Executive Committee Report

Written by Jillian Dwyer and Fiona Somerville on behalf of the Executive Committee

With the new season 2016/2017 fast approaching the NJCA is working to implement playing formats and guidelines set down by .

Our vision for Newcastle Cricket and its supportive clubs is to increase growth within our junior game by improving Player Enjoyment, Player Development and Family Orientation. Successful implementation of this vision was achieved last season as a result of the introduction of the following Junior formats:

T20 Blast: This cricketing experience aimed at the U8's to U10's saw a significant increase in participation level of around 30% with approx. 440 registrations forming 48 teams over the four venues. This growth is easily the highest percentage rate we have experienced for many seasons.

The way in which this program was developed and promoted by CNSW and supported by the Newcastle public must be congratulated. However, we acknowledge there is still a lot of work to be done to further enhance the program to maintain its success.

Tonkin Tens: This competition was designed to integrate the players from T20 blast into normal competition cricket by NJCA member Andrew Standing and CNSW's Neil McDonald. There were 18 teams in its initial season and the feedback from players, coaches and parents has been very positive.

The NJCA also implemented a new process for selecting Representative players this season. Independent selectors were used for every age group which meant there were no coaches from last year involved in the selecting and the selectors did not have their own children in the age group they were selecting. The selectors used were all Level 2 and Level 1 coaches. We also implemented an open policy with all players invited to trial. This saw approx 60 juniors in the U12 and U13 age group trial and also resulted in the selection of some players that may not have previously had the opportunity to trial. The NJCA believe this new process is fair and just and have had several positive reports.

Numbers in our normal U11 to U18 competition cricket did not change significantly from previous seasons. After many hours of team grading we believe that the competition was reasonably close across all grades and hopefully an enjoyable one for all players.

Thank you to all of our passionate volunteers across all our Junior clubs.

Thank you to the committee members of the NJCA for their tireless efforts in ensuring that all members have an enjoyable experience in whatever format they play.

Thank you to Sharyn Beck, our NJCA Administrator, for her dedication not only to our committee but to all the clubs and players. Her support is paramount to the success of junior cricket in the Newcastle region.

Administrator’s Report

Season 2015-2016 was another successful year for junior cricket in Newcastle due the enthusiastic players, parents and amazing club volunteers that contribute so much of their time and energy. Without committee members, coaches, managers, scorers, umpires, and parents it would not be possible to have such a fantastic competition.

The NJCA is committed to providing the best junior competition possible and there have been some really special highlights and opportunities this year that I would like to mention:

Newcastle Carnivals

Newcastle was scheduled to host the U11 Ron Arendt’s Memorial Shield from Monday 4th until Thursday 7th January, 2016 again this season. This year we had 16 teams arrive in Newcastle on Sunday evening in preparation for the first game on Monday morning. Unfortunately, the rains came down....and they did not stop for a week! Despite Jillian Dwyer and Jim Brennan’s best efforts driving around Newcastle to find a dry ground there were no games played on Monday. With no break in the rain predicted an indoor carnival was organised for Tuesday which was very well appreciated by all of the visiting teams. A further indoor tournament was planned for Wednesday but as the roads around Newcastle started to flood the decision was made to cancel the carnival. I would like to express a personal thank you to Jillian Dwyer who did an amazing job in my absence. All teams were incredibly grateful for the efforts made by all in during the difficult circumstances and we received many emails from team officials expressing their gratitude. All Associations have indicated they will return in 2017!

Newcastle once again hosted the U14 Graeme Malcolm Shield from Sunday 17th until Thursday 21st, 2016. Once again, weather threatened to ruin the carnival! A heavy downpour on Saturday night and early Sunday morning washed out all turf and the majority of back-up synthetic wickets. Not to be deterred, in consultation with the visitors from Hunter Valley we were able to find able to find dry grounds for all teams. Teams were sent as far as Seaham and Raymond Terrace! Unfortunately the game moved to Redhead had to be cancelled as it appeared that Liles Oval was the only ground in Newcastle that was sitting under a rain cloud for the entire day...all other games obtained a result. An incredible effort by our curators in Newcastle saw games on turf from Monday onwards and the teams experienced some of the best grounds in Newcastle – Townson Oval, Passmore Oval, Learmonth Park and Waratah Oval. After beautiful weather for the remainder of the carnival, the eventual winners were Manly Warringah, convincingly beating North Shore at No 1 Sportsground during the Grand Final. Another very successful carnival!

