How wonderful it is to be able to enjoy the fall season again here in the heartland of God’s Promised Land. The trees and plants begin to prepare for the harsher times of our winters and turn from the greens of summer to the brilliant colors of fall. It is a great and marvelous work that God has created. He has provided for us a great assortment of plants that all contribute to the environment we need for our physical existence. He has also provided for us a great and marvelous work which helps to sustain our spiritual existence. We call that His church. Each and every aspect of it is precious and is designed for our benefit as we journey on our path back to Him. Oh, what love He always shows forth to us. Now, in the midst of this beauty, has come much turmoil and chaos as the peoples of earth battle with each other to proclaim that their viewpoints are more correct than God’s viewpoints. Some are trying to seek power. Some are trying to convince us that God doesn’t exist. Some are trying to lead men astray. Some believe that the ways of men will save us. Some are trying to distract us from the path God has prepared and so wonderfully provided for us. This battle is not new. It has been going on for centuries. It is good to reflect upon the words found in Section 2, verse 1–2a of the Doctrine and Covenants: “The works, and the designs, and the purposes of God, cannot be frustrated, neither can they come to naught, for God doth not walk in crooked paths; neither doth he turn to the right hand nor to the left; neither doth he vary from that which he hath said; therefore his paths are straight and his course is one eternal round. Remember, remember, that it is not the work of God that is frustrated, but the work of men.” I am assured that God is still working with us as long as we continue to put ourselves in His care. It is exciting to consider that there are still some aspects of our walk in this church that are yet to come forth, such as a temple, the return of Jesus Christ, the millennial reign, opportunities to walk and talk again with those who have gone before us, and visits with the peoples of Enoch’s day. So, as you walk around outside or take a moment to gaze out into the beauty of the season, keep in mind that God is with us. He is ready to help us through all of our joys and all of our sorrows. He is ready to guide us down our path. He has given us all that we need. We just need to allow Him to be a part of our life and surrender to Him. “By these things we know that there is a God in heaven who is infinite and eternal…that he should be the only being whom they should worship” (D&C Section 17:4a,b). May we be blessed as we prepare to see God in action.

The following is a brief overview of the Church’s financial condition as of September 30th, 2020. Our total Reserve Fund from all accounts has increased by $142,187 over the same time last year. The total reserves as of September 30th, 2020, are $385,245. We are pleased with the increase of our reserve funds and believe the church is in a stable financial condition. Our net income for the General Fund has moved from a negative $45,859 at the end of September 2019 to a positive +$60,689 as of September 30th, 2020. However, August 2020 and September 2020 income have not kept pace with expenses, with August being a negative $1,699 and September being a negative $4,051. We would ask the membership to consider their tithing contributions for October through the end of the year, so we can change this trend. The church’s income through September 2020 is down $3,499 (1%) compared to the prior year and our expenses through September 2020 were down $110,047 (32%) compared to the prior year. As you can see, our focus over the last year has been on controlling expenses while at the same time continuing to support the church’s mission of spreading the Gospel to all who will listen and the building of God’s Kingdom here upon the earth. May God bless our endeavors.

The faithful saints in Woodbine, Iowa, celebrate the baptism of their family. Mike and Judy Alvis’s twin daughters, Vicki and Alesha married and introduced their husbands to the Remnant Church. Below is the testimony of Vicki’s husband, Franklin Stamm, and their son, Nolan.

Guthrie Grove has always been a special place for our family. My wife, Vicki, and her family went there from the time she was a young girl and had so many memorable times. When the Remnant Church started having an Iowa Reunion, we knew we wanted to attend and make it our family vacation. The first year we went, Vicki was pregnant, and again, we knew that was going to be our family vacation each year with our little boy. Over the years, we went whenever we could, with some years being easier than others. Every time we did have a chance to attend the Iowa Reunion, it was a good experience. I enjoyed helping in the kitchen and working with the various members of the church and priesthood. Our son, Nolan, enjoyed helping in the kitchen and fortifying bonds with his yearly church friends. Attending the Guthrie Grove reunions led me and Nolan to our baptisms. We knew we wanted to be baptized at Guthrie Grove and we knew that we wanted to be baptized together. It was time. So, in the early spring of 2019, we started meeting with Gary Argotsinger one to two times per week for baptismal classes. Learning the church history was very interesting for me and Nolan as we really enjoy history. Especially interesting was learning about . When Joseph found himself in a quandary about which church to join, he took his question to the Lord and asked which church to choose. The Lord showed Joseph the way just like he was showing our family the way he would have us to go. In May of 2019, myself, Nolan, and my brother-in-law, Mark Baxter, were baptized into the Remnant Church by Patriarch Gary Argotsinger. It was a wonderful day for us and our entire extended family. We were then confirmed in July of 2019 at the Remnant Church in Woodbine, Iowa, by Gary Argotsinger and Gary Seda. Again, another awesome day for the entire family. Nolan and I are pleased and proud to be members. It was a long time coming for my wife and our family, but in the end, we are now members of this great church and church family. My wife’s father, Mike Alvis, was also led to the church through his wife, Judy’s, faith. My wife Vicki has always clung to that testimony and God saw fit to bless us as a family to bring us all together in his church. A scripture that is one of my wife’s favorites sums up this experience, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11 NIV).

There is even more to celebrate! God is working with even more of the family at the same time. Below is the testimony of Alesha and her husband, Mark Baxter.

Alesha Baxter (Alvis) shares her testimony…I have been a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (and now, the Remnant Church) since I was eight and always dreamed that one day the man I would marry would also have the desire to become a member. Mark and I grew up together in Woodbine, Iowa, so he was familiar with my hometown church. While dating, engaged, and in our early years of marriage, Mark happily attended church with me. Our daughter, Daphne, was born in March of 2016, and her blessing took place in May of 2016 by Patriarch Gary Argotsinger and Seventy Ted Webb. Alesha’s husband, Mark shares his testimony…While leaving the Guthrie Grove Campgrounds in the summer of 2018, we were talking about how much fun we had at the reunion, and how we missed it when it was time to leave the grounds. During our conversation, Alesha asked me if I had ever considered becoming a member of the church. I actually had thought about it, especially after Daphne was blessed as an infant. I knew that it meant a lot to Alesha that we be part of the church as a family. Growing up in Woodbine, I knew many friends, including Alesha and Victoria, who attended the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Personally, I grew up as a member of the Presbyterian Church. It was my mom’s church. I attended off and on when I was younger, but did not have the same connection to the Presbyterian church that Alesha had to her church. I was ready to make that commitment for our family and told her that I would like to learn more about the church. We began meeting with Gary Argotsinger as a small group, including Frank Stamm and his son, Nolan, and myself, in the early spring of 2019. The classes with Gary were fascinating and educational. I had grown up knowing of the church, but I had no idea about its history and foundation. I learned so much in a short time that made my decision even more confirmed. I was excited to share what I had learned with Alesha when I returned home, and she was excited to listen. I knew that I had made the right decision to become a member. The whole experience has brought Alesha, Daphne, and me closer together as a family, and I am blessed to be part of something that is deeply rooted in its history and commitment to Christ. I look forward to many happy years as a member of this church with my wife and our daughter. Mark Baxter was baptized into the Remnant Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in June of 2019, and his baptism into the church was confirmed in July 2019. Mark and Alesha’s desire is for Daphne to become a member of the church with them when she turns eight years old. Editor’s Note: Vicki and Alesha’s maternal grandparents and also great-grandparents were also members of the church.
