Here, Japanese technocrats demarcated the borderlands through categories of ethnicity and livelihood. At the center of this endeavor was the perceived problem of nomadic decline: the loss of the region’s deep history of transhumance to Chinese agricultural expansion and capitalist extraction. -

Country Report for the Preparation of the First Report on the State of the World’s Animal Genetic Resources Report on Domestic Animal Genetic Resources in China June 2003 Beijing CONTENTS Executive Summary Biological diversity is the basis for the existence and development of human society and has aroused the increasing great attention of international society. In June 1992, more than 150 countries including China had jointly signed the "Pact of Biological Diversity". Domestic animal genetic resources are an important component of biological diversity, precious resources formed through long-term evolution, and also the closest and most direct part of relation with human beings. Therefore, in order to realize a sustainable, stable and high-efficient animal production, it is of great significance to meet even higher demand for animal and poultry product varieties and quality by human society, strengthen conservation, and effective, rational and sustainable utilization of animal and poultry genetic resources. The "Report on Domestic Animal Genetic Resources in China" (hereinafter referred to as the "Report") was compiled in accordance with the requirements of the "World Status of Animal Genetic Resource " compiled by the FAO. The Ministry of Agriculture" (MOA) has attached great importance to the compilation of the Report, organized nearly 20 experts from administrative, technical extension, research institutes and universities to participate in the compilation team. In 1999, the first meeting of the compilation staff members had been held in the National Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Service, discussed on the compilation outline and division of labor in the Report compilation, and smoothly fulfilled the tasks to each of the compilers. -

We particularly appeal to the international communities and request investigation of this systematic, ongoing, egregious violation of human rights committed by the Government of the People’s Republic of China against Falun Gong. Falun Gong, also called Falun Dafa, is a traditional Chinese spiritual practice that includes exercise and meditation. Its principles are based on the values of truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance. The practice began in China in 1992 and quickly spread throughout China and then beyond. By the end of 1998, by the Chinese government's own estimate, there were 70 - 100 million people in China who had taken up the practice, outnumbering Communist Party member. Despite the fact that it was good for the people and for the stability of the country, former President JIANG Zemin launched in July 1999 an unprecedented persecution of Faun Gong out of fears of losing control. Today the persecution of Falun Gong still continues in China. As of the end of March 2004, 918 Falun Gong practitioners have been confirmed to die from persecution. -

Received: 17 September 2019; Accepted: 23 October 2019; Published: 30 October 2019 Abstract: Droughts are among the more costly natural hazards, and drought risk analysis has become urgent for the proper planning and management of water resources in grassland ecosystems. We chose Songnen grassland as a case study, used a standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) to model drought characteristics, employed run theory to define the drought event, and chose copula functions to construct the joint distribution for drought variables. We applied two kinds of return periods to conduct a drought risk assessment. After evaluating and comparing several distribution functions, drought severity (DS) was best described by the generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution, whereas drought duration (DD) was best fitted by gamma distribution. The root mean square error (RMSE) and Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) goodness-of-fit measures to evaluate their performance, the best-performing copula is Frank copula to model the joint dependence structure for each drought variables. The results of the secondary return periods indicate that a higher risk of droughts occurs in Keshan county, Longjiang county, Qiqiha’er city, Taonan city, and Baicheng city. -

Rodents are the main reservoir host of these cestodes. Brown rats (Rattus norvegicus) are the best known and most common rats, and usually live wherever humans live, especially in less than desirable hygiene conditions. Due to the little information of the 2 hymenolepidid species in brown rats in China, the aim of this study was to understand the prevalence and genetic characterization of H. nana and H. diminuta in brown rats in Heilongjiang Province, China. Total 114 fecal samples were collected from brown rats in Heilongjiang Province. All the samples were subjected to morphological examinations by mi- croscopy and genetic analysis by PCR amplification of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COX1) gene and the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) region of the nuclear ribosomal RNA gene. In total, 6.1% (7/114) and 14.9% (17/114) of samples were positive for H. nana and H. diminuta, respectively. Among them, 7 and 3 H. nana isolates were successfully amplified and sequenced at the COX1 and ITS2 loci, respectively. No nucleotide variations were found among H. nana isolates at either of the 2 loci. -

