ANNUAL REPORT 2014 MISSION STATEMENT

Yaddo’s mission is to further the creative process by providing an opportunity for artists to work without interruption in a supportive environment. Chosen on a competitive basis by panels of widely recognized artists, guests work in both traditional and nontraditional media. They include emerging and well-known artists, reflecting a broad range of contemporary styles and creative perspectives. They are welcomed to Yaddo without regard for their financial circumstances.

YADDO WELCOMED 226 extraordinary artists in 2014. As always, it was an international group that hailed from many parts of the globe, from China to the Czech Republic, with a particularly strong contingent from Latin America. Our ten collaborative teams, some working in our new Greenhouse Studios, exemplified Yaddo’s commitment to interdisciplinary practices. We pushed in other new directions, as well, inviting not only people working on the boundaries between art forms, but between art and science, welcoming a physicist, several physicians, computer animators, and a mathematician.

Over 250 friends of Yaddo gathered at the Hotel Edison Ballroom in Midtown Manhattan on May 14 for our annual New York City Benefit, where presented her longtime friend with the inaugural Yaddo Artist Medal. Roth, who had his first residency at Yaddo in 1964, and returned six times over the next eight years, dedicated his novel The Breast to Yaddo and its then Executive Director 1 2 Elizabeth Ames as “the best friends a writer could have.” The event also served as an occasion to honor the New York Racing Association, Inc., which operates our closest neighboring institution, the historic Saratoga Race Course. Charles and Candace Wait co-chaired the benefit, which raised $275,000 to help fund the residency program. 3 4

12 YADDO ANNUAL REPORT 2014 SUMMER BENEFIT

Guests at our 2014 Summer Benefit were entertained by one of America’s most accomplished and acclaimed fiction writers, Jayne Anne Phillips, who spoke about her book Quiet Dell, a work of historical fiction based on a series of murders that took place in Depression-era West 1 2 . The book was partially written at Yaddo.

The sold-out event was a huge success, raising $137,709. Thanks to the generosity of the Capital Region community and the hard work of the members of the volunteer committees, Yaddo was able to devote more than 90 percent of the proceeds from the benefit directly to the artist residency program.