Social Media

The Newcastle Junior Cricket Association Facebook page continues to be very popular this year with close to 1000 followers. In addition, the NJCA joined Twitter this year, providing a live feed of relevant content for all users. Feedback suggests that parents really appreciate the addition of this communication tool due to the easy dissemination of information and the constant flow of interesting relevant content. It has proven to be a particularly useful tool for communicating wet weather changes and will continue to be used in season 2016-2017.

Ground Improvements

Each season the NJCA commits $10,000 to assist clubs with and practice net upgrades for their grounds. In addition, the NJCA were successful in obtaining an additional grant of $4500 which enabled us to some extra work to upgrade grounds as opposed to repairing and replacing synthetic coverings. Both Lewis and Wallarah Parks had old tar run ups which were quite dilapidated and dangerous for bowlers. At both grounds, the tar run ups were removed and replaced with concrete. This enabled Lewis Park to have a full synthetic covering (rather than stopping at the stumps). Wallarah Park has always been a concrete pitch and the new concrete run up allowed a full synthetic covering to be installed also. By all reports, the players, both senior and junior, really appreciate the improvements from both a safety and performance perspective.

The NJCA contributed to the following projects in season 2015-2016:

Western Suburbs – full synthetic replacement at Novocastrian Oval;

Western Suburbs – replace tar run ups and full synthetic replacement at Wallarah Park;

Western Suburbs – replace tar run ups and full synthetic replacement at Lewis Park;

Tigers / NJCA Representative – replacement of half deck at Adamstown Park 3;

Newcastle City / NJCA Representative – repairs to synthetic at Smith Park 1 ;

Wallsend RSL Diggers – full synthetic replacement at Minmi Oval;

Valentine Eleebana – full synthetic replacement at Valentine Rugby Oval;

NJCA spare ground – repairs to synthetic at Garden Suburbs Oval

Hamilton Wickham – installation of new concrete pitch and full all-purpose synthetic covering at Thomas Armstrong Oval.

Thomas Armstrong Oval

Congratulations to Jillian and the committee at Hamilton Wickham Colts for the outstanding achievement of having a new synthetic pitch installed at Thomas Armstrong Oval. Thomas Armstrong Oval was previously a turf wicket however due to its location and the difficulty of getting curation equipment to the ground it was underutilised. Through negotiation, the Newcastle Cricket Zone, the NJCA, NDCA and NCSCA agreed cooperatively that the ground would be far more beneficial to cricket in Newcastle as a synthetic ground. The total project cost was $14230 and Hamilton Wickham were successful in obtaining grants from Newcastle City Council, Cricket NSW, and the Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group to assist with the cost of installation. Due to Newcastle City Council requirements, an all-purpose synthetic covering was placed on the concrete pitch which eliminates the need to cover the pitch with dirt for winter users, instead, soccer and rugby players are able to run straight across the pitch safely. The grand opening of the pitch was attending by Cricket NSW Chief Executive Officer Andrew Jones and representatives from NCC, NCIG, NJCA, NCZ, and NCSCA on the 11th March, 2016.

First game on the new pitch at Thomas Armstrong Oval. 5

Interdistrict U12 Gala Day

This season the NJCA decided to run a T20 gala day for our local Newcastle U12 players on Sunday the 24th January, 2016. Due to the success of the interdistrict competition with Maitland in the previous season, an invitation was extended to their Association to enter two teams. Rather than enter full teams as a team from their own club, players were asked to register individually and the NJCA allocated teams based on their location. The focus of the day was to be participation, fun and making new friends! The goal for the day was six teams of 8 players and we easily achieved this number. Teams were split into Newcastle North, South, East and West, and Maitland Maroon and Yellow. The format was 3 x 16 over games and teams were asked to nominate bowlers and batters to ensure all players were given equal opportunity.

Once again, weather played havoc with our plans. We were scheduled to play at Smith Park however the ground conditions were terrible. Fortunately, we were able to move the games to Barton and Lumsden Ovals at Belmont and whilst ground conditions were still pretty wet, it did not stop the kids from playing and having a great time! A big thank you to the Elermore Vale Rotary Club who provided a great BBQ and drinks for the players and spectators. And last but definitely not least, I would like to express my gratitude to Michael Guest and the team of dads from Warners Bay Junior Cricket who transported their mowers and prepared the grounds for play. Without them, the day could not have gone ahead. We will be looking to hold another gala day this season due to the exceptionally positive feedback from the players and parents.

Newcastle T20 Blast SCG Adventure

On Sunday, the 3rd of January, 2016, 32 Newcastle T20 Blast kids were selected to be part of the on ground entertainment during the lunch break during Day One of the Sydney test match at the SCG. What a great opportunity for the kids and parents! We look forward to being a part of this again next year.

