Nico-Medea-Icon NICO-MEDEA-ICON ROCK-OPERA A PERFORMING OF PHILIPPE VINCENT 2008 CREATION A phantasmagorical biography of Nico. The silent beauty of Nico, the Egeria of Andy Warhol and inspi- ration to the Velvet Underground, fascinated such rock stars as Lou Reed and Jackson Brown or the filmmaker Philippe Garrel. Truly a mythical figure of the underground culture, her tragic end only confirmed her legendary destiny. Nico-Medea-Icon is not a biographical work on/about Nico, it’s a confrontation, a re-enacting. It aims at blowing up the idea of biography to the realm of fantasy. Heiner Müller’s Medeamaterial does not tell Nico’s story, it is more like a dream, a possible happening. Nico-Medea-Icon is a palimpsest of two overlapping myths, Nico over Medeamaterial or the opposite... NICO’S SCRAPBOOK «It would be great if one day there was a novel about me, it should be imaginary and describe my soul rather than my life. My soul and my life are two different things. My soul is called Christa. My life is Nico. Christa is the maker of Nico, and now she is tired of Nico because Nico is tired of herself. Nico has been to the top in life and to the bottom.. In 1971 Johnny Thunders formed the New York Dolls, a band of transvestites, and John Cale (of the Velvet Underground's fame) recorded Jonathan Richman's Modern Lovers, while Alice Cooper went on stage with his "horror shock" show. In London, Malcom McLaren opened a boutique that became a center for the non-conformist youth. The following year, 1972, was the year of David Bowie's glam-rock, but, more importantly, Tom Verlaine and Richard Hell formed the Neon Boys, while Big Star coined power-pop. Finally, unbeknownst to the masses, in august 1974 a new band debuted at the CBGB's in New York: the Ramones. The future was brewing, no matter how flat and bland the present looked. Decadence-rock 1969-75 TM, ®, Copyright © 2005 Piero Scaruffi All rights reserved. Rock'n'roll had always had an element of decadence, amorality and obscenity. In the 1950s it caused its collapse and quasi-extinction.

LOG IN Guy Webster, Master of the Album Cover Photograph, Dies at 79 Over a frenetic period between the mid-1960s and the early ’70s, Guy Webster photographed many leading artists for some of rock’s best-known albums. By Richard Sandomir Feb. 19, 2019 Guy Webster was smoking pot with the Mamas & the Papas in the group’s rented house in Los Angeles in 1966 when he had an idea about how to photograph them for the cover of their debut album. He told them to head into a bathroom, where all four squeezed, fully clothed, into the tub: John Phillips sat in the foreground, and behind him were Cass Elliot, Denny Doherty and Michelle Phillips, her legs stretched across the others’ laps. (Mr. Doherty told a slightly different story: that they had been hiding from Mr. Webster in the tub.) “You can see how stoned they were,” Mr. Webster said when he showed the picture to an audience attending an exhibition about his career at the Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles in 2012. But the picture had a flaw: It included the toilet — an image, he said, that would have limited sales of the album, “If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears,” in family-oriented chain stores. “So Lou Adler,” he continued, referring to the producer of the album and the president of Dunhill Records, “came up with the idea that when we put shrink wrap over the album, and put a sticker on it that says, ‘Including “California Dreamin’,” we can sell it at Sears.

  • The Music of Tim and Jeff Buckley
A State of Grace: The Music of Tim and Jeff Buckley: A World Premiere Event “Jeff Buckley was a pure drop in an ocean of noise.” Bono “Tim Buckley embodied all the virtue of grace.” Rolling Stone Tim and Jeff Buckley’s legacy has inspired generations of musicians and listeners. The world premiere event A State of Grace celebrates their brilliant, complicated lives and music, bringing together six peerless singers — and musicians with an intimate understanding of the music of the Buckleys — teamed with images and stories. It is a moving, definitive portrait of two of the most beloved voices in rock, overseen by Gary Lucas, the legendary New York guitarist / composer who worked closely with Jeff, co-writing the immortal songs ‘Grace’ and ‘Mojo Pin’. “The music of Jeff and Tim Buckley is timeless and gracefully transcendental,” says Gary. Assembled to recapture the magic of Tim and Jeff Buckley’s songs are musicians with the depth, breadth and empathy to do them justice: Martha Wainwright, Casper Clausen (of Efterklang), Willy Mason, Camille O’Sullivan, Steve Kilbey (The Church) and Cold Specks, with Gary Lucas as musical director, backed by his renowned New York ensemble Gods and Monsters. Tim and Jeff’s music becomes a point of departure for an evening of soul- stirring reinterpretation and exploration in this trailblazing event. • Jews, Punk and the Holocaust: from the Velvet Underground to the Ramones – the Jewish-American Story
Popular Music (2005) Volume 24/1. Copyright © 2005 Cambridge University Press, pp. 79–105 DOI:10.1017/S0261143004000315 Printed in the United Kingdom Jews, punk and the Holocaust: from the Velvet Underground to the Ramones – the Jewish-American story JON STRATTON Abstract Punk is usually thought of as a radical reaction to local circumstances. This article argues that, while this may be the case, punk’s celebration of nihilism should also be understood as an expression of the acknowledgement of the cultural trauma that was, in the late 1970s, becoming known as the Holocaust. This article identifies the disproportionate number of Jews who helped in the development of the American punk phenomenon through the late 1960s and 1970s. However, the effects of the impact of the cultural trauma of the Holocaust were not confined to Jews. The shock that apparently civilised Europeans could engage in genocidal acts against groups of people wholly or partially thought of by most Europeans as European undermined the certainties of post-Enlightenment modernity and contributed fundamentally to the sense of unsettlement of morals and ethics which characterises the experience of postmodernity. Punk marks a critical cultural moment in that transformation. In this article the focus is on punk in the United States.
