DECEMBER 2016

WOLF TRACKS Black Hills High School UPCOMING EVENTS PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

December 8 Winter Band Concert Dear Wolfpack Nation; 7:00 in PAC Wow, it is already the beginning of December and winter break is just around the corner! December 12 Now is a great time to check in on your student’s progress. The end of the semester is BHAM Meeting January 27thm which means 6 weeks left before final grades will be posted. If a student 6:30 in Band Room needs some additional help, now is the time to get that help. Encourage your student to attend PACK to get help. December 13 Senior Ad Workshop 4:00—8:00 in Room 107 I want to make a quick announcement regarding school sponsored dances. We will no longer allow any dancing where students are not facing each other. The students are December 14 already grumbling about this change, however, the dancing has gotten inappropriate and Booster Club Meeting we cannot allow it. Along those lines we encourage you to come by the dance and see 6:30 in Staff Lounge how students are dancing. You don’t have to stay long just come by and say hi and be seen by your son or daughter. When I ask students if they would dance at a wedding with December 14 a family member like they dance at a school dance, their response is “no”. We have tried Winter Choir Concert 7:00 in PAC to compromise in the past, however the students end up taking advantage of the compromise and push the limit, so we believe dancing face to face will help solve the December 19—January 2 problem. Our next dance will be Sadies in February. No School Winter Break Winter sports have started and we are looking forward to watching our student athletes compete. In upcoming news: we have an Orchestra concert Dec. 1st at 7:00 at Tumwater January 16 Middle School, a Band concert Dec. 8th at 7:00 in the PAC, and a Choir concert Dec. 14th No School th Martin Luther King Day at 7:00 in the PAC. We also have a BHHS Booster Club meeting Dec. 14 at 6:30 in the staff lounge. As always we would love to see you at these events and the Booster Club is January 17—20 open to all so join us!! Art Exhibition Periods 1, 2, 4, 5, & 6 It is important students are here on time to all classes. We are still experiencing too many tardies and unexcused absences. Please work with us to assist your son or daughter so February 2—4 they are here on time and ready to learn. This positive habit will transcend to all areas of Winter Musical their lives. 7:00 PM in PAC

February 9 & 10 Lastly, I do want to thank you for allowing us the opportunity to work with your sons and Winter Musical daughters. We really have some great students here at Black Hills High School, they 7:00 PM in PAC brighten my day every single day and I am grateful I get to work with them on getting a top notch education. February 11 Sadies Please feel free to contact me anytime if you have any question, comments or feedback. 8:00 PM The last day of school before winter break is Friday Dec. 16th, and we return to school on rd Tuesday January 3 .

Have a Great December!! Go Wolves!!

Sincerely,

Dave Myers Principal WOLF TRACKS PAGE 2

VISUAL ARTS (Rm. 75)

Each class period is a different show! (To see a particular artist’s work, follow his/her class schedule.)

Bring your camera! Meet the artists! Refreshments provided by the artists! When weather or other events impact our ability to transport our students or to operate our schools, these are the proce- dures that we typically follow. Beginning at about 5:45 AM, the district provides delay and closure information to local television and radio stations using www.flashalert.net. Information is posted to both this site and to Tumwater School District site, www.tumwater.k12.wa.us.

Communication to Families: SchoolMessenger System

The district has its own emergency communications system, which allows us to very quickly place a phone call and/or email to all families and staff. If there is an issue that will impact the start of the school day we will send a robo-call to all families at around 6 a.m. The same message will also be sent in an email. In order for this system to work best, please take the following steps:

1. Keep Your Contact Information Up-to-Date To update your contact information, contact your school secretary.

2. Set Your Preferences This new system is designed so that you can choose to be contacted in different ways depending on when the call is placed and the type of call. Go to http://tumwater.schoolwires.net//site/Default.aspx?PageID=233 for instructions on how to access the system yourself to make these choices.

You may also call the district’s information line 709-7999, watch KOMO Channel 4, KING Channel 5, KIRO Chan- nel 7, or KCPQ Channel 13 or check any of the following radio stations

A.C.T. DAYS ARE IMPACTED BY LATE START

If weather causes a late start on a Friday A.C.T. day, students will be released at the regularly scheduled time. There will be no early release for teacher collaboration.

HOW ARE DECISIONS MADE? When weather events happen, there are always questions about the process for making decisions to delay or close schools. Here are typical steps that are followed. 3:00-5:00 AM: The Transportation Supervisor drives bus routes to determine road conditions. He also checks local, state and regional weather forecast information. 5:15 AM: The Transportation Supervisor makes recommendations to the Superintendent relative to school closure or late start. The Superintendent may check forecasts and consult with other local school district leaders before making the final decision by 5:45 AM, when he contacts staff to alert the media

BHHS SWIM & DIVE TEAM MAKE SCHOOL HISTORY The BHHS Swim and Dive team finished their most successful season in school history. The team finished 2nd in league, 4th in the district, and 17th in state.

Junior CeCe Pennella finished the season with school records (6 dives and 11 dives), and finished in 3rd place, the highest finish for an individual in school history.

Freshman Emma Prybylski finished with 5 school records, including 3 individual (50 free, 200 free, and 100 backstroke) and 2 relay records. She also finished with the 10th fastest time in the state, and was the 4th fastest freshman at the state meet. The 200 medley relay (Emma Prybylski, Leah Rietema, Brielle Bryan, and Kalli Bishop) and the 400 freestyle relay (Brielle Bryan, Josie Krysinski, Leah Rietema, and Emma Prybylski) both finished 15th at state, with the 400 freestyle dropping 8 seconds at state to set another school record. Earlier in the season the 200 free- style relay team (Brielle Bryan, Leah Rietema, Josie Krysinski, and Emma Prybylski) as broke the school rec- ord.

By the end of the season, 59 years’ worth of school records had been wiped away, and Emma now held more school records than any other team member in school history.

Next year’s team captains Leah Rietema, CeCe Pennella, Brielle Bryan, Jacquie Pilon, and Lauren Cagle will be working hard to make next season even better.

This summer the team will also be leading the Wolves and Bears Swim Camp (with Olympia High School) in July. This camp invites all incoming high and middle school students to join the teams for two weeks to learn how to swim, or learn how to swim competitively. We are still looking for additional sponsors for the camp, so if you are interested, please contact Coach Valz at [email protected]. We include our spon- sors on camp shirts and posters, so this is a great opportunity for local businesses that are interested in sup- porting local life-long athletics. Donations to the camp through the Black Hills Booster Club are tax- deductible as well!

It has been a great season thanks to the hard work of all these girls! Great job Wolves!
