These results suggest that firefly luciferase arose from a fatty acyl-CoA synthetase*, with retaining the original function.

* "Fatty acyl-CoA synthetase" is an enzyme for fatty acid metabolism commonly occurring in all organisms. Luciferase homologue in nonluminous Agrypnus binodulus (AbLL) is a fatty acyl-CoA synthtase, but not luciferase.