Thank you

I would like to say thank you to the club volunteers whom I work with on a regular basis. Thank you for making the junior cricket community vibrant and friendly. I would also like to thank the NJCA Management Committee for your support and trust. I am very much looking forward to Season 2016/2017 and the exciting times ahead for Newcastle.

160 new boys and girls playing MILO T20 Blast cricket on Charlestown Oval

7

Impact of Participation Programs in the Hunter Region The Hunter Region population is 22% higher than Tasmania, with almost 300 schools, 8 Local Government Authorities, 12 Cricket Associations and 203 playing facilities. National Entry Level Programs (MILO in2CRICKET and MILO T20 Blast) performed strongly (+37%) while school engagement through products including MILO T20 Blast School Cup, MILO in2CRICKET Skills, Sporting Schools and School Ambassador delivered programs (+20%) had enormous effect driving cricket in the schoolyard and providing information to support club recruitment.

A Sport For All (Female, Indigenous, All-abilities) Females – More than forty girls participated in MILO T20 Blast centre for all-female teams in Newcastle. Newcastle City’s all-girls’ team remained undefeated in junior competition rounds while a combined Newcastle-Central Coast team won the NSW DCA Mollie Dive Shield. The McDonald’s NSW Country Championships were again held at Raymond Terrace and the region was represented by Newcoasters (Newcastle & Central Coast) and Central Northern which featured several Hunter Valley girls. Central Northern U15’s finished runners-up and four girls were selected from State Challenge matches to play for ACT-NSW Country in the National Championships which the team won in Hobart. In 2016-17 a strategy will be implemented to grow the base with the introduction of a Sixers Girls’ Cricket League to support existing programs. Indigenous - NSW male and female teams won their Finals at the National Indigenous Cricket Championships in Alice Springs. For the girls it was their 9th title in succession and it was an honour to again be involved in coaching the team. Five NSW girls including Nelson Bay’s Jemma Astley were subsequently selected in an Australian Indigenous team to tour India during May. All-Ability - Cricket was involved in annual DET multi sports days for Primary and Secondary students at the University Forum. In addition, MILO T20 Blast Schools Cup gala days were held for High School teams. These days are very rewarding to be involved in and the students really enjoy themselves. Indoor Cricket - Improved methods of data collection contributed to an increase in Indoor Cricket participants in the region. There are some great opportunities for boys and girls to represent their state and country through indoor cricket with the highlight in 2015/16 being the Indoor Cricket World Cup hosted in Brisbane. Clinics – Cricket NSW Winter Development Squad eight week pre-season program attracted 46 participants an increase of 300% on the previous season. Participants from 8-13 years of age were engaged in a range of cricket skills using contemporary training methods. A two-day Sixers holiday clinic was also conducted in Newcastle during the September holidays and clinics will be expanded in 2016-17. Events – The inaugural Plan B T20 Regional Bash featured knock-out matches between sixteen regional teams. The Hunter Hitmen played the Newcastle Blasters at Maitland Park after the fixture was transferred from Newcastle No.1 Sports Ground owing to the state of the ground. Despite a late change of venue the event was very successful engaging the cricket and wider communities, government, sponsors and the media. More than one hundred kids participated in a Sixers community clinic prior to the match which ended in a tie. Newcastle won through to the second round after securing victory in the Super Over. Facility Grants – The McDonald’s-CNSW Community Grants and Community Building Partnership Grants are two examples of support available to clubs each year to improve facilities and we were very pleased to support Hamilton-Wickham Colts application to resurface the pitch at Thomas Armstrong Oval. Toyota “Good for Cricket” Raffle – Clubs and associations continue to benefit from this fundraising opportunity with prizes provided by Toyota and the proceeds of ticket sales remaining with the club.

8

Fans - The annual Toyota Country Blitz featured NSW players visiting country regions to promote the game over three days in September. Players visiting the Hunter included NSW Captain Moises Henriques and former Test opener Ed Cowan. The visits targeted associations that have implemented national pathway programs with the players involved in a range of promotional activities engaging with school students, club cricketers, indoor cricket, administrators, sponsors including Rebel Sport, McDonalds, Toyota and Transport for NSW, media interviews and a variety of community engagements.

