PORSCHEWILLOUGHBY.COM.AU - 11 RESTORATION

1985 Before PORSCHE I was looking for a Porsche I could enjoy on weekends and compete in some track days, to keep my mid-life crisis under control. I looked for about 6 months, spending many 911 TARGA late nights of extensive research and having discussions We look in on Rob Scheeren - Automotive Photographer and his 911 Targa restoration. What started with a small about it with whomever I could talk to. I narrowed my engine oil leak and a fading rear quarter panel paint touch-up search to a G Series 3.2 Targa or coupe. My research covered all the options: everything from importing a car to has turned out to be a bare metal respray with an engine and buying cars from Hong Kong, US imports, LHD conversions, gearbox rebuild, plus re-trimmed interior elements. Targas or coupes. Part 1 Finally I found the car I was looking for: imported to Perth from Hong Kong in 1999 and serviced for two owners by RJP Motorsport, so I knew it was in good hands. After lengthy discussions with the owner I flew over, made the purchase, dropped it off to the CEVA depot in Perth to have it shipped to Sydney, then hopped back on the plane home. The car seemed to be in pretty good condition: it appeared to be straight with no real damage. I found out later when it was stripped back that there were some minor repairs needed; so these, along with all the usual bumps and scrapes of a 29 year old car were cleaned up in the paint process. The engine and gearbox have been taken care of by Cavaco Motors in Glebe: a father and son operation with many years of factory experience between them. An oil leak that needed to be addressed was the result of the unusual situation of the copper gasket between the barrel and the case at the bottom of the sixth cylinder poking out. The case itself seemed in good shape so a top end rebuild was all that was needed. The 915 gearbox turned out to be a can of worms. It had been rebuilt twice already with some not so great parts, so the decision was made to go with a rebuilt exchange box, with mine most likely being used in a clean rebuild for a race car. The paint is in the capable hands of Ron Goodman at Exclusive Bodywerks. I went to Ron to see what could be done with a rear quarter panel that had faded substantially compared to the rest of the car. It was then pointed out to me that every panel on the car had some sort of imperfection that could use attention so what better time than whilst the engine and box are out for 6 weeks to get a full respray?

“So what better time than whilst the engine and box is out for 6 weeks to get a full respray?” I contemplated another colour for a short time: perhaps Ivory or a nice metallic green that would be period correct, but the Burgundy interior colour made the colour choice critical. Some wise minds helped me decided to keep the car factory-original and go with Meteor Metallic. The interior was in pretty good shape but needed some love too, so the front came out and were re-trimmed by John Pisani at Pro Stitch. The front seats have perforated inserts and as the perforations had changed size that year John showed great attention to detail when ordering the leather by making sure it was period correct. The back parcel shelf was packing some large aftermarket speakers so they have been ditched and the rear shelf re-trimmed.

Next issue: the resurrection of the engine and the finished product on the road.

14 - PORSCHEWILLOUGHBY.COM.AU “I could definitely see my family in a Macan; my new staff car perhaps?”

It was an amazing day. You just can’t imagine that the engineers can get so much information on your driving and the vehicle and relay it to you in a way that you understand, so you can correct your style and see a real improvement. As a family man, what do you think of the new Porsche Macan? I was lucky enough to attend the training course before the launch of the new Macan in Torquay, Victoria. Driving the new Macan S, Macan S Diesel and Macan Turbo models as well as some competitor vehicles along the Great Ocean Road was a fantastic experience. We had a fair amount of time in each car and the traffic was kind so we got a feel for the Macan’s performance along the twisty roads. As for the competitor vehicles, they didn’t even come close to the styling or engineering of the Macan. It’s a very flexible car both as a family car and a sports car and I could definitely see my family in one; my new staff car perhaps? I’ll let management decide…

PCW New arrivals! With Ben Drew Usability tips New Porsche Sales Manager ACCESSING THE BATTERY ON YOUR 987 BOXSTER/CAYMAN OR 997 CARRERA (2005-2012) WHEN YOUR BATTERY IS FLAT

The front bonnet on your Boxster/Cayman/Carrera is generally accessed by an electronic switch. This works extremely well, unless your main battery goes flat. As the battery is located under your front bonnet you will need to follow these steps to restore power to the car - 1. Turn the main key in the door lock barrel to gain access to the car.

2. Remove the fuse panel cover from the right hand wall of the driver’s foot-well.

3. Located towards to the top right hand corner of the fuse panel is a red tab with gold contacts on either side. Gently pull this out to expose the contacts. (n.b. the yellow fuse puller can be used to grasp the tab if you find it difficult to extend).

4. Clamp the positive cable from a battery booster to the red tab so that it is in contact with the gold contacts. Clamp the negative cable to the main bracket of the door-stay in the driver’s door jamb.

5. Press the bonnet release button on your key to gain access to the main battery (n.b. the bonnet switch on the door sill won’t be operational: you must use the key).

6. Once the bonnet is open you will be able to jump start the car or connect it to a charger.

7. When closing the fuse panel be sure to push the red tab back in only until it is flush with the surrounding fuses.