Environmental Degradation in Heilongjiang: Policy Reform and Agrarian Dynamics in China’s New Hybrid Economy Joshua S. S. Muldavin Department of Geography, University of California, Los Angeles This paper analyzes environmental degradation in rural China as structurally embedded in China’s rapid economic growth in the post-Mao era. The theoretical discussion focuses on changes in the organization of production, resource use, and regional development. A critical assessment of the Chinese hybrid economy challenges standard views of the reforms. The overall environmental problems of state socialist agriculture in China have been aggravated following the agrarian reforms of the current regime. Rather than mitigating negative trends, marketization and privatization have brought new, qualitatively different, environmental problems. Resource decline and its attendant social problems are not limited to aspects of transitional economy but are a fundamental part of the new hybrid system. I offer an alternative explanation for interpreting increases in rural productivity as an appropriation and use of collective assets, suggesting that the mining of communal capital is hidden behind the economic growth of the rural economy. Case studies in Heilongjiang Province based on long-term field data provide a profile of three aspects: intensification of land use, agroindustrial pollution, and declining social/communal capital. Further, the political legitimacy of the state is gradually eroded by mutually exclusive fiscal constraints on expenditure and political commitments to peasant producers. Recent repression of political dissent by peasants in hinterland regions forces indirect forms of resistance to state policy. Opportunities for sustainable development are nonetheless present within China, providing that policy makers attempt to address the structural conditions of the rural sector. -

Box 184, 74 Xuefu Road, Nangang Distrit, Harbin, 150080, P. R. China Abstract West Songnen Plain is ecologically fragile area and degrading ecosystem. Over the past 50 years, interfered by the natural factors and human activities, the quality of grassland and the carrying capacity declined. It is important for the rational utilization of grassland resources and the carbon cycle study of terrestrial ecosystem by analyzing human factors on the grassland productivity. The studying sites were divided into 8 land units with relatively homogeneous natural conditions. Then identify the grassland areas interfered and those not interfered by human activities. The sum NDVI of each land unit were obtained by using satellite remote sensing data. The effects of human factors on grassland productivity were got through calculating the relative degradation index of grassland. It showed that the productivity of grassland without anthropogenic interference was much higher than that of anthropogenic interference in the growing season. The impact of human factors on grassland was smaller in west of Songnen Plain in 2002 and 2005, but bigger in 2004. There is no obvious correlativity between the climatic factors and grassland relative degradation index in west of Songnen Plain. -
Varieties from the Same Origin Using GC–MS Liyuan Zhang1*, Yingbo Yu1 & Runzhong Yu2,3*
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Analysis of metabolites and metabolic pathways in three maize (Zea mays L.) varieties from the same origin using GC–MS Liyuan Zhang1*, Yingbo Yu1 & Runzhong Yu2,3* Metabolites of the Jinyu 88, Huanong 18, and Demeiya 9 maize varieties from the same origin were isolated and identifed by GC–MS, and the specifc metabolites and metabolic mechanisms of these three varieties of maize were preliminarily analysed and discussed. The metabolites were extracted with 80% methanol and derived with N,O-bis(trimethylsilyl)trifuoroacetamide. A total of 59 metabolites were identifed. The specifc metabolites of these three varieties of maize were identifed. Four possible unknown-structure metabolites were hypothesized. The results showed that the specifc metabolites of JY88 were only involved in fatty acid metabolism. The specifc metabolites of HN18 were determined to be involved in fatty acid metabolism, glucose metabolism, and phytosterol metabolism. The specifc metabolites of DM9 were observed to participate in glucose metabolism and fatty acid metabolism. The disease resistance of HN18 was higher than that of DM9, and its grain bulk density was higher than that of DM9. JY88 was determined to be signifcantly diferent from the other two varieties, and its appearance and disease resistance were worse than those of the other two varieties. The variety with the highest nutritional value was determined to be HN18, and the variety with the lowest nutritional value was JY88. This fnding indicated that diferent maize varieties from the same origin had diferent metabolites and diferent metabolic mechanisms, which caused the three maize varieties to exhibit diferent characteristics and qualities.
