The New Moon in Black Space The New Moon in Black Space: The Poetics of Ummah By Andre Basheir A thesis submitted to the Graduate Program in Cultural Studies in conformity with the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada January, 2021 Copyright © Andre Basheir, 2021 Abstract This work examines how diasporic Black and South Asian Muslims in Toronto and New York practice ummah (Muslim brotherhood and sisterhood, global Muslim unity). Through online surveys, in-person interviews, and ethnographies of mosques, it becomes clear that the ummah illuminates interracial connections and collaborations. My work shows that interracial ummah is not in plain sight but, if read alongside Édouard Glissant’s “Poetics of Relation” and Khal Torabully’s “Coolitude,” it can be illuminated. In addition to qualitative research, this dissertation analyzes poetics (through hip hop and soca music), poetry, film, and the visual arts as well as conversations about carnival, Pride (Toronto), and cultural appropriation. I look to concepts such as Orientalism, coolitude, homonationalism, and indentured labour, to address Islam in relation to modernity, racial attachments, and spatial resistances. These different analytical sites and concepts allow me to theorize different practices of inclusion, exclusion, belonging, and unbelonging to think through the complexities of Caribbean (Black and South Asian) Muslim identifications; the focus on poetics, which is touched on throughout, shows how ummah exists as a form of sonic transnationalism. Ultimately, in highlighting diasporic, transnational, narrative (interview), and creative expressions of ummah, this project reconceptualizes the figure of the Muslim, moving it away from a problematic geographically fixed location toward a more robust, shifting, and relational category of belonging. i Acknowledgements First, a huge thank you to my supervisor Katherine McKittrick, who went above and beyond her duties as a supervisor and a mentor to ensure the best quality of my work through her generous support. 1865. The British government was in power in India and in a position to replace the labour force lost to the abolition of the slave trade. When labour recruiters told Lakshmi, a young girl of the Kumi caste, about emigration depots now opening to take her to a land of riches, her path of escape from poverty and the cruel whims of her uncle’s family became clear.     Ohio University The glamorization of alcohol in contemporary Guyanese Chutney music Nadine Sanchara April, 2016 The glamorization of alcohol in contemporary Guyanese Chutney music Introduction/Background Music is an integral part of Guyanese culture. Being a multi-ethnic, multi-religious society, musical encounters, musical interaction and musical exchange are of special importance, especially in exploring the transfer and adoption of musical attributes across and among cultural communities (Cambridge 6). This paper aims at highlighting the extent to which alcohol use is glamorized in Guyanese Chutney music. Since music can influence action (Engels et al. 530) it is important to understand the lyrics of these songs in order to begin to tackle a larger problem. Chutney music is often referred to as an “Indo-Caribbean” genre of music, present in the Caribbean, mainly in Trinidad, Guyana and Suriname. It is largely influenced by Indian music, particularly Bhojpuri folk music (Bhojpuri is a language spoken in some Indian regions such as Utar Pradesh and Bihar, from where many Indian immigrants were brought to Guyana during indentureship). Chutney music does, however, have influences from African, Western and other cultures. It is a fast paced genre of music which makes use of instruments such as the harmonium, dhantaal, dholak and tabla, among others (Ramnarine 12). As much a part of Guyanese culture as Chutney music is the culture of “rum drinking.” As of 2010, the average Guyanese over 15 years old consumed more than eight liters of pure alcohol each year, compared to a global average of 6.2 liters (WHO 155). A study conducted by the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD) of the Organization of American States (OAS) in 2008 revealed that alcohol is the number one drug abused in Guyana (1).

