Buckley Policy makers continue to develop ways to control sprawl, but the problem is growing. Many studies offer evaluations of current planning efforts or suggest new ones; however, few have sought to explain the evolution of sprawl, especially as it affects open space planning. This study compares the creation and current conditions of open space planning in Edinburgh, Scotland and Baltimore, Maryland. The research specifically focuses on the Green Belt around Edinburgh, Scotland and addresses several open space management programs in and around Baltimore. Results show that history, government structure, and adherence to a regional plan achieve open space preservation goal. Additionally, the future of each city’s open space may be dependent upon their approach to planning. This study is part of the ongoing Baltimore Ecosystem Study, a multifaceted, long-term ecological research project devoted to understanding how cities function as ecosystems. -

It lists former Fellows from the foundation of the Society in 1783 to October 2002. Most are deceased Fellows up to and including the list given in the RSE Directory 2003 (Session 2002-3) but some former Fellows who left the Society by resignation or were removed from the roll are still living. HISTORY OF THE PROJECT Information on the Fellowship has been kept by the Society in many ways – unpublished sources include Council and Committee Minutes, Card Indices, and correspondence; published sources such as Transactions, Proceedings, Year Books, Billets, Candidates Lists, etc. All have been examined by the compilers, who have found the Minutes, particularly Committee Minutes, to be of variable quality, and it is to be regretted that the Society’s holdings of published billets and candidates lists are incomplete. The late Professor Neil Campbell prepared from these sources a loose-leaf list of some 1500 Ordinary Fellows elected during the Society’s first hundred years. He listed name and forenames, title where applicable and national honours, profession or discipline, position held, some information on membership of the other societies, dates of birth, election to the Society and death or resignation from the Society and reference to a printed biography. -

The route Building Stones of Edinburgh’s South Side This tour takes the form of a circular walk from George Square northwards along George IV Bridge to the High Street of the Old Town, returning by South Bridge and Building Stones Chambers Street and Nicolson Street. In she became the first woman elected to the Royal Scottish Academy. Phoebe was the sixth of their seven children. Phoebe's elder brother was William Richardson Moss, a keen art collector who owned a number of Phoebe Anna Traquair: 1852-1936 by Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Traquair shared with her brother this love of art, including a particular fascination with the work of Rossetti and that of William Blakeand her style and choice of subject matter remained deeply influenced by Blake and Rossetti's art and poetry throughout her life. During the late s Traquair continued to develop her art, working mostly on embroidered domestic textiles. This was the first of four Edinburgh interiors Traquair painted between Phoebe Anna Traquair: 1852-1936 This was her first work as a professional artist. Her murals of the song school of St Mary's Cathedral —92 won Traquair national recognition. Phoebe Anna Traquair: 1852-1936 the north wall birds and choristers sing together, and the west wall shows the four beasts singing the Sanctus. A notable work by Traquair can be viewed in the Thistle Chapel of St Giles Cathedral where she designed the earliest enamel armorial panels over the knights' seats. Charrette:essay Tales and tools: the Design Studio Brief in Architecture’s expanded field. Suzanne Ewing. Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, University of Edinburgh. ABSTRACT This essay argues that the Design Studio Brief establishes tacit disciplinary practices of architecture, as well as more explicit pursuit of topics of formulated relevance or concern. A series of tales of Design Studio Briefs from the fourth year of study at one UK Architecture School are sampled at dates which coincide with significant moments in Scotland’s recent constitutional history: the 1979 devolution Referendum, the 1997/1999 establishment of the Scottish Parliament, and the 2014 Independence Referendum. The tales are followed by a discussion on tools: towards means and practices which might inform the re-tooling of the Design Studio Brief and its ends. The lights go on a little earlier, and the heating is a little higher, and often we forget that there is still much to learn from the realm of darkness. -
Some Thoughts on Glasgow's New Gorbals
Built historiography in Glasgow’s New Gorbals – the Crown Street Regeneration Project Florian Urban In 2000, the Crown Street Regeneration Project in Glasgow’s Gorbals was completed after a master plan by Piers Gough of the London firm CZWG - Campbell, Zogolovitch, Wilkinson, Gough (Fig. 1). The Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) commended the project as a ‘highly livable neighbourhood with well-placed community facilities and attractive public spaces.’1 Built on symbolically contested grounds that were previously occupied by the Gorbals tenements (1870s-1960s) and the high-rise Hutchesontown flats (1960s- 1990s), the new development is a textbook example of neo-traditional design. Approximately 2000 residential units and numerous commercial spaces are accommodated in block perimeter buildings that enclose central courtyards and abound with historical references. Analyses have mostly focused on the operations of architectural meaning, as a linguistic or poetic expression of individual experience,2 in relation to program and function,3 as indebted to typological continuity,4 or in relation to the specificity of place.5 Little attention, however, has been dedicated to the historiographic dimension of such architecture, that is, its capacity to make a statement on the significance of past events and conditions.
