Salukis’ NFL Tradition Walt Frazier — The Rest of the Story ç Southern Illinois has had 40 alumni play in the NFL. Most people know that Southern’s most famous basketball alum ç RB Brandon Jacobs, two-time Super Bowl Champion with New York is Walt Frazier (1964-67). What they don’t know is the story of how the Giants Atlanta native ended up in Carbondale. ç QB Jim Hart, four-time Pro Bowl selection who threw for 34,665 Basketball was Frazier’s second-best sport in high school. He career yards with St. Louis Cardinals. Later served as AD for SIU. was offered a scholarship to play quarterback at Georgia Tech, but he ç LB Bart Scott, 11-year NFL pro with Baltimore Ravens and New York didn’t want to play football. Frazier went on a recruiting visit to SIU in Jets 1963 and met with AD Donald Boydston, who was progressive about ç OL Carl Mauck, 13-year NFL pro and long-time NFL assistant recruiting minorities during a time when southern schools rarely recruited them. According to Boydston, Frazier didn’t say one word Famous non-football SIU alums the whole trip, but called shortly after he took the train back to Atlanta ç Kenny Troutt, founder of Excel, owner of Winstar Farms and 2018 to say he was enrolling at SIU. Triple Crown winner Justify Frazier was dismissed from the team for academic issues after ç NBA star Walt Frazier his sophomore year. He went back to Atlanta and got a job doing ç MLB All-Stars Dave Stieb and Steve Finley manual labor. Frazier called in August of 1965 and asked if he could ç Curt Jones, founder of Dippin’ Dots come back.
