Gambling Haven? Las Vegas hasn’t always been a gambling hotspot – not legally anyway. The city was founded in 1905 but a federal anti-gambling law shut down the betting in 1910. This merely moved the activity underground until Nevada legalized it again in 1931. And so it continued to grow to the megaresort casino destination we know today. Oddly enough, however, the state of Nevada doesn’t allow a lottery. According to Article IV, Sec. 24 of the state constitution, “No lottery shall be authorized by this state, nor shall the sale of lottery tickets be allowed.” Numerous attempts to overturn this have failed although church raffles and charitable organization fundraisers are now allowed. 130th ANNUAL MEEKER

I know there were lots of rock fans ranting on Facebook that they hated the change, and it screwed up their planned vacations, etc. I suppose change has to be expected from time to time in the world of concerts and promotions. Loud Wire fans will have the opportunity to see some heavyweight talent, including Linkin Park, Rob Zombie, Weezer, A Day to Remember, Halestorm, Theory of a Deadman, Chevelle , Hinder All that Remains, Nothing More, Hoobastank, Bobaflex, The Chimpz, ONE— The Only Tribute to , 3 Pill Morning, The Comedown, Otherwise, Wayland, Righteous Vendetta, Scarlet & The Harlots, The Blackfires, Vajra, Menew, Splitfist & ZamTrip. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like very many local rock bands are getting to play this festival. If you have a chance, check out a new outdoor venue in Grand Junction— it’s called Sweet River Gardens, on 29 Road right by the Colorado River. They have Fantasy Faire happening June 6-7. Farmers Market will be firing up June 18 and running every Thursday thru September 24. Come by our office at 411 1/2 Main—we will be there promoting our local business partners. Be sure to spin our prize wheel—you might be surprised at the valuable prizes we will be offering on our prize wheel. You could win a Source Card or other certificates from the local businesses that support us. You can catch some great music talent on Thursdays in Fruita at their Thursday night free summer concert series at the outdoor Civic Center pavilion. Catch an array of local talent after riding the Fruita trails.

Mark July 25 on your calendar for Cage Wars 22—Night of Champions, under the lights at Allen Unique Autos. Promoter Steve Yates keeps raising the bar when it comes to promotions. This night should be a great night to watch the various MMA matches. I’m looking forward to watching Steve’s son Andrew Yates jump in the cage again. He impressed me with his talents at his last fight in January at CMU. Enjoy the summer, if you hit the river, please wear a life jacket!

Scan Our QR Code

What is cowboy poetry? Cowboy poetry is what happened around the campfire in the days of the Old West right on down through the 1950s and 1960s. A good meal, followed by “tall tales,” poetry, and song. In those times, when roads were scarce and distances long, the cowboys would have to stay with the cattle wherever they might be grazing. In our area, they would drive the cattle up from the winter range in the Grand Valley, to Glade Park and other higher places in the spring. Then, in late May or early June, they would move the herd up to the summer range in the high country, up on Pinyon Mesa or the Grand Mesa. In the evenings, after the day’s work was done, they would cook their meal over a campfire and sit around to talk about the day’s adventures or tell tall tales or sing. Eventually, some began to turn those stories into verse, much of which was humorous. In time, these verses and songs got passed along to All-Access Discount Passes Available for succeeding generations. And that’s how and why we have cowboy poetry and music today. 2015 Strawberry Days Carnival Why the festival? Cowboys and cattle are part of our area’s and the Glade Park community’s heritage.
