The journal began in 1990 as The Quarterly. In 1992, with volume 3, the name changed to The Quarterly Journal of Music Teaching and Learning and continued until 1997. The journal contained articles on issues that were timely when they appeared and are now important for their historical relevance. For many authors, it was their first major publication. Visions of Research in Music Education will publish facsimiles of each issue as it originally appeared. Each article will be a separate pdf file. Jason D. Vodicka has accepted my invitation to serve as guest editor for the reprint project and will compose a new editorial to introduce each volume. Chad Keilman is the production manager. Through the analysis of compositions and performances by artists in Japan and the United States, I reveal how Japanese musical forms like hōgaku and matsuri-bayashi have been melded with non-Japanese styles such as jazz. I also demonstrate how the art form first appeared as performed by large ensembles, but later developed into a wide variety of other modes of performance that included small ensembles and soloists. Additionally, I discuss the spread of wadaiko from Japan to the United States, examining the effect of interactions between artists in the two countries on the creation of repertoire; in this way, I reveal how a musical genre develops in an intercultural environment. -

This document intends to be a performance guide to Miki’s Sohmon III: for Soprano, Marimba and Piano (1988). The first chapter provides an introduction to the composer and his work. It also introduces methods of intercultural and artistic borrowing in the Japanese arts, and it defines the four basic principles of Japanese aesthetics. The second chapter focuses on the interpretation and pronunciation of Sohmon III’s song text. -

253 Music and Artistic Citizenship: In Search of a Swiss Identity CARLO PICCARDI (Lugano) Although, for obvious reasons, one cannot speak of a “Swiss music” in terms of a unified, homogeneous culture or style, this does not mean there are no observable constants within the variety of its manifestations and its development over time. More than individual elaborations, historical con- ditions have had the greatest influence in determining the aesthetic prin- ciples which have imposed themselves; general behaviour and interests have outweighed particular interests, and the way the country has de- fined itself as a distinct community in relation to its neighbouring nations. This essay draws upon well-known studies to examine music, art and cul- ture from historical, social, civil and political perspectives in an attempt to critically re-examine the question. It will be shown how a certain Swiss musical identity is constituted with regard to its functional role in the country’s interests, as an expression of a collective dimension, as a regu- lating organisation of its integration within society, and as a permanent and recognised dialogue with the institutions. The fact that certain char- acteristics recur both in situations of conservative withdrawal and in those of opening to new influences, leads us to speak of a shared value in the diversity of attitudes. About the fact that Switzerland has been the location of choice for travellers and refugees from all over the continent, someone has said that this country has more often welcomed the people who have found com- fort and refuge here than it has welcomed the messages they have brought with them. -

Vanhal (8.554341). Two recordings of Kliegel in Cologne, as well as with William Pleeth in London, whose last pupil music by Hummel have received Editorʼs Choice in the Gramophone he was to become. Aged only sixteen, he worked with composer Alfred magazine (2004/2008). His recording of the complete works for piano and Schnittke. B müssen wir sagen, weil dieses Hörfest bei den Zuhörern und in der Presse („Dieser gelungene Auftakt ruft ganz laut nach einer Wiederholung“) einen so großen Anklang gefunden hat. Aber genau das ist ja auch unsere Intention: Durch Beharrlichkeit nicht nur Interesse für die Neue Musik zu wecken, sondern möglichst sogar Begeisterung. So können wir vielleicht dem Wunsch der Ministerin näher kommen. Wir haben uns in unserer Begeisterung für dieses 2. Hörfest viel vorgenommen, wie Sie diesem Programmheft entnehmen können. Wir laden Sie nun herzlich ein zu einer Entdeckungsreise mit all ihren Unwegsamkeiten in das Reich der Neuen Musik. Die Fokussierung auf ein Leitthema soll Ihnen dabei eine Orientierung vermitteln. Im vergangenen Jahr war es „Der Klang des Wassers“; mit dem Thema „Klangfarben – Farbklänge“ wollen wir jetzt versuchen, die künstlerischen Aussagen verschiedener Werke zueinander in Beziehung zu setzen. -
