The Zapatista rebels have been notable for their excellent media management skills and their use of new technology to disseminate their message. This thesis will'study the rhetoric of this contemporary revolution-turned-social movement, by using cluster analysis. It explores the use of rhetoric of confrontation and rhetoric of peace to further the Zapatista cause, seeking to identify any changes in their message during the last ten years of the revolution. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS It is with my deepest appreciation that I thank Dr. Stacey Sowards, Chair of my committee for her tremendous guidance, support and encouragement throughout this process. '.................... 90 vii APPENDIX B: ZAPATISTA QUOTES: ORIGINAL SPANISH TEXT.......................... 95 REFERENCES........................................ 100 viii CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTORY CHAPTER Introduction to Topic On January 1, 1994, the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) formally declared war against Mexican president Carlos Salinas de Gortari and the Federal Government, demanding "work, land, housing, food, health, education, independence, freedom,'democracy, justice and peace" (Comandancia General del EZLN, 1994, translation mine). Before the Mexican Government could begin operations to crush the rebel forces, the Zapatista declaration of war had circled the globe via the Internet, and the word focused on Chiapas through the eyes of the countless journalists, activists, and international organizations that wrote the stories of this uprising in articles and emails, and who introduced Subcomandante Marcos, a new revolutionary icon and first spokesperson for the EZLN. Since the EZLN's formal declaration of war, the Mexican government, the Mexican people, and others all over the world have speculated as to the origins.of the 1 EZLN and the identities of the revolutionaries. Who are the masked women and men who call themselves Zapatistas? "The men and women of the EZLN, the faceless ones, the ones who walk in the night and who belong to the mountains, have sought words that other men and women could understand" (Harvey, 1998, p. 6). The EZLN has never given specifics about how their Army originated. When masked Zapatistas are asked their names, they give their Zapatista name, names adopted in the Lacandona jungle. When asked their age, they respond with the number of years of exploitation of, the indigenous people, land and resources of Chiapas by the ruling class, over 500 years (Garcia Marquez, 2001). The Zapatista message may come from the Comandancia General del EZLN, from the first and primary spokesperson.Subcomandante Marcos, or from the Comandante Susana, Comandante David, Comandante Tacho, or Comandante Esther, all leaders in the Zapatista Army who were a part of the Zapatista March to Mexico City, March 2001 (Ejercito Zapatista de Liberacion Nacional, 2001). Marcos explains why the Zapatista message should be delivered by so many voices: "So the one 2 who speaks is a more collective heart, not a single leader, or caudillo" (Harvey, 1998, p. 7). In the first hours of the new year, the Zapatista Army took control of the Chiapas towns of Altamirano, Chanal, Huixtan, Las Margaritas, Ocosingo, Oxchuc, and San Cristobal de las Casas, where tourists, both Mexican and foreign, were celebrating the beginning of a new year. The new-year celebrations were cut short by the occupation of the Zapatista Forces and the destabilization of the municipal governments.' Top politicians were arrested by the revolutionaries, rich and powerful landowners were kidnapped, police officers were disarmed, Mexican citizens and the international community were shocked by the news of this uprising. The violence shocked the Mexican government and military, as well as the public, and ushered in a multifaceted political crisis that over the course of the next several months brought into question not only the prospects for democracy and economic development, but also for continued political stability.

    Third World Quarterly, Vol 22, No 6, pp 1045–1061, 2001 Globalisation and resistance in post-cold war Mexico: difference, citizenship and biodiversity conflicts in Chiapas NEIL HARVEY ABSTRACT In the post-cold war era changes at the global, regional, national and local level are altering earlier ways of understanding and practising citizen- ship. In Mexico the decline of the state-guided national development project (1930s–70s) has been accompanied by the transformation of corporatist forms of political control. This article uses examples of recent biodiversity conflicts in the state of Chiapas to illustrate this process in terms of a struggle between competing models of ‘market citizenship’ and ‘pluri-ethnic citizenship’. By focusing on the actions and demands of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation and other indigenous organisations, the article highlights how resistance to globalisation in the Lacandon rainforest of Chiapas is related to struggles for collective rights and a more inclusive form of democracy in Mexico. This also raises important questions regarding the future shape of national identities and the scope of democratic rights around the world in the post-cold war era. In recent years a new type of conflict has emerged over control of the biological resources of the world. The rapid pace of corporate concentration in the agro- chemical and pharmaceutical industries has been accompanied by increasing competition for access to genetic materials found in plants, fungi and other living organisms. Since the areas of greatest biodiversity happen to be located in the tropical regions of Latin America, Asia and Africa, such areas are currently the sites of new struggles over the right to use biological resources and indigenous knowledge.

People who leave their lands and homes due to conflict, are currently living in appalling conditions and many displaced families are living together in subhuman conditions. In the majority of cases displaced people cannot cultivate their land, either because, the paramilitaries make it impossible for them, or there is insufficient space. This has led to greater poverty in the region and subjected such groups to greater exploitation. To escape from poverty and conflict, some parents have sold their daughters in hope of a better life. Every year about 3,000 young girls from Chiapas are trafficked to Mexico City and Cancun, with the majority of them being well below the age of consent (Menendez, 2001). This paper attempts to show the effect that agrarian conflict has had on the trafficking of women in relation to the internal displacement of people in Chiapas.

ABSTRACT This thesis project will argue that the participation of indigenous Mexicans in the Revolution of 1910 and the EZLN uprising of 1994 forced José Vasconcelos, Leopoldo Zea, and Enrique Dussel to reflect on the legacies of Mexico’s colonial past in order to propose how such peoples would form a part of modern Mexican society and identity. Vasconcelos proposed the idea of the cosmic race to encourage indigenous assimilation. Although Zea was a decolonial thinker, he too encouraged indigenous assimilation.

Collins Department of Political Science and International Affairs Kennesaw State University Kennesaw, GA 30144 e-mail: [email protected] Abstract This article examines the origins and outcomes of the indigenous-based Zapatista rebellion launched fifteen years ago in Chiapas, Mexico. The precursors responsible for the resistance movement are assessed, as well as the proximate events which convinced the indigenous communities to embrace a militarized approach. International relations conflict theory is plumbed for explanations of the conflict and for conflict resolution strategies relevant to this particular event. This study finds that the conflict in Chiapas was the consequence of two antecedent conditions – systematic human rights abuses and extreme material deprivation; and two proximate factors – NAFTA ratification and pending revisions to communal land laws.

Patten, Ph.D. Western Michigan University, 2017 This study examines the creation of a criminogenic policy, NAFTA, and its subsequent social harms that primarily impacted poor rural farmers and indigenous people in Mexico. Previous research into state-corporate crime has focused on crimes committed by one state and one corporation, while little research has investigated the commission of crimes by more than one state operating in collusion.
