The 2016 Tiger football squad will begin its 11th season of existence having gone 77-39 in its opening decade of play. That was done following a 1-10 opening season that fielded an inaugural team that was void of any seniors. Since then the Fishers HS football squad has won 3 HCC Championships, 2 IHSAA Sectional Championships, and the 2010 5A State Championship while producing a 76-28 record in the past 9 years. However, the last HCC Championship was in 2013 and the most recent Sectional Championship was 2012. The Tigers are hungry to bring a championship back to Fishers. Last year’s Tiger squad finished 7-4, with all four losses coming to Top 10 6A programs: Hamilton Southeastern (39-33), Avon (36-14), Cathedral (35-6), and Carmel (28-7). The Tigers did avenge their loss to HSE with a 38-22 Sectional victory before losing in the Sectional Championship game to Carmel. Gone from that team are some outstanding players who will be difficult to replace. Jeremy Chinn (Southern Illinois University - DB) led the Tigers in rushing, interceptions, and scoring. Two of his interceptions were returned for TDs as well as a punt return. Another 3-year starter gone from the Tigers is Titus Martin (Colgate - OG). Martin finished his career as the record holder for Most Career Pancake Blocks. Also gone are QB Zach Eaton (All HCC), TB Jermaine Huddleston (Anderson U.) DE Shawn Taylor (Dupage JC), WR Keyshawn Burrell, WR Kade Orris, Center Chase Bowser, LB Trent Nielson, DB Mike Folta, LB Zeke Dunnuck, OG Gavin Laffoon, DB Colton Thomas, QB Brent Hays (Trine U.), and DT Alex Butterfield. The Tigers return 12 starters from that 2015 team including 5 on the offensive side. There will be plenty of size up front as the Tigers return starting linemen Charlie Bernhardt (6’6” 250, OT, Sr.) and Luke Martin (6’4” 305, Jr.) who will likely move from RT to RG. Other offensive linemen who saw significant playing time last year and are likely to be in the starting line-up include Eric Fahrnkopf (6’5” 340, OG, Sr.), and Seth Rogers (6’4” 230, OT, Sr.). Adam Hochstedler (5’10” 230, Sr.) also figures to move into the Center spot and sophomore Andrew Voskuhl (6’1” 310) will provide some depth at the OG and Center positions. The Tigers return all of their TEs including starter Angelo Howze (6’2” 230, Sr.) who caught 9 passes for 141 yards. Several other TEs will see action in various personnel groupings including Luke Albright (6’4” 210, Jr.), Kaleb Clark (6’0” 195, Sr.), Michael Johnson (6’5” 215), and Bryce Gee (6’3” 205). The TB position will also be deep with part-time starter Trevor Newman (5’11” 175, Sr.) Returning. Newman rushed for 561 yards on 106 carries last year. Michael Noble (5’10” 175, Jr.), also returns who added 141 yards rushing on 33 attempts. New additions who will certainly see time in the backfield include Max Shores (6’0” 170, Sr.) who returns from a knee injury suffered in lacrosse that kept him out last year, Jay Dawson II (5’10” 175, Sr.), and sophomore HL Lewis (5’10” 165). At WR, DeVonte Adams (6’0” 185, Sr.) is the most experienced receiver. He earned a starting position in the Tiger 3-WR personnel group last year and caught 25 passes for 294 yards, 3rd most on the team. Will Syrus (6’3” 175, Jr.) also returns after catching 10 passes for 184 yards last year as a sophomore. Others will most certainly catch their share of passes include Brian Kantner (5’10” 165, Sr.), Luke Reiter (5’9” 155, Sr.) and Nathan Humphrey (6’0” 160, Sr.). Also expect defensive standout RJ Potts to be more involved in the offense at the WR position after catching 4 passes last year. Like most of the other positions, there will be competition for playing time at the QB position. The Tigers graduated their top 2 QBs from last year, so returning QBs have not had much opportunity to play varsity football. However, Joel Smyth (6’0” 175, Sr.), and Matt Wolff (6’0” 190, Jr.) split time on an undefeated JV team last year so both are capable athletes and have shown an ability to lead successfully. Sophomore Jon Vore (6’0” 170) will be waiting in the wings and pushing the upperclassmen and waiting for his opportunity as well. Defensively, the Tigers return 5 starters including 3-year starter RJ Potts (6’3” 205, Sr.). RJ started at Safety as a freshman and sophomore and was eventually moved to CB as a junior. Potts will return to one of the safety positions this year in the Tigers’ new 4-2 scheme. Potts led the team in tackles as a freshmen and interceptions as a sophomore and has been named to the IFCA Jr. All-State Team each of the past 2 years. Joining him in the secondary is returning starter and All HCC DB Jalen Moss (6’0” 185, Sr.) who finished 2nd in Total Tackles last year with 67 ½ Tackles in 2015 and had 2 picks. Others who are likely to see action in the secondary include Jake Willard (6’0” 180), who started 1 game in 2015 and collected 1 with a 70 yard return, Michael Noble, Bryce Reardon (5’10” 165, Jr.), Michael Prewitt (6’0” 165, Jr.) and DeVonte Adams. Two LBs return who saw lots of action last year. Brendan Toungate (6’1” 185, Sr.) returns as a starter and Michael Nettleton (6’0” 195, Jr.) played significantly in a back-up role in 2015 collecting 23 Total Tackles. Toungate was 4th on the team in Total Tackles recording 48 ½ total tackles. Pushing them will be young LBs Isaiah Dunnuck (6’3” 195, Jr.), Seth Sontich (5’9” 180, Jr.) and Emmanuel Davis (6’1” 180, So.). The defensive line could be the strength of the defense with returning starter and IFCA Junior All-State DE Jake Winkle (6’2” 215, Sr.) back in the line-up after recording 10 sacks in 2015. Also expect Angelo Howze and Eli Kipp (6’2” 210, Sr.) to make some plays at DE. Inside for the Fishers 4-down front, Jeff Inman (6’2” 235, Sr.) returns as a starter and Tyler Denson (5’11” 210, Sr.) will bring some experience to defense as well. Inman was 2nd on the team in Sacks (4) and Tackles For Loss (9). Luke Martin will share time from the offense to bring some size and strength to the defensive front. Also look for Nick Douglas (6’0” 225, Jr.), Logan Weaver (6’0” 210, Sr.), and Luke Thomas (6’1” 215, Jr.) to add depth. The kicking game should be a strength with both kickers returning for the Tigers. Ben Norton (6’1” 165, Jr.) will handle kicking duties after hitting 36 of 39 PATs and 6 of 8 FGs as a sophomore. Taylor Soper (6’0” 180, Sr.) was an IFCA Junior All-State selection last year after averaging 37.0 yards per punt. The season will certainly be challenging with the majority of the teams on the schedule expected to be Top 10 ranked in either the 6A or 5A polls with HCC opponents Noblesville, HSE, Brownsburg, Avon, Westfield, and Zionsville providing plenty of excitement for fans. Add to that the non-conference schedule of North Central, Pike, and Cathedral and there appears to be no week that the Tigers can afford to relax. Carmel, Noblesville, and HSE await for the sectional draw. Join us for what will most certainly by another exciting season of Fishers Tigers Football.
