  • Walter Wilson Cobbett and the English Phantasy
WALTER WILSON COBBETT AND THE ENGLISH PHANTASY Kathryn L. Lent A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 2008 Committee: Eftychia Papanikolaou, Advisor Mary Natvig Robert Fallon © 2008 Kathryn Lent All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Eftychia Papanikolaou, Advisor Walter Wilson Cobbett (1847-1937), amateur violonist and philanthropist during the English Musical Renaissance, supported the composition and performance of chamber music in England. In 1905 and 1907 Cobbett held competitions, followed by a series of commissions over the next decade, for compositions that he called Phantasies. According to Cobbett’s announcement, the phantasies were to be twelve minutes in length, have sections that differed in tempo and meter, and had parts of equal importance. These works were to be reminiscent of the early English fantasies and were intended to supplement the longer chamber works that were popular at the time. Following a discussion of the English Fantasia and Cobbett’s musical knowledge, this thesis examines Cobbett’s phantasy competitions and commissions in addition to his definition of the term “phantasy.” After Cobbett’s ideas are established, the reactions and comments of his contemporaries are presented and discussed. The final pages discuss and analyze three of the award winning phantasies in terms of Liszt’s thematic transformation and Brahms’s developing variation. iv To My Mom v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I feel incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to work with Dr. Eftychia Papanikolaou. Her patience, encouragement and knowledge have been inspiring. I would like to thank Dr.

  • I Was Happy to Find the Tim Buckley Dvd My Fleeting House in My Mailbox Last Week
I was happy to find the Tim Buckley dvd My Fleeting House in my mailbox last week. My Fleeting House is a collection of Buckley performances coupled with commentary by Lee Underwood(Buckley's guitarist), David Browne(author of Dream Brother), and Larry Beckett(who co-wrote many Buckley songs). As a long time fan of Tim, I have seen some of the footage, but never in such pristine condition. My Fleeting House provides valuable insight into the life of Buckley, and his devotion and love for his art. There are few artists who have been as explorative with their music and voice as Buckley. He was one of the greatest innovators in pop music history. As Larry Beckett states in the video, the magic of Tim Buckley is found in realizing the conceptual evolutionary devolopment from stage to stage of his career. Unwilling to rest on his laurels, Tim was constantly challenging both himself and his audience, pushing against all sensibilities and conventions. There is much to discover in the music of this rare artist, and My Fleeting House offers special treats for both the long time fan and the uninitiated. There are 3 partial performances and eleven full length songs. My favorite one is a rare solo performance of Pleasant Street from The Christian Licorice Store, a movie in which Buckley appeared. Overall, I have high regard for My Fleeting House. I'm sure i'll be watching it again soon. Andrew Hanley Musica Britannica Ixv (London: Stainer & Bell, 1994), 58.50[pounds]; set of parts (four-part pieces) 20.50[pounds]; set of parts (two-, three- and five-part pieces) 20.50[pounds] As early as 1667 a musical authority such as Christopher Simpson could already observe regretfully that `This kind of Musick (the more is the pity) is now much neglected, by reason of the scarcity of Auditors that understand it: their ears being better acquainted and more delighted with light and airy Musick.' If the situation is perhaps a little better today, we have to thank for it a small band of indefatigable enthusiasts, connoisseurs and performers, not least among them the editors and authors of the music and books under review here. But if, as one might suspect, millenium fever is just around the corner, ready to sweep away interest in any old music that has limited popular appeal, there is a growing urgency in the task of establishing the beauties of this wonderful repertory in the consciousness of a wider musical public; a warm welcome, therefore, to all six of these volumes. Pride of place has to go to the Royall Consorts of William Lawes--a major collection of music from which only excerpts have previously been published--in a new edition by David Pinto.

  • Jeff Buckley L’Anima Fragile Del Rock
