Th e Southbank Residents Choir founder joins Group (SRG) is attempting to nullify growing concerns within the community surrounding Southbank Rotary serviced apartments.

Th e group has created a sub-committee to investigate what the issues are and, more importantly, how to fi x them. Th e idea of a separate committee dedicated to the serviced apartment issue was put to SRG members in August and was strongly endorsed. Th e focus of the new group will be to investigate exactly what the problems are and what the legalities are. It will then be clearer to work out what action can be taken against the practice of using residential apartments for short-term stays. Th e SRG meeting was told that the committee would look at the “pseudo-hotel” issue objectively, putting aside emotion. Th e group will also have members from neighbouring regions with similar serviced apartment concerns, such as Docklands and the CBD. Th e committee had its fi rst tentative meeting during September. Th e discussion included a general overview of serviced apartments, what the existing problems were and if any members had already made any contact with local or state governments in regard to the issue. Hidden in the centre of Southbank is the Victoria Police Mounted Branch. Mounted police patrol our streets and support operational policing and public order management. Sen-Constable Matthew Astill from the Mounted Branch describes it as Southbank’s hidden jewel. Th e “majestic” building is a stable for on-duty police horses. Th e building will celebrate its 100th birthday next year. Horses were a primary transport for police offi cers up until the transition to motorised transport in the early 20th century.
