    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Tuesday, December 18, 2018 Chargers Lead the NFL with Seven 2019 Pro Bowl Selections The Los Angeles Chargers will be represented by seven players at the 2019 Pro Bowl in Orlando, Fla., the NFL announced Tuesday evening. The seven selections are a league-high and the most for the Chargers since 2008. Traveling to Orlando to represent the AFC are WR Keenan Allen, RB Melvin Gordon, DE Melvin Ingram, S Derwin James, S Adrian Phillips, C Mike Pouncey and QB Philip Rivers. Of the seven selections, two were named starters as James was voted at free safety and Phillips on special teams. Additionally, three more Chargers were named Pro Bowl alternates: OT Russell Okung (first), CB Casey Hayward (second) and FB Derek Watt (third). Allen will be making his second career trip to Orlando as he enters Week 16 with 88 catches for 1,074 yards and six touchdowns. The 6-2 receiver has eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark for the second straight year and for the third time in his career. Allen currently ranks fifth in the AFC with his 88 receptions while his 1,074 yards rank sixth. Gordon has been selected to the Pro Bowl for the second time in his career and for the first time since 2016. Despite missing four games in 2018, the Wisconsin native has amassed 1,255 yards from scrimmage and a career-best 13 total touchdowns. An injury can give a backup his big break, while bringing a veteran's career to a premature end. A star's ill-timed holdout can be another player's ticket to fame and fortune. And so on - it happens every season. Usually, breaks like these benefit rookies or younger players who haven't had a chance at a regular job. But one of the most interesting "right-place-at-the-right-time" stories involves a pair of ten-year veterans whose places in football history were determined after their NFL careers ended. It happened in the 1960s, and the players involved were a couple of pretty fair quarterbacks: George Blanda and Tobin Rote. But let's start at the beginning ... Blanda broke in with the Bears in 1949, but the 12th-round draft choice saw little action behind Johnny Lujack and aging Sid Luckman. He played even less at QB for the next two years, throwing only one pass and spending most of his time as a linebacker and kicker. Meanwhile, Rote had been taken by the Packers in the second round of the 1950 draft and suffered through a tough rookie season, throwing a league-high 24 interceptions. Facing a challenge from a talented passer named Bobby Thomason in 1951, he improved his passing stats and really shone as a runner, leading the team with 523 yards and leading the league with an average of 6.9 yards per carry.
