AUSTRALIAN EPHEMERA COLLECTION FINDING AID BARRY HUMPHRIES PERFORMING ARTS PROGRAMS AND EPHEMERA (PROMPT) PRINTED AUSTRALIANA JANUARY 2015 Barry Humphries was born in Melbourne on the 17th of February 1934. He is a multi-talented actor, satirist, artist and author. He began his stage career in 1952 in Call Me Madman. As actor he has invented many satiric Australian characters such as Sandy Stone, Lance Boyle, Debbie Thwaite, Neil Singleton and Barry (‘Bazza’) McKenzie - but his most famous creations are Dame Edna Everage who debuted in 1955 and Sir Leslie (‘Les’) Colin Patterson in 1974. Dame Edna, Sir Les and Bazza between them have made several sound recordings, written books and appeared in films and television and have been the subject of exhibitions. Since the 1960s Humphries’ career has alternated between England, Australia and the United States of America with his material becoming more international. Barry Humphries’ autobiography More Please (London; New York : Viking, 1992) won him the J.R. Ackerley Prize in 1993. He has won various awards for theatre, comedy and as a television personality. In 1994 he was accorded an honorary doctorate from Griffith University, Queensland and in 2003 received an Honorary Doctorate of Law from the University of Melbourne. He was awarded an Order of Australia in 1982; a Centenary Medal in 2001 for “service to Australian society through acting and writing”; and made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire for "services to entertainment" in 2007 (Queen's Birthday Honours, UK List). Humphries was named 2012 Australian of the Year in the UK. The Barry Humphries PROMPT collection includes programs, ephemera and newspaper cuttings which document Barry Humphries and his alter egos on stage in Australia and overseas from the beginning of his career in the 1950s into the 21st Century. -

Many of Australia’s greatest radio serials were produced during the 1940s. Among those listed in this guide are the Sunday night one-hour plays - The Lux Radio Theatre and The Macquarie Radio Theatre (becoming the Caltex Theatre after 1947); the many Jack Davey Shows, and The Bob Dyer Show; the Colgate Palmolive variety extravaganzas, headed by Calling the Stars, The Youth Show and McCackie Mansion, which starred the outrageously funny Mo (Roy Rene). Fine drama programs produced in Sydney in the 1940s included The Library of the Air and Max Afford's serial Hagen's Circus. Among the comedy programs listed from this decade are the George Wallace Shows, and Mrs 'Obbs with its hilariously garbled language. -

Publicity photo: the housewife diva, 3 July 1965 (Alamy) i Abstract The Australian soprano Marie Collier (1927-1971) is generally remembered for two things: for her performance of the title role in Puccini’s Tosca, especially when she replaced the controversial singer Maria Callas at late notice in 1965; and her tragic death in a fall from a window at the age of forty-four. The focus on Tosca, and the mythology that has grown around the manner of her death, have obscured Collier’s considerable achievements. She sang traditional repertoire with great success in the major opera houses of Europe, North and South America and Australia, and became celebrated for her pioneering performances of twentieth-century works now regularly performed alongside the traditional canon. Collier’s experiences reveal much about post-World War II Australian identity and cultural values, about the ways in which the making of opera changed throughout the world in the 1950s and 1960s, and how women negotiated their changing status and prospects through that period. She exercised her profession in an era when the opera industry became globalised, creating and controlling an image of herself as the ‘housewife-diva’, maintaining her identity as an Australian artist on the international scene, and developing a successful career at the highest level of her artform while creating a fulfilling home life. This study considers the circumstances and mythology of Marie Collier’s death, but more importantly shows her as a woman of the mid-twentieth century navigating the professional and personal spheres to achieve her vision of a life that included art, work and family. -
Remembering Edouard Borovansky and His Company 1939–1959
REMEMBERING EDOUARD BOROVANSKY AND HIS COMPANY 1939–1959 Marie Ada Couper Submitted in total fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2018 School of Culture and Communication The University of Melbourne 1 ABSTRACT This project sets out to establish that Edouard Borovansky, an ex-Ballets Russes danseur/ teacher/choreographer/producer, was ‘the father of Australian ballet’. With the backing of J. C. Williamson’s Theatres Limited, he created and maintained a professional ballet company which performed in commercial theatre for almost twenty years. This was a business arrangement, and he received no revenue from either government or private sources. The longevity of the Borovansky Australian Ballet company, under the direction of one person, was a remarkable achievement that has never been officially recognised. The principal intention of this undertaking is to define Borovansky’s proper place in the theatrical history of Australia. Although technically not the first Australian professional ballet company, the Borovansky Australian Ballet outlasted all its rivals until its transformation into the Australian Ballet in the early 1960s, with Borovansky remaining the sole person in charge until his death in 1959. In Australian theatre the 1930s was dominated by variety shows and musical comedies, which had replaced the pantomimes of the 19th century although the annual Christmas pantomime remained on the calendar for many years. Cinemas (referred to as ‘picture theatres’) had all but replaced live theatre as mass entertainment. The extremely rare event of a ballet performance was considered an exotic art reserved for the upper classes. ‘Culture’ was a word dismissed by many Australians as undefinable and generally unattainable because of our colonial heritage, which had long been the focus of English attitudes. -

He was the first general manager of the Australian Chamber Orchestra and for many years has maintained a close association with the orchestra. Prior to that he was commercial manager of the Australian Opera. More recently he was general manager of the Song Company until 2009. He originally trained as an accountant with Price Waterhouse, where he worked in Australia and overseas until his passion for music seduced him into the professional music scene. Since that time, in addition to his executive appointments, he has worked as director or consultant to many arts organisations including the Australian Ballet, Melbourne Theatre Company, Lyric Opera of Queensland, Musica Viva, Australian Brandenburg Orchestra and the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust. He has been a leader in establishing philanthropy, corporate sponsor- ship and strategic planning in the arts in Australia, publishing several books in this field, notably 101 Good Ideas for Assisting the Arts. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2008 for his services to the arts. -

MEDIA RELEASE August 20, 2013 SEX, GOD & THE WARDROBE - A PANEL DISCUSSION OF FREUD’S LAST SESSION “Things are only simple when you choose not to examine them” – Freud’s Last Session Following the performance of the hit play Freud’s Last Session on Sunday September 1 at 3pm, the audience is invited to stay and hear Dr Rachael Kohn, Peter FitzSimons, Dr Tanveer Ahmed and Roy Williams discuss God, sex and the other simple things of life. Freud’s Last Session centres on legendary psychoanalyst Dr Sigmund Freud (played by Henri Szeps), who invites a young, little-known professor, C.S. Lewis (Douglas Hansell), to his home in London. Lewis, expecting to be hauled over the carpet for satirizing Freud in a recent book, soon realizes Freud has a much more significant agenda. On the day England enters World War II (3 September 1939), Freud and Lewis clash on the existence of God, love, sex and the meaning of life – only a few weeks before Freud chooses to take his own. The Panel Discussion will be moderated by Dr Rachael Kohn, producer and presenter of ABC Radio National’s The Spirit of Things, and the panelists will be: • Peter FitzSimons – journalist, author and atheist • Dr Tanveer Ahmed – psychiatrist and author • Roy Williams – lawyer and author of books including In God They Trust?, a study of the religious beliefs of Australia’s Prime Ministers since 1901. Inspired by Dr Armand S.
