Broadway Melody
BROADWAY MELODY: The beginning of Hollywood musicals This film review features a discussion on the relationship of film criticisms written at the time of the film’s release and others, which were written years later. 10 pages long. BROADWAY MELODY: The beginning of Hollywood musicals Broadway Melody's release on February 1, 1929 captures the attention of such issues as sound replacing silence and technology rather then the usual racial and political overtones like a lot of other genres. Most musicals had very simplistic plots: boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy sings song, and boy gets girl. Although there was racial discrimination like the depiction of black speciality acts, such as the Nicholas Brothers and the Berry Brothers, as janitors etc., the story lines were none violent, free of political issues and always ended on a happy note pretty much until West Side Story. By 1960 the musical was but a thing of the past with only a few films a year. All this being said, it is important to understand the context of the genre in order to formulate criticism other then saying that the shots are simple and that the acting, in general, was lousy. As one analyses a musical such as Broadway Melody of 1929 one finds that the art of the movie musical is found in the star's ability to sing, act and dance effectively. By far the most frequent comment about Broadway Melody is that of it's relationship with Broadway and it's backstage on stage look at vaudeville performance, an activity that most of all the audiences of the 10's and 20's could relate to. -

Episode 204 - Story 2: Harry Warner Lighter Elyse: This story could reveal an unusual connection between a famous Hollywood movie producer and the propaganda machine of the Third Reich. Itʼs 1939. Nazi aggression is tearing the world apart. In Germany, anti-Semitic films are being produced on the sound stages of UFA, the once great film studio that's now controlled by Hitler. Some sixty years later, a man in California has an antique lighter engraved with the UFA company logo. What he doesn't understand is why the other side of the lighter bears the name Harry Warner, legendary Hollywood film mogul and immigrant Jew. What could possibly be the connection? The lighter is the proud possession of Robert Galant of Riverside, California. He found it at a flea market and was immediately intrigued. Robert Galant: I noticed that it had "Germany" on it, so I know it's a German lighter. Then I saw the name on there, "UFA;" it's pronounced "oofa." I knew this was during the time when Hitler was taking over UFA, using it for his propaganda machine for the military. On the other side of the lighter it had a name actually engraved on it, and I said, "oh, Harry Warner, maybe of Warner brothers." I started thinking, hey; wait a minute, what is this? By Alex Pham Times Staff Writer t is said that the ghost of Sam Warner haunts the musty spaces of the Pacific Hollywood theater, snatching cellphones and pagers and Palm Pilots when their owners look away. The forlorn movie palace, locked behind metal security gates in the heart of Hollywood, was Warner’s dream, the first theater built expressly for talking pictures. The second-youngest of the four Warner Ibrothers died at 42, never to see what the Los Angeles Times called the theater’s “dazzling” opening in 1928 — or its long, slow slide into derelic- tion in the decades that followed. Charles S. Swartz takes comfort in believing that Sam Warner’s spirit, at least, may be watching over the theater’s rebirth as a sophisticated test center for the next generation of movie technology. “The idea that we are now on the cutting edge of giving movies their next life into the 21st century would absolutely thrill him,” said Swartz, execu- tive director of USC’s Entertainment Technology Center, a research group backed by the major studios as they gird for the advent of digital cinema. If cinema’s tomorrow is taking shape in a relic of its past, it’s happening without a lot of glitz.
