota siihen, kuinka laulajien esityskieli vaikuttaa heidän representaatioidensa muodostumi- seen. Artikkelin teoreettisena pohjana on käytetty Astrid Erllin kulttuurisen muistin tutkimusta ja mää- ritelmiä ja Svetlana Boymin nostalgia-analyysiä. Analysoimalla laulajien kuvauksia eri tekstilähteissä artikkelissa pyritään selvittämään mitä yhteyksiä folklaulajien representaatioilla on nostalgiaan ja kult- tuurisen muistin eri tasoihin. Keywords: cultural memory, folk music, folk singers, media representations, nostalgia 1 Introduction Nostalgia has a central part in the construction of a folk singer representation, as well as with the imagery connected to folk singers. The artist types for different genres of music are constructed through and preserved on the collective level of cultural memory; in folk music these types are particularly persistent, even though the artists may not ac- tively perform the stereotypical folk singer image. Thus, because of collective memory, if an artist is referred to as a folk singer it might bring to mind a long haired young woman, often alone on the stage playing the guitar and singing sad songs about lost love and heartbreak. This representation, constructed mostly during the 1960s folk revival by and for Joan Baez, Judy Collins and others, is still the prevalent public representation reserved for female folk singers. This article discusses nostalgic representations of female folk singers in different media sources such as digital publications of magazine articles, interviews, and concert and album reviews.

  • Raw Thought: the Weblog of Aaron Swartz Aaronsw.Com/Weblog
Raw Thought: The Weblog of Aaron Swartz aaronsw.com/weblog 1 What’s Going On Here? May 15, 2005 Original link I’m adding this post not through blogging software, like I normally do, but by hand, right into the webpage. It feels odd. I’m doing this because a week or so ago my web server started making funny error messages and not working so well. The web server is in Chicago and I am in California so it took a day or two to get someone to check on it. The conclusion was the hard drive had been fried. When the weekend ended, we sent the disk to a disk repair place. They took a look at it and a couple days later said that they couldn’t do anything. The heads that normally read and write data on a hard drive by floating over the magnetized platter had crashed right into it. While the computer was giving us error messages it was also scratching away a hole in the platter. It got so thin that you could see through it. This was just in one spot on the disk, though, so we tried calling the famed Drive Savers to see if they could recover the rest. They seemed to think they wouldn’t have any better luck. (Please, plase, please, tell me if you know someplace to try.) I hadn’t backed the disk up for at least a year (in fairness, I was literally going to back it up when I found it giving off error messages) and the thought of the loss of all that data was crushing.

It was one of the few new records that I wanted to check out that wasn’t available streamed, so like the latest Bob Dylan album earlier in the year I was forced to get a hard copy, and because I am more than averagely skint since the disaster with my buggered hard drive earlier this year, I was forced to do what I did as a teenager, and wait until my birthday came around in order to listen to it. Then, the universe being run according to Sod’s Law, on my birthday we had a house guest with a sleeping disorder, so I wasn’t able to listen to it at the volume which I thought that it deserved, so I had to wait until Tuesday. Then, on Tuesday I found there was a problem with the hifi and that it would only play through one channel. The next day, Graham had a quick look at the Dear Friends, aforementioned hifi and found that a wire had come loose, probably because of the predations Welcome to another issue of yer favourite of Squeaky Biscuit the kitten, who is living proof magazine, that is pretty well quite literally put that one should never name kittens after one of together on a wing and a prayer every Thursday the Manson Family, and within a few minutes of and Friday night by a team who don’t really have him fiddling around, the hifi was working fine.

Female Folk Singers in the Media Jyväskylä: University of Jyväskylä, 2020, 100 p. (JYU Dissertations ISSN 2489-9003; 176) ISBN 978-951-39-8003-0 (PDF) The aim of this dissertation is to show how the media representation of female folk singers is constructed. To find out what kinds of narratives emerge from it, it is important to understand that this media representation is based on processes of remembering and premediation. Methods of close reading and analysis were applied in examining concert and album reviews, interviews and articles written about four contemporary female folk singers: Julie Fowlis, Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, Emily Portman and Kate Rusby. The findings show how deeply embedded in cultural memory the presentation of a female folk singer is and how extensively it is used in constructing media representation of these singers.

  • KATE RUSBY: a Biography
KATE RUSBY: a Biography Of all the stars in Folk Music’s wondrous firmament few shine as brightly as Yorkshire’s Kate Rusby. A remarkable, interpretive singer, Kate’s soulful vocals resonate with the wistful beauty of an earthbound angel. Inhabiting a lyric with unforced conviction – no matter how old or how modern – she has that rare ability to transport her audience, of touching them emotionally and making each tune live vividly within their experience and imagination. It’s a precious gift attained not by resource to decibel blasting or histrionics but through simplicity, understatement and faith in the narrative drive of the songs she chooses to sing. Early Career No wonder then that even as early as 1999, aged just 26, Kate was named as one of the Top Ten Folk Voices of the Century. Everything she has done since, has confirmed the foresight of those who bestowed that honour. From being a nominee for 1999’s Mercury prize – almost unheard of for a folk singer both then and now – for her stunningly assured second solo album, Sleepless, to 2016’s enthralling Life In A Paper Boat, Kate has stayed true to her folk and acoustic roots. This, despite the temptations such early recognition placed in her path: “Around the time of Sleepless various people waved contracts at me, all saying, ‘Come with us, we’ll make you a star’. They wanted me to cut a ‘pop’ record, but I’d just reply, ‘you must be joking - why would I do another kind of music just as I am starting to succeed with I want to do?’ I’m from a strong, close family in a small village just outside Barnsley – that whole celebrity, music chart, be as famous as you can hullabaloo is so far from the things I care about in life.
