AUGUST 2021 NEWSLETTER FUNDED BY THE NEW YORK CITY DEPARTMENT FOR THE AGING AND YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS FROM THE DIRECTOR Flexibility and choice are key to the next phase of reopening. Members can choose to pick up their meals or eat at the Center. And, as we add more on-site activities, members can elect to return in person or continue with virtual programming. For August, we have planned a series of concerts and lectures in the Y’s theater, allowing more people to attend and still remain in compliance with social distancing rules. We also plan to have a pre- Rosh Hashanah luncheon to welcome in the Jewish New Year. We’ll add more on-site activities in September and beyond. For those of you who are not ready to return to the Center, we will continue to offer classes and special events on-line. And, our DOROT intergenerational program continues on-line for the first three weeks in August. We expect that on-line programming will remain a permanent part of our Center. We continue to offer daily roundtrip transportation to the Y. If you need transportation, please leave a message at (718) 548-8200 x225 the day before you wish to be picked up. You’ll receive a confirmation call in the morning when we plan our route sheets for the day. Masks are required in our van and social distancing rules apply. Effective August 16, the City will require proof of vaccination or weekly testing for all Center staff and volunteers. While the vast majority of our staff are already vaccinated, this mandate provides an additional level of formalized protection for our members. Your safety continues to be our first priority. While New Beginnings, like all Older Adult Centers in NYC, is not authorized to require vaccination for in-person attendance, we strongly encourage you to get vaccinated for your own health and safety as well as for the health and safety of everyone around you in our community. Vaccinations are now readily available at walk-up sites, NYC mobile vans and buses, and other locations throughout the city. You can even schedule a vaccination at home with your vaccine of choice (Pfizer, Moderna or Johnson & Johnson). In the meantime, all Older Adult Center participants are required by the Department of Health to wear masks and practice social distancing. Of course, guidelines are continuously changing. We will disseminate all new information, announcements and updates as we receive them from health authorities. I am looking forward to seeing everyone in person.