Volunteer Support Volunteers are the life-blood of our game who invest countless hours supporting associations, clubs and teams and we thank everyone who contributed to cricket in the region during the season. There is a comprehensive range of excellent online resources available at www.community.cricket.com.au designed to support volunteer administrators and coaches to create vibrant organisations. They include:- - “Well Played” Junior Cricket Policy - Coach Development - A Sport For All resource and training program - Umpire Recruitment - Australian Cricket Pathway - National Facility Audit - National Community Cricket Facility Guidelines - ACA Past Players Program Governance – The Australian Cricket Club and Association Framework has been released with a strategic planning template available for volunteers to use to align their club and association aims and objectives under five pillars:- Players, People, Places, Partnerships and Promotion. Strategic plans are a regular feature in presentations to local government and potential sponsors. Volunteer Recruitment & Recognition #CNSWHero – a Cricket NSW initiative recognizing volunteers that have made a significant contribution to the growth of the game. PlayCricket promotional Materials – the opportunity for clubs to create their own ‘flyer’ from a range of online templates to promote recruitment and playing formats. 2016-17 The Newcastle Junior Cricket Association Committee and clubs are the custodians of the game in the region. The NJCA demonstrated strong leadership in introducing the MILO T20 Blast program last season proving an instant success in significantly growing the number of club participants and Cricket NSW looks forward to supporting stakeholders to continue this growth again in 2016-17. Our priorities working with associations, clubs and the community are very clear with a strategic focus on:- • Cricket aiming to be No.1 for men and women, boys and girls. Therefore growing the base of female players and fans is vital and the introduction of the Sixers Girls Cricket League will be a key-component. • Implementing customer-friendly formats at all levels of the Australian Cricket Pathway. • Integrating BBL and WBBL in the participation pathway to leverage the success these competitions have in attracting fans and promoting cricket participation.

U11 DEVELOPMENT SQUAD

Written by Wayne Lambert, Coach U11 Development Squad

The Under 11’s IDCA squad had an exceptional season with 6 wins from 7 games and having equal points at the top the ladder, coming 2nd only by percentages. The team was split into 2 sides so that we could give 24 boys a representative cricket experience. Apart from the great results, all of the boys developed and improved their skills & techniques throughout the season.

The effort and commitment shown by the boys was outstanding which helped achieve the results and led to winning close games. There are some very talented cricketers within the squad.

Unfortunately the boys didn't experience a rep cricket Carnival as the U11 Ron Arendts Carnival was washed out. A special thanks to Jillian Dwyer and Jim Brennan for their efforts that week.

A special thanks also to Steve Claridge, Ian Creer and Ian Gillard for their assistance and support with the teams at training and on game days. Also, a special thanks to all the parents who arranged lunches for our visiting teams and for traveling to Sydney for games. Without the parents support the boys would be unable to experience rep cricket hence your support is greatly appreciated.

U12 PRESIDENTS TEAM

Written by Ankur Sarawal, Coach U12 Presidents

The season started with only 2 weeks of training and the only trial game organised was washed out. Some of the players were part of the development squad from year before so that helped with team work and bonding. Overall we played 6 games in the rep competition (3 before and 3 after the carnival in Lismore) and ended up with 2 wins in the first and last game. We defeated Northern Districts in the first game and Blacktown in the last game. Out of the 4 loses 2 were very close games against Hornsby and North Shore that didn’t go our way. The last game was scheduled against Camden and unfortunately they forfeited.

The carnival in Lismore was a character building experience for the team. We played against some tough opposition and learned a lot in the process. It was great to have played different format games and the carnival was well organised.

Overall we had a pretty good season and the boys had great fun along the way. From the beginning of the season to the end, the team showed some huge improvements in their game as a team and on individual level. We should all be proud of the way we conducted ourselves on and off the field and for playing in the right spirit. I would like to thank all the parents for their commitment and support throughout the season. A special thanks to Michael Gilmour for managing the team so efficiently and David Smith and Phil Stanbridge for their help with training. It was a great honour and pleasure coaching this team and I would like to thank the association for giving me this opportunity.

U12 DCA TEAM

Written by Andrew Standing, Coach U12 DCA

Season 2015/16 proved to be very challenging on all aspects for the Under 12 DCA team. It was the first year the boys experienced the ‘step up’ to DCA cricket. They got to see first-hand the standard of play required to be successful at DCA level. We struggled to post competitive totals in all our games. While the standard of our bowling and fielding was okay, we let ourselves down on many occasions. As a result we failed to win a DCA game.

Our first game was against Hawkesbury and we were missing several players who competed in the PSSA cricket championships in Barooga. We were assisted by the IDCA team in providing three players. We did not bat out our overs and did not score enough runs. Hawkesbury chased down the total for the loss of only two wickets.

Our second game was against Bankstown. We bowled first and were in the match having Bankstown 6/79 and 7/119 before they managed to post a sizable score of 8/159. Our batting collapsed and we were bowled out for 62 with only one batsman reaching double figures.