    Middle Atlantic Review of Latin American Studies, 2020 Vol. 4, No. 2, 174-193 Beyond Créolité and Coolitude, the Indian on the Plantation: Recreolization in the Transoceanic Frame Ananya Jahanara Kabir Kings College London [email protected] This essay explores the ways in which Caribbean artists of Indian heritage memorialize the transformation of Caribbean history, demography, and lifeways through the arrival of their ancestors, and their transformation, in turn, by this new space. Identifying for this purpose an iconic figure that I term “the Indian on the Plantation,” I demonstrate how the influential theories of Caribbean identity-formation that serve as useful starting points for explicating the play of memory and identity that shapes Indo-Caribbean artistic praxis—coolitude (as coined by Mauritian author Khal Torabully) and créolité (as most influentially articulated by the Martinican trio of Jean Barnabé, Patrick Chamoiseau, and Raphaël Confiant)—are nevertheless constrained by certain discursive limitations. Unpacking these limitations, I offer instead evidence from curatorial and quotidian realms in Guadeloupe as a lens through which to assess an emergent artistic practice that cuts across Francophone and Anglophone constituencies to occupy the Caribbean Plantation while privileging signifiers of an Indic heritage. Foreword Much has been written recently about the national problem of low levels of civic and political participation. In California, one of the most worrisome aspects of that problem is low voter turnout among the state’s Asian, black, and Latino populations. After studying the data carefully, Professors Citrin and Highton find that a relatively small set of background factors—age, educational attainment, income, and residential stability—account for most of the turnout differences observed across California’s white, black, and Latino populations. They also estimate that if blacks and Latinos had the same socioeconomic profile as whites, their voting rates would be very similar.

    Middle Atlantic Review of Latin American Studies, 2020 Vol. 4, No. 2, 56-86 “Meh Just Realize I’s Ah Coolie Bai”: Indo-Caribbean Masculinities, Chutney Genealogies, and Qoolie Subjectivities Ryan Persadie Women and Gender Studies Institute University of Toronto [email protected] In the Anglophone Caribbean, nationalist discourses of sexual citizenship are inextricably linked to the afterlife of colonialism and its far-reaching and affective legacies, resonances, and continuities as it reinscribes alterity on the bodies of sexual and gendered “others.” Focusing our optics on the Indo-Caribbean, I explore how archives of chutney music offer disruptive methods, strategies, and praxes of transgression that trouble discourses of “normative” Creole (Afro-Caribbean) and heteronormative nationalisms as “authentic” ideologies of Indo- Caribbean gendering—notably, masculinity. Drawing upon historical genealogies of sexual- sacred erotics found within the Hindu, women-exclusive, pre-wedding Indo-Caribbean tradition of matikor, I interrogate how men artists in chutney music spaces perform what I conceptualize as “qoolie subjectivities,” or distinct embodied languages of self that operate through what I argue are long-standing entanglements of Indo-Caribbeanness and queerness that, when excavated via the body, cultivate critical forms of Indo-Caribbean knowing and living. In this essay, I specifically focus on acts of remaking the pejorative term “coolie” from a grammar of harm to one of reclamation, and agentive potential. Such performances choreograph embodiments of erotic self-making, or “qoolieness,” as methods of pursuing transgressive Indo-Caribbean means of doing nonnormative gender and sexuality, offering us important vocalities that speak through genealogies of (post)indentureship chutney feminisms.

Contact: [email protected] The Trajectories of Transplants: Singing Alhâ, Birhâ, and the Râmâyan in the Indic Caribbean Peter Manuel Abstract: Indo-Caribbean music culture includes a stratum of traditional genres derived from North India’s Bhojpuri region. This article discusses three such genres: Alhâ- singing, an archaic form of birhâ, and an antiphonal style of singing the Tulsidas Râmâyan. Despite the lack of supportive contact with the Bhojpuri region after 1917, these genres flourished until the 1960s, after which the decline of Bhojpuri as a spoken language in Trinidad and Guyana, together with the impact of modernity in general, undermined their vitality. A comparative perspective with North Indian counterparts reveals illuminating parallels and contrasts. Indo-Caribbean music culture is a rich and heterogeneous entity, comprising syncretic commercial popular hybrids like chutney-soca, unique neo-traditional forms like tassa drumming and local-classical singing, and traditional genres like chowtâl which are essentially identical to their South Asian forebears. In this article I examine a particular stratum of Indo-Caribbean music, in the form of a set of narrative folk song genres transplanted from North India’s Bhojpuri region during the indentureship period (1845-1917).
