Ingolstadt, 27 April 2001 Funeral For Michele Alboreto in Italy Family, Friends, companions and Fans attended the Funeral oF Audi works driver Michele Alboreto (44) at a service held on Friday aFternoon at the Catholic Parrocchia Gesu Salvatore church in Basiglio, Italy, situated south-west oF Milan. Amongst the many hundreds of guests in attendance were Michele Alboreto´s Audi driver colleagues. During the hour-long service, which was attended by the AUDI AG Board, Head of Audi Sport, Dr WolFgang Ullrich said farewell to his works driver. He again shared his heartFelt sympathy and condolences with the family of the Italian. “Michele, you gave us so much, we will miss you terribly and you will always remain in our hearts,” Dr WolFgang Ullrich concluded in his speech that he held in Italian. Michele Alboreto was Fatally injured on Wednesday while testing the Audi R8 racing sportscar on the Lausitzring. The Funeral speech oF Dr WolFgang Ullrich: “Caro Michele, your whole liFe was dedicated to motorsport, the love For your family and your close friends. I called you up for Audi in 1998 to share your experience and your energy in developing a racing sportscar For Le Mans. In the shortest time you won the hearts of the whole team and became one of us. Always open, helpful and always there - you were a wonderFul person and an extraordinary personality. With impressive proFessionalism and conviction you were a perFect representative of Audi. With enthusiasm and dedication you made it possible For us to develop an extremely successFul sportscar. You lost your liFe the day before yesterday, while undertaking your Favourite work in the cockpit of our R8 in preparation For your great goal – the victory in Le Mans with Audi. Where should I start from? Talk about a party with many other drivers that ended up with everyone all dressed up jumping in a swimming pool? Or should I tell of the building tension and awkwardness while we were all waiting for him in La Spezia(1) on the deck of the aircraft carrier Garibaldi with the admiral and the guard of honour all lined up in full uniform. Certainly a glorious moment: unfortunately Michele was one and a half hour late. This because Enzo Ferrari had kept him in his office in Maranello(2) talking about trivial issues which went on forever. The Drake(3) was well aware of Michele’s important engagement and nonetheless… But that was Enzo Ferrari. Sometimes he would be as spiteful as a child. But once there, Michele made up for his delay thanks to his terrific friendly attitude: he started telling jokes and anecdotes, pictures were taken together with sailors and officers, autographs were signed and the icing on the cake were his wheelies on a Vespa all along the flight deck of the battleship.

F1 Circuits Past and Present – Ceasars Palace You’re listening to the Sidepodcast mini series F1 Circuits Past and Present, a second series that looks closely at tracks that have hosted the sport across the years. This is the fifth episode, and time to look at a classic track that has made an impressive name for itself despite featuring on the calendar on only two oc- casions. For a track that held only two Formula One Grand Prix events, the Ceasars Palace circuit has earned itself quite the reputation. The race had previously been held at Watkins Glen, but after mounting concerns re- garding safety issues, crowd control and unpaid debts, the track was dropped from the calendar. The US still had a strong presence in the sport, with the United States West event scheduled to start the 1981 sea- son at Long Beach. F1 bosses wanted more, though, and looked around for another potential candidate for hosting a race. They opted for the rather bizarre setting of the car park of the Ceasars Palace hotel in Las Vegas. It seemed like an odd choice, but the idea was to improve the public perception of the city, and of course shine a spotlight on a potential tourist destination. Bookmarking the 1981 season, the Ceasars Palace Grand Prix finished off the year in the hot and dry desert conditions. Although a race in a car park might sound less than professional, the track was well put to- gether, it just still wasn’t popular with drivers. One of the few anti-clockwise circuits, drivers found it tough going due to the strain on their necks as well as the difficult heat conditions.