Rain heavily influenced our third and fourth matches. Against Northern Districts (the eventual winners) when rain interrupted play we were 3/39 and proceeding steadily. A vast improvement on our previous effort. Over 90 mins were lost due to the rain and Northern Districts showed our desperate they were to play by drying the pitch and removing surface water to allow play to proceed. While there was some confusion over the resumption of play, we batted another 9 overs and posted a score of 64. In what proved to be very difficult conditions and with light rain falling, Northern Districts chased the total in 18 overs for the loss of 1 wicket.

Against Manly, the game was moved from our home to Ballast oval. This allowed play to commence, but an extremely strong southerly wind, rain and short boundary on one side of the ground saw our bowlers struggle to contain the Manly batsmen. They posted 8/198 dec in 43 overs. Our batting improved and several players posted reasonable scores but unfortunately no player could capitalise on their start and we were bowled out for 98 in 38 overs.

Our final game saw us travel to St George to play a side that had also not one a game. Again our batting let us down with some very poor shot selections. We were bowled out for 79 with only two players making double figures and nobody getting to 20. Our bowling was consistent but a crucial dropped catch of their top run scorer saw St George chase the total down for the loss of 6 wickets.

After Christmas the team travelled to Lismore for the carnival. We played 4 x 25 over games, 1 x 45 over game and the final game was 30 overs. Rain threatened to cancel the carnival, but credit to their umpires and committee, play was possible on day as the boys played in constant rain and bowled from one end in the second.

After a disappointing DCA season, we decided to give everyone an opportunity to bat and bowl. We rotated the order and allowed everybody the opportunity to contribute. We won our first 2 games and pushed North Shore to the wire in a very exciting run chase. We finished 3rd in our pool on run rate. It was pleasing to watch the boys manage games on their own. The skills learned will keep them in good stead going into future matches.

Congratulations to Ben Standing who was awarded the ‘Spirit of Cricket’ award for the carnival. Ben recalled a batsman who was given out run-out when he did not believe he had control of the ball when he broke the stumps as wicket-keeper. The sportsmanship shown by approaching the umpire and recalling the batsmen will be remembered for a long time by players in our team and Mid-north Coast.

U13 IDCA TEAM

Written by Jason Styles, Coach U13 IDCA

The rep season for the U13 Presidents was a positive one with strong rep level cricket development shown by the whole team. On the back of a strong selection process from the rep subcommittee the overall improvement in strength of the side was evident is on field results, finishes second to last season 2014/2015 we had a realistic chance of top 4 2014/2015, barring some unlucky injuries that slowed our storming run to the finals, ultimately finishing 6th. A first up loss to Sutherland was followed by two wins and the players showing real belief in the team going into carnival season. However losing our first and reserve keeper to broken hands over Christmas was significant to team structure. We were grateful for the job Jake Hainsworth did in coming back to IDCA to keep wicket but the loss of bowling options was the real limitation. Coaching the group was as enjoyable as it was rewarding. Seeing the boys bowl to a 7 -2 field against Manly regular season defending 57 on a blowy Collaroy Plateau and getting North Shore DCA 6/55 at carnival defending 59 were personal best moments, North Shore won’t live that down in a hurry.

Our strongest regular season performance was our second game, in wind at Smith Park cruising to a victory 2 down, an inspiring bowling spell from Blacktown saw us 7 down not troubling the scorers. Experience of our vice captain Jacob Humphrey and brave tail order batting steered us to the character building win.

Our Ballina carnival was a case of so close yet so far, we lost game one by 16 runs batting two short thanks to allergic reaction to antibiotics in warm up and our captain being bit on the neck and chest waiting to bat by a spider. We learnt great lessons about the importance of saving every run in the field as we managed a draw and a loss from realistic wins, but learnt a lot about the pressures of the game. As last year I can say the highlight of our carnival was our daily afternoon pool sessions at the motel and with pride that the boys represented Newcastle in the finest manor.

Congratulations to all of the boys, they played like a team and played some great cricket at times and were in most

A big thank you to all the parents, I could not have been more proud to have coached this fine team of young men.

U13 DCA

Written by Cameron Hainsworth, Coach U13 DCA

This was the second season in DCA competition for our boys. After finding out what DCA was all about the previous year the boys were excited about their prospects for the season ahead. We had 2 new members to the team from last season. We played 5 DCA competition games in the Gee Shield before competing in the Ballina carnival.

We had 2 trial games against Inner West Harbour and our annual fixture against Illawarra. A loss and a win respectively gave the boys a great hit out for the start of the competition. In an improvement from last season we had 2 victories and 3 losses. One of the losses was hopefully a great learning curve for the boys in chasing a small total. It was against the eventual winners of the division and highlighted out lack of discipline and mental approach to the game.

