Vaasa, (25–34). Nostalgia in the Media Representations of Female Folk Singers Noora Karjalainen English Studies University of Vaasa Tämä artikkeli tarkastelee naisfolklaulajien nostalgisia mediarepresentaatioita. Artikkelissa kiinnitetään erityistä huomiota siihen, kuinka laulajien esityskieli vaikuttaa heidän representaatioidensa muodostumi- seen. Artikkelin teoreettisena pohjana on käytetty Astrid Erllin kulttuurisen muistin tutkimusta ja mää- ritelmiä ja Svetlana Boymin nostalgia-analyysiä. Analysoimalla laulajien kuvauksia eri tekstilähteissä artikkelissa pyritään selvittämään mitä yhteyksiä folklaulajien representaatioilla on nostalgiaan ja kult- tuurisen muistin eri tasoihin. Keywords: cultural memory, folk music, folk singers, media representations, nostalgia 1 Introduction Nostalgia has a central part in the construction of a folk singer representation, as well as with the imagery connected to folk singers. The artist types for different genres of music are constructed through and preserved on the collective level of cultural memory; in folk music these types are particularly persistent, even though the artists may not ac- tively perform the stereotypical folk singer image. Thus, because of collective memory, if an artist is referred to as a folk singer it might bring to mind a long haired young woman, often alone on the stage playing the guitar and singing sad songs about lost love and heartbreak. This representation, constructed mostly during the 1960s folk revival by and for Joan Baez, Judy Collins and others, is still the prevalent public representation reserved for female folk singers. This article discusses nostalgic representations of female folk singers in different media sources such as digital publications of magazine articles, interviews, and concert and album reviews.

Raw Thought: The Weblog of Aaron Swartz aaronsw.com/weblog 1 What’s Going On Here? May 15, 2005 Original link I’m adding this post not through blogging software, like I normally do, but by hand, right into the webpage. It feels odd. I’m doing this because a week or so ago my web server started making funny error messages and not working so well. The web server is in Chicago and I am in California so it took a day or two to get someone to check on it. The conclusion was the hard drive had been fried. When the weekend ended, we sent the disk to a disk repair place. They took a look at it and a couple days later said that they couldn’t do anything. The heads that normally read and write data on a hard drive by floating over the magnetized platter had crashed right into it. While the computer was giving us error messages it was also scratching away a hole in the platter. It got so thin that you could see through it. This was just in one spot on the disk, though, so we tried calling the famed Drive Savers to see if they could recover the rest. They seemed to think they wouldn’t have any better luck. (Please, plase, please, tell me if you know someplace to try.) I hadn’t backed the disk up for at least a year (in fairness, I was literally going to back it up when I found it giving off error messages) and the thought of the loss of all that data was crushing.

  • Women in British Folk Music 1880‐2011
Student number: 7261488 MUSC 30400 In Search of a Voice: Women in British Folk Music 1880‐2011 Dissertation submitted in part fulfilment of the degree of Bachelor of Music. © Kerry Firth 2012 Abstract Of all the existing research that documents the twists and turns, ups and downs, and ducks and dives of British folk music’s history, there appears to be no cohesive exploration of the key involvements of women’s voices. Publications are instead devoted to the stories of successful male figures such as Cecil Sharp, A.L. (Bert) Lloyd, or Ewan MacColl who, although admittedly having a great influence on the genre’s development, were by no means the only protagonists in its history. This dissertation attempts to close a void in research by providing a sounding‐board for the achievements of women within the genre. Although largely unnoticed, these achievements have been pivotal moments in the genre’s history, and have contributed heavily to its development. The consultation of the small amount of literature that exists on Lucy Broadwood and Kate Lee of the first folk revival will kick‐start this study, since along with providing a needed introduction to their successes, its lack of content will also highlight a number of problems that will reverberate throughout the duration of this work and that threatened to bring the journey of finding the woman’s voice to a halt. The nature of the portrayal of women in traditional song will also be analysed, which adds further obstacles to the course. A reliable body of interviews with British female folk artists whose careers range from the 1970s to today will inform the second part of this dissertation, which deals exclusively with the second revival, showing how women wrestled with the misogyny left behind by the first.

  • And a Letter to My Customers ===
--- == ROOTS & RHYTHM - SALE 01/12/2014 - AND A LETTER TO MY CUSTOMERS === --- Dear Friends Happy New Year! We hope you all had a wonderful holiday season. NOTE: Regrettably our holiday season was the slowest we've ever seen and it may mean that we will not be able to continue operating our business for very much longer. I am no longer a young man (not by a long shot!) and don't have the energy to pursue ways in which we may be able to promote the business. I would love to be able to settle down and listen to all the music I have gathered over the years in a relaxed setting and with critical reviewing faculties turned off. I would love to see Roots & Rhythm continue and thrive and even if we make it through the current crisis I would still like to get away from the stress of running a business so I am open to having someone else take over and move the company forward. If you are such a person or know such a person please contact me and we can discuss it. This list consists of a sale which we hope will raise enough money to help us get caught up with our suppliers and our taxes as well as some other pressing expenses. This list features 600 titles in all covering all the genres of music we specialize in and featuring books, DVDs and compact discs. This list includes manufacturer?s overstocks and deletions, our own excess inventory and a lot of titles that have been sitting on our shelves that have never been listed before.
