BUSINESS MAJOR ALYSSA SMITH GAINS REAL LIFE EXPERIENCE THROUGH FFA

BY HANNAH KANIK (Courtesy of Alyssa Smith) TWITTER @HANNAH_KANIK Students of the University of Oregon’s business school learn about how to lead effectively in the business world through lectures and classroom activities. However, sophomore business major Alyssa Smith is already leading in the business world. Smith spends her summers and weekends gaining real-world experience running conferences for the National Future Farmers of America organization, or FFA — an established club focused on agriculture and leadership. Smith is working as a convention facilitator for the National FFA Organization. In high school, she was an FFA state officer in Oregon from 2015 to 2016. The National FFA organization is “an intra- curricular student organization for those interested in agriculture and leadership,” according to its website. The organization has over 700,000 members nationwide, and its goal is to prepare high school students for professional success. The organization changed its name in 1988 from “Future Farmers of America” to “The National FFA Organization” because not every student in the organization is going to be a farmer, Smith said. Many students go on to work in the business side of agricultural companies, while some pursue farming or technical occupations. Students get involved in FFA by taking an agriculture class in high school, where the option to join FFA is presented. The teacher of the agriculture class connects them to the leadership conventions and more broad involvement in the national FFA organization. Smith got involved in FFA during her first year of high school at Elkton Charter School when she took the class “Introduction to Agriculture.” Within the course, students were introduced to FFA and able to join the statewide competitions and attend conventions. The teacher of the class encouraged Smith to participate in a job interview competition, which is a career development event within FFA. Smith won the competition as a first-year. “I’m really competitive, so doing the job interview — and doing well — motivated me to get more involved,” Smith said. and make a difference,” Smith said. “It’s very high as conference facilitator, she has to miss school Smith became the treasurer for the National energy. MONDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2017 | EMERALD | PAGE 3 1. Take Care of Yourself All I want First and foremost, it’s important to remember that your mental and physical health need to be prioritized in such a stressful time. Eating healthy meals regularly, getting suffi cient amounts of sleep and keeping up on personal hygiene are all keys to ensuring your brain can function at it’s best. We’re not saying you have to go to the spa for Xmas ... every day, but keeping your health up will help your test scores stay up too.

Utilize University Opportunities The University may be the exact place you’re scared to go to, but there are tons of opportunities and spaces for you to destress or better prepare yourself for your fi nals on campus. Pay attention to the billboards for study sessions, stop by the Duck Nest for some hot tea or a break from studying. They also offer Peer Wellness Advocates who can help mellow you out or coach you through a particularly hard day, and also can often point you in the right direction for additional help. 4. Create a Study Schedule Whether you’re an obsessive planner-lover or someone who forgets to eat breakfast every day, using a strict study schedule during fi nals week in your free time will help avoid procrastination and a mental overload. Keep in mind your full spectrum of responsibilities in making it. Do you have work that day? How much time will you realistically have to divvy up? Be sure to follow it closely, but provide yourself with plenty of breaks and outlets to de-stress in between as well. 5. Don’t Be Afraid to Take a Break Studying is crucial and everyone wants to be appropriately prepared for their fi nals, but it won’t be any use to you if you’re stretched too thin and your mental health takes a vacation. Taking breaks, enjoying leisurely activities and having a social life during fi nals week is nothing to be ashamed of and can actually help when it comes to sticking your nose in the book. Reward yourself for a good hour of studying, eat some snacks while you read and give yourself half an hour of Netfl ix after fi nishing a chapter — you’ll be okay!

Winter break is quickly approaching, and most of us are starting to think about being away from The Eug for a month or more. That seems like a long time, I know. Especially when half of your life and half of your belongings are now here, stored in your house or apartment.