This year saw some of the boys rewarded with representative selection in other teams. In PSSA cricket Jake Hainsworth and Taj Annan (Hunter Region) Jarrod Pitt and Jack Hartigan (Polding) played in the PSSA State carnival at Barooga. From all reports the boys performed admirably with Jack Hartigan being selected and captaining the NSW PSSA side. Also in a fantastic achievement Angus McTaggart was selected in the Newcastle Under 14 Kookaburra Cup side even though he was an Under 13 player. It proves if you’re good enough you’re old enough.

In our first home game we were honoured to have former Newcastle captain and one of the greatest cricketers in Newcastle Simon Moore address the team. Simon handed the 2 new debutants their baggy greens and spoke of his times of representing Newcastle. Simon even brought his first Newcastle cap he wore as a junior which the boys were most impressed.

In the New Year we participated in the Ballina carnival. Due to Angus and Jack playing in representative carnivals at the same time we were left without our captain and vice-captain. Taking it in our stride and not to disrupt the IDCA team competing at Ballina we were lucky enough to have 2 train on squad members Seth Rumble and Matthew Whitington come into the side. Jake Hainsworth was selected as Captain and Jeremy Nunan as Vice-Captain to lead us at Ballina. If someone had said to me before the Ballina carnival “would you be happy if you finished 6th” the answer would of been definitely YES. The fact we did finish 6th is an unbelievable achievement from our boys. It was though it was a different team at Ballina and all the boys performed the way that I have known they can. The spirit and fun they showed on the field was a pleasure to watch. We were meant to play 5x50 over games over 5 days at Ballina. Due to bad weather these we reduced to 2xT20 games and 3x50 over games. Our last pool game was against Brisbane North. In one of the greatest victories I have been involved in our boys chased down their runs in the last over being 9 wickets down. We ended up coming second in our pool with 3 victories and 1 loss.

It is an honour and pleasure to coach the boys. I can only hope the bonds and spirit within the team will benefit them in years to come. They should be proud of the way they conducted themselves and performed throughout the season.

Thank you to all the parents for their support and assistance throughout the season. A big thank you to Kathy Hartigan for consistently scoring and everyone else for helping out. My assistant coach Mark McLachlan for his valued input and warming up the boys for each game. And lastly Garth Annan for being manager.

U14 DCA

Written by Heath Anderson, U14 DCA Coach and Manager

The boys faced challenges through injury, wet weather and a hard season draw and performed very well.

To reach the DCA final is a great achievement, unfortunately again the boys fell short of the main goal. However coming 2nd is a great result!

During the season the boy’s character showed belief, confidence and there never give up attitude that was evident in our semi-final against Central Coast.

Again our bowling attack performed extremely well leading the way, at times our application in batting put us under pressure. The boys need to develop their ability to build partnerships and fulfil their responsibility when batting next season.

Our team for the Graeme Malcolm carnival was changed with 6 boys selected to play at the state challenge in Dubbo. With January’s big wet also to deal with the team performed very well, it was pleasing to see players set up and perform well. Thanks to the boys who played in the carnival and for Jason Borrow for coaching the side.

Thanks to Sally, Dave and Grant for scoring, thanks to the parents for providing meals, assistance and support during the season.

Thanks to Paul Gray for his ongoing support and commitment to these boys, his passion and belief in these boys is appreciated.

Finally thanks to Kain, Mitch, Joel, Jake, Ned, Josh, Nathan, Jasper, Tamas, Edan, Cooper and Toby for your respect, behaviour, attitude, desire and sportsmanship. Again we are all proud of you and your achievements.

U15 DCA

Overall we had another successful season. After the DCA 5 rounds, we were beaten by Manly in an extremely competitive quarter final and proved that we can compete with the best sides in the competition.

The side welcomed 3 new players this season in Rory Kalnins, a wicket keeping left hander opening bat, Jack Montgomery, a leg spinning left handed batsman & Jonathan Marsden, a left handed opening bowler, as well as Rohan Davis returning to the side to strengthen our batting middle order. The middle order has been our Achilles heel for a few seasons & we certainly took steps forward towards strengthening our depth in this area.

We had some standout performances during the season with the highlights being:

Michael Richardson 38 no vs Blacktown in round 2 was invaluable to get us over the line after a round 1 loss & get our season moving in the right direction. Rory Kalnins 122 & Cal Fowler 5/22 in a must win round 5 game vs Central Coast. Josh Claridge 94 no vs Manly in the quarter final.

The side played in the Hunter Valley Carnival playing fantastic team cricket & going through undefeated to claim the trophy. Ahmed Badat & Aiden Galvin were the leading batsman & bowler from the carnival overall results.

We also had 4 players from our side represent Newcastle in the Bradman Cup. Players selected were Joshua Claridge, Rory Kalnins, Luke Muddle & Glenn Winsor. This was a great representation from the boys considering they were playing a year up.

