  • Tim Buckley Il Navigatore Delle Stelle

LOG IN Guy Webster, Master of the Album Cover Photograph, Dies at 79 Over a frenetic period between the mid-1960s and the early ’70s, Guy Webster photographed many leading artists for some of rock’s best-known albums. By Richard Sandomir Feb. 19, 2019 Guy Webster was smoking pot with the Mamas & the Papas in the group’s rented house in Los Angeles in 1966 when he had an idea about how to photograph them for the cover of their debut album. He told them to head into a bathroom, where all four squeezed, fully clothed, into the tub: John Phillips sat in the foreground, and behind him were Cass Elliot, Denny Doherty and Michelle Phillips, her legs stretched across the others’ laps. (Mr. Doherty told a slightly different story: that they had been hiding from Mr. Webster in the tub.) “You can see how stoned they were,” Mr. Webster said when he showed the picture to an audience attending an exhibition about his career at the Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles in 2012. But the picture had a flaw: It included the toilet — an image, he said, that would have limited sales of the album, “If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears,” in family-oriented chain stores. “So Lou Adler,” he continued, referring to the producer of the album and the president of Dunhill Records, “came up with the idea that when we put shrink wrap over the album, and put a sticker on it that says, ‘Including “California Dreamin’,” we can sell it at Sears.

  • The Music of Tim and Jeff Buckley
A State of Grace: The Music of Tim and Jeff Buckley: A World Premiere Event “Jeff Buckley was a pure drop in an ocean of noise.” Bono “Tim Buckley embodied all the virtue of grace.” Rolling Stone Tim and Jeff Buckley’s legacy has inspired generations of musicians and listeners. The world premiere event A State of Grace celebrates their brilliant, complicated lives and music, bringing together six peerless singers — and musicians with an intimate understanding of the music of the Buckleys — teamed with images and stories. It is a moving, definitive portrait of two of the most beloved voices in rock, overseen by Gary Lucas, the legendary New York guitarist / composer who worked closely with Jeff, co-writing the immortal songs ‘Grace’ and ‘Mojo Pin’. “The music of Jeff and Tim Buckley is timeless and gracefully transcendental,” says Gary. Assembled to recapture the magic of Tim and Jeff Buckley’s songs are musicians with the depth, breadth and empathy to do them justice: Martha Wainwright, Casper Clausen (of Efterklang), Willy Mason, Camille O’Sullivan, Steve Kilbey (The Church) and Cold Specks, with Gary Lucas as musical director, backed by his renowned New York ensemble Gods and Monsters. Tim and Jeff’s music becomes a point of departure for an evening of soul- stirring reinterpretation and exploration in this trailblazing event. • Detroit Rock & Roll by Ben Edmonds for Our Purposes, The
"KICK OUT THE JAMS!" Detroit Rock & Roll by Ben Edmonds For our purposes, the story of Detroit rock & roll begins on September 3, 1948, when a little-known local performer named John Lee Hooker entered United Sound Studios for his first recording session. Rock & roll was still an obscure rhythm & blues catchphrase, certainly not yet a musical genre, and Hooker's career trajectory had been that of the standard-issue bluesman. A native of the Mississippi Delta, he had drifted north for the same reason that eastern Europeans and Kentucky hillbillies, Greeks and Poles and Arabs and Asians and Mexicans had all been migrating toward Michigan in waves for the first half of the 20th Century. "The Motor City it was then, with the factories and everything, and the money was flowing," Hooker told biographer Charles Shaar Murray." All the cars were being built there. Detroit was the city then. Work, work, work, work. Plenty work, good wages, good money at that time."1 He worked many of those factories, Ford and General Motors among them, and at night he plied the craft of the bluesman in bars, social clubs and at house parties. But John Lee Hooker was no ordinary bluesman, and the song he cut at the tail of his first session, "Boogie Chillen," was no ordinary blues. Accompanied only by the stomp of his right foot, his acoustic guitar hammered an insistent pattern, partially based on boogie-woogie piano, that Hooker said he learned from his stepfather back in Mississippi as "country boogie." Informed by the urgency and relentless drive of his Detroit assembly line experiences, John Lee's urban guitar boogie would become a signature color on the rock & roll palette, as readily identifiable as Bo Diddley's beat or Chuck Berry's ringing chords.

  • I Was Happy to Find the Tim Buckley Dvd My Fleeting House in My Mailbox Last Week
I was happy to find the Tim Buckley dvd My Fleeting House in my mailbox last week. My Fleeting House is a collection of Buckley performances coupled with commentary by Lee Underwood(Buckley's guitarist), David Browne(author of Dream Brother), and Larry Beckett(who co-wrote many Buckley songs). As a long time fan of Tim, I have seen some of the footage, but never in such pristine condition. My Fleeting House provides valuable insight into the life of Buckley, and his devotion and love for his art. There are few artists who have been as explorative with their music and voice as Buckley. He was one of the greatest innovators in pop music history. As Larry Beckett states in the video, the magic of Tim Buckley is found in realizing the conceptual evolutionary devolopment from stage to stage of his career. Unwilling to rest on his laurels, Tim was constantly challenging both himself and his audience, pushing against all sensibilities and conventions. There is much to discover in the music of this rare artist, and My Fleeting House offers special treats for both the long time fan and the uninitiated. There are 3 partial performances and eleven full length songs. My favorite one is a rare solo performance of Pleasant Street from The Christian Licorice Store, a movie in which Buckley appeared. Overall, I have high regard for My Fleeting House. I'm sure i'll be watching it again soon.
