SEASSI Khmer Beginning Syllabus Languages and Cultures of Asia 307/008 is a year-long equivalent (two-semester) sequence designed to bring students up to “survival level” in standard spoken and written Khmer. Class will mostly consist of activities in which Khmer must be used to accomplish specific tasks relevant to the topical matter of the Unit, thus giving practical experience in using and hearing Khmer. There will also be lectures (in English) on various cultural and grammatical issues in Khmer, with a focus on how these issues relate to English and American culture). There will be lectures on the writing system and on common pronunciation problems as well. There will also be lots of “focused listening” practice, games, and songs. A playful and creative approach will be encouraged in the learning and practice of all four skills (speaking,Property listening, reading and writing) in Khmer, as well as Khmer culture. CORUSE REQUIREMENTS: Students will be evaluated according to the following criteria: 1. Overall Class Participation: 20% 2. Completion of homework/assignments: 30% 3. Quizzes: 20% 4. Mid-term exam (written and oral): 10% 5. Final exam (written and oral): 10% 6. Individual/group project: 10% NOTE: 1. Participation: Participation will be graded based on the following criteria: a. 4-5 well-prepared; engage to and fully participate in the classroom activities b. 2-3 present, but relatively passive of c. 1 significantly late (30 minutes after the class begins) or considerably disturb the class including using your phones. The use of phones, laptops and other gadgets in the classroom is limited to instruction or learning purposes. -

Box 789, 0980, Manila, Philippines FOREWORD his publication was prepared in conjunction with an Asian Development Bank (ADB) regional technical assistance (RETA) project on Capacity Building for Indigenous Peoples/ T Ethnic Minority Issues and Poverty Reduction (RETA 5953), covering four developing member countries (DMCs) in the region, namely, Cambodia, Indonesia, Philippines, and Viet Nam. The project is aimed at strengthening national capacities to combat poverty and at improving the quality of ADB’s interventions as they affect indigenous peoples. The project was coordinated and supervised by Dr. Indira Simbolon, Social Development Specialist and Focal Point for Indigenous Peoples, ADB. The project was undertaken by a team headed by the author, Mr. Roger Plant, and composed of consultants from the four participating DMCs. Provincial and national workshops, as well as extensive fieldwork and consultations with high-level government representatives, nongovernment organizations (NGOs), and indigenous peoples themselves, provided the basis for poverty assessment as well as an examination of the law and policy framework and other issues relating to indigenous peoples. Country reports containing the principal findings of the project were presented at a regional workshop held in Manila on 25–26 October 2001, which was attended by representatives from the four participating DMCs, NGOs, ADB, and other finance institutions. -

(0748) 22872 Email: [email protected] Abstract: This research aims at explaining the dominance of Minang Dialect in Kerinci Society, the factors that influence the dominance of Minang Dialect in Kerinci society and the way to maintain Kerinci language from the influence of Minang language. This is a descriptive research because it described data and characteristics about the phenomenon being studied. The data was gotten through observation. Besides, the researcher also did library research and compared to the theory used to answer the problems in this research. From the data conducted, it can be seen that the dominance of Minang dialects in Kerinci society can be found in the market and in the restaurants. It means that Kerinci language is influenced by Minang language. This is due to Kerinci and Minang are neighbors. Besides, Minang people who stay in Kerinci always use Minang language especially in doing selling and buying transaction and this gives influence to the use of Kerinci language. Thus, to maintain Kerinci language, there are some steps that can be done such as standardization of Kerinci language, so that people know which one is Kerinci language and which one is not. Besides, Kerinci language dictionary should be available and people have to use the original language of Kerinci instead of Minang language in daily communication. -

COLLINS MALAY DIALECT RESEARCH IN MALAYSIA: THE ISSUE OF PERSPECTIVE1 Introduction When European travellers and adventurers began to explore the coasts and islands of Southeast Asia almost five hundred years ago, they found Malay spoken in many of the ports and entrepots of the region. Carving out a Space for Alternative Voices through Performing Arts in Contemporary Cambodian Tourism 77 Carving out a Space for Alternative Voices through Performing Arts in Contemporary Cambodian Tourism: Transformation, Transgression and Cambodia’s first gay classical dance company Saori HAGAI * Abstract This paper explores the potential for the global phenomenon of tourism to become a platform for performing art practitioners, dancers and artists to carve out a space for alternative voices through their performances and perhaps thereby to stimulate social transformation and even encourage evolutionary social transgression in Cambodia. Drawing on the post-colonial discourses of Geertz(1980)and Vickers(1989), this paper adopts tourism as a cultural arena which contributes to the deconstruction of the landscape of a country through the exposure to the wider global gaze. This is achieved by taking the case study of Prumsodun Ok & NATYARASA in its calculated promotion of social transgression in the classical arts. Prumsodun Ok & NATYARASA is the Cambodia’s first gay classical dance company(hereafter the Company)established in 2015, and sets a manifestation of their continuing commitment to social transformation through artistic dialogue both inside and outside of Cambodia. Also, youʼll find the delicious Khmer Chicken Curry recipe from the Haven cookbook at the end of this article, to cook and enjoy at home. To me, the Cambodian cuisine is like heaven on earth. Flavorful, well- rounded and never too spicy. The Khmer are simply gifted at conjuring up delicious dishes on the plates. Itʼs a pity that there are not more Cambodian restaurants in this part of the world. For a Cambodia lover like me, the Thai or Vietnamese around the corner is in its own way very good, but itʼs just not the same. So thereʼs only one thing that can be done: cook it yourself and bring the flavor fireworks of the Cambodian cuisine to the domestic stove! HAVEN – Cooking for a cause Due to the lack of experience in the preparation of Cambodian food, a suitable recipe is required. Preferably with a “built-in” guarantee to make sure the result doesnʼt end up in the garbage bin.