The DCA season summary results & highlights are below.

Round 1: Newcastle (137 all out) defeated by Manly (3/148) A solid start of 70 runs for the first wicket was undone very quickly as we collapsed to 137 all out. Score was never enough especially with Oliver Davies in top form…helped along by poor bowling and fielding. A game to forget. Batting: Rory (43), Glenn (28) and Ahmed (26) Bowling: Glenn (1/5)

Round 2: Blacktown (137 all out) defeated by Newcastle (7/138) Good tight bowling allowed us to restrict Blacktown to 137 all out. We made hard work of chasing down a low total but prevailed after a crucial unbroken 8th wicket partnership of 48 runs between Michael and Luke. Batting: Michael (38 no) Bowling: Luke (2/8), Callan (2/35)

Round 3: Newcastle (140 all out) defeated Georges River St Georges (91 all out) We scored a modest total of 140 with Rory and Glenn the main contributors. Great bowling by Aidan and Luke put St Georges under pressure early on and never recovered and were eventually skittled out for 91. Great performance in the field. Batting: Rory (46), Glenn (35) Bowling: Aidan (7-5-2-2), Callan (2/28), Glenn (1/8)

Round 4: Newcastle drew Camden (rain washed out play)

Round 5: Newcastle (7/236) defeated Central Coast (118 all out)

26

A must-win game for us to qualify for finals. A great batting performance by Rory, who scored the first hundred for the DCA squad, with good contributions by Michael and Rohan allowed us to reach our highest ever total of 236. Another excellent bowling and fielding performance resulted in an easy win with Callan getting a 5-fer. Batting: Rory (122), Michael (32), Rohan (25) Bowling: Callan (5/22) and tight bowling by Aidan, Luke and Glenn.

Quarter-Final: Newcastle (6/183) defeated by Manly (7/185) A great knock by Josh, ably supported by Glenn, Michael and Liam allowed us to reach a competitive total of 183. Unfortunately, this was not enough to contain Oliver Davies who scored a hundred. Had we taken a few chances he offered us; the outcome may have been different. Fielding let us down in this game. Batting: Josh (94 no), Glenn (21), Michael (23), Liam (25) Bowling: Aidan (2/27), Ahmed (2/7)

16 IDCA

Written by Peter Whitty, U16 IDCA Manager

Well another cricket season means another representative season for the select few. 2015/2016 season brought five (5) new faces to the U/16 Newcastle IDCA team eager to impress and test their skills against their peers. Coach Darren Castle organised a few pre-season training sessions, Big Tom Wesche was selected to Captain this motley crew, and all was in readiness for Newcastle to vie for the Andrew Blamey Cup of 2015/2016.

Round 1 saw a home game against the old nemesis, ‘Manly-Warringah’. We batted first on a very hot day. Sharp bowling, only surpassed by their (Manly’s) sharper tongues, meant a tough day was had by all. Before you could say ‘over’ our innings was over and they rolled us……………… all out for 81 runs!! In reply we had them 6 for 48. A few missed opportunities after the lunch break saw Manly prevail in the 32nd over.

Round 2 and Newcastle had an away game against a new look Hornsby team. This team had 11 new players and they were vastly improved from previous seasons, so much so, they ended up winners of the cup! We batted first and ended up with a total of 131. Hornsby openers came out bashing (50 off 30 balls) and chased down our total in 33 overs.

Back to the drawing board and in doing so meant back to the winners circle! Round 3 saw another home game against NWS Hurricanes. Again, not an inspirational display with the bat as our total reached 128 runs. Our bowlers reacted to the task ahead. Six different bowlers took the required wickets (Nathan Humphries best taking 3/9) and NWS were all out for 75 runs in the 36th over.

------Break now for Christmas!!------

Round 4 brought in the New Year and another win for the good guys! An away game against Sutherland. The week leading to the game saw the Sydney area (Shire included) dumped with precipitation exceeding 100+ mm. Our game had to be moved to a ground that can be best described as a ‘swamp’. Runs were hard to come by (both sides). ‘Sutho’ batted first and we had them all out for 67 runs in the 35th over. In reply, we chased down the target in the 37th over thanks to Nathan Humphries and Matt Whitty.

Confidence was high leading into the remaining two games. Round 5 against Penrith (away) was probably our best and gutsiest win! Penrith batted first and struggled early to be 5/18 then rallied to be 145 after 50 overs. On earths hottest day Newcastle chased the total down in the 37th over thanks to Gim Kelly and Lachlan Bowles.

Round 7 was our last game for the season and our junior rep career (Round 6 was a bye). A home game against an improved Central Coast team who also were on a winning streak. Newcastle committee had arranged our game to be played on No1 Sports Ground and it was appreciated by all. Ideal weather day matched only by ideal ground (incl facilities) and Newcastle were victorious again.

On behalf of the Coach (Darren Castle) and myself I would like to congratulate the boys and their parents, past and present, on everything that is required to be committed to representative cricket. Time, transport, umpiring, scoring etc. is all voluntary and given up without a fuss. Parents and/or guardians can be proud of the young men their children have become! They have been funny, frustrating and a tad kooky, but above all, respectful.

The game of cricket delivers so much to its participants and officials and expects little in return, other than respecting its traditions and continue to promote and play the game we all love.

1st Round- Newcastle vs. North Shore

Newcastle won the toss and chose to bat first at Learmonth Park. However, we were quickly in trouble at 2/11 with both openers out. We slowly recovered, with Jason Sangha and Luke Hitchcock staying in. These two put on 190 runs for no loss until Jason was caught for 138. Luke was out soon after for 65. Some quick fire runs from Keith Moody (38) pushed the total up to 7/264. North Shore started steady, however could not keep up with the high run rate required, and ended up all out for 219. Greg Hayes took 3 for 47 off 11, while Andrew Saville picked up 2 for 52 off 11. There were also 3 run outs.

2nd Round- Northern Districts vs. Newcastle

Newcastle won the toss and batted first again. We were in trouble early, again, being 3/12. Luke Hitchcock (56) and Keith Moody (26) steadied the innings, and Wilson McTaggart (83) brought the innings to a close at 8/252. The tail also wagged, with Greg Hayes (24) and Zach Mace (39) scoring some quick runs at the end. Northern Districts looked threatening, but some tight bowling by Zach Mace (2/18 off 9) and Daniel Standing (3/24 off 6) forced them to take risks and they ended up on 5/118 after 40 overs, when rain forced the match to end.

5th Round- Penrith vs. Newcastle

Newcastle won the toss and batted, starting relatively slowly on a thick outfield. The middle order failed to build on the start given by Luke Hitchcock (59) and William Davis (57), ending the innings on 8/174 after 60 overs. Penrith were also hampered by the slow outfield, falling 4 runs short at the conclusion of the 60 overs. Wilson Mctaggart (2/25 off 11), Zach Mace (2/33 off 11) and Andrew Saville (2/22 off 7) all contributed to the successful defence.

QF- Newcastle vs. Bankstown

Bankstown won the toss and bowled first. Newcastle struggled against their bowling, with only Luke Hitchcock (37) and Keith Moody (43) putting up much resistance, leaving us on 9/186 after 60 overs. However, we bowled very well, almost pulling a victory out of the jaws of defeat. Unfortunately, Bankstown got over the line with just 10 balls to spare. James Beatty (2/42 off 12) and Zach Mace (2/36 off 11) were the two bowlers that put up the most resistance.

U13 GIRLS REPRESENTATIVE TEAM

Written by Tom Anderson, Coach U13 Newcoasters/Mollie Dive Girls Representative Team

This year’s Mollie Dive competition for Under 13 girls was changed and was once again run by the DCA. It was a 6 round competition that feature teams from the ACT to the North Shore of Sydney.

I talked to both Newcastle and the Central Coast Associations about forming a competitive team to see if we could win this prestigious competition. We organized a trial on the Central Coast for the team and had a great turnout of 25 girls. Picking the 13 girls to move forward was a difficult task but in the end we as coaching staff of Tom Anderson and Lyle McGuigan were more than happy with the team.

At this stage I would just like to thank Sharyn Beck (Newcastle Admin) and Lindy Peters (Central Coast Admin) for their support and forward thinking to allow this team to be formed.

As it turned out, we went through the competition undefeated winning the final against Bankstown in a tight but comfortable win. Every girl contributed along the way and should be proud of their efforts.

Special mention to Clare Webber who won the player of the Mollie Dive Comp as well as the batting award and Sophie Shelley who won the bowling award for the Mollie Dive. Finally, Rhiannon Radcliffe won the Coaches award for the season for her efforts with the ball and in the field. Rhiannon was always asked to bowl when we needed tight overs. She did this without fanfare and got us into a winning position in more than one game.

Thanks to my Co Coach Lyle McGuigan for his support and vast knowledge of cricket especially bowling.

Also thanks to the parents of the girls who could see the vision Lyle and I had for the team and supported the us in every way. From scoring to suppling lunch all the parents were fantastic.

Finally, I just want to say what an honour and a privilege it was for you to allow Lyle and myself to coach and mentor your daughters. It was a fantastic experience.
