I went crazy for this type of music because I listened to it all day and carefully noted all the rap lyrics. If we have to talk about Hip-Hop music, I have to briefly talk about the roots of American Hip-Hop. When I first started listening to Hip-Hop, it was divided up into East Coast and West Coast in America. Wu Tang Clan and Notorius B.I.G. represented the East Coast (New York) scene and they focused largely on the rap and the lyrics, while representing the West Coast (LA) was 2Pac who focused more on the melody. Although at that time in Korea and from my memory, more people listened to West Coast hip hop but I was more into the East Coast style.

The Bella's are back in the sequel to the 2012 surprise hit, "Pitch Perfect," which was made on a $17 million production budget and grossed $65 million at the U. S. box office. Moviegoers knew a sequel would be in the works with those results. This time, everyone's favorite a capella group - the Barden University Bellas - must regain their glory after a humiliating wardrobe malfunction by Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson) that was witnessed by the president of the United States while they performed at the prestigious Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. With nowhere else to turn, the Bellas enter an international competition that no American a cappella group has ever won. The solid ensemble cast from the original Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson) steals the show in movie returns in "Pitch Perfect 2," which includes "Pitch Perfect 2," the follow-up to 2012's Oscar nominee Anna Kendrick (Beca), comedian surprise hit. Photo Richard Cartwright Rebel Wilson (Fat Amy), Brittany Snow (Chloe), Ester Dean (Cynthia), Hana Mae Lee (Lily) and Alexis Knapp (Stacie). Changing Shape: The Evolution of Fat Female Characters in Contemporary American Film A thesis presented to the faculty of the College of Fine Arts of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts Laura E. POHLMAN has been approved for the School of Film and the College of Fine Arts by Ofer Eliaz Assistant Professor of Film Studies Elizabeth Sayrs Interim Dean, College of Fine Arts 3 Abstract LAURA E. POHLMAN, M.A., April 2016, Film Changing Shape: The Evolution of Fat Female Characters in Contemporary American Film Director of Thesis: Ofer Eliaz The purpose of this thesis is to elucidate the fluid conception of fat women within contemporary American culture from the early 1970s to the present. Due to their non- normative embodiment, fat women typically face denigration and marginalization. Most mainstream film narratives reify the negative social positioning of fat women, often through assimilationist characters that resign themselves to fatphobia or otherwise compensate for their fatness. On the flipside, carnival and camp narratives foster liberatory fat characterization, as exemplified by the figure of “the unruly woman.” In his portrayal of both assimilationist and liberationist women, Divine functions as a barometer for subsequent fat characterization. Overall, this thesis critiques fat assimilation, argues for the importance of fat liberation, and projects a future where fat acceptance becomes the norm. 4 Table of Contents Page Abstract ..............................................................................................................................

  • Thesis, the Songs of 10 Rappers Were Analyzed
ABSTRACT Get Rich or Die Tryin’: A Semiotic Approach to the Construct of Wealth in Rap Music Kristine Ann Davis, M.A. Mentor: Sara J. Stone, Ph.D. For the past 30 years, rap music has made its way into the mainstream of America, taking an increasingly prominent place in popular culture, particularly for youth, its main consumers. This thesis looks at wealth through the lens of semiotics, an important component of critical/cultural theory, using a hermeneutical analysis of 11 rap songs, spanning the last decade of rap music to find signification and representation of wealth in the rap song lyrics. The research finds three important themes of wealth - relationship between wealth and the opposite sex, wealth that garners respect from other people, and wealth as a signifier for “living the good life” - and five signifiers of wealth – money, cars, attire, liquor, and bling. Consolidated as the girl power discourse and girls in crisis discourse, the tension between these two intertwined discourses created a space for new narratives of female adolescence in the decade between 1995 and 2005. As sites of cultural construction and representation, teen films reveal the narratives of girlhood. The films under consideration serve as useful exemplars for an examination of how such discourses become mainstreamed, pervading society’s image of female adolescence.

  • Roots and Routes 188
Fendler / Roots and Routes 188 ROOTS AND ROUTES Hip-Hop from South Korea Ute Fendler University of Bayreuth [email protected] Abstract With the growing success of hip-hop in South Korea, the discussions about the authenticity of this genre increase and create cleavages between the mainstream and the underground rappers. The paper intends to analyze three examples of the contemporary music scene that are representative of different positions. Taking Simon Frith’s work on popular music as a means to construct identity, the paper suggests questioning the concept of authenticity (“roots”) and proposes instead conceiving hip-hop in South Korea as a movement at the crossroads (“routes”) of various influences and practices. Keywords Authenticity, Identity, Music videos, Performance, R&B, Rap About the Author Ute Fendler is chair of romance cultural and comparative cultural studies at the University of Bayreuth (Germany). Her research interests include intermedial and intercultural phenomenon, popular culture, migration, iconographies, music video, and performance. Kritika Kultura 29 (2017): –213 © Ateneo de Manila University <http://journals.ateneo.edu/ojs/kk/> Fendler / Roots and Routes 189 In the ongoing process of reaching out to global markets, pop music in South Korea undergoes fast changes, mainly under the influence of US-American and Western European markets, as literature on K-pop highlights (Choi and Maliangkay). John Lie dealt with the question of K-pop as music positioned between different influences: K-pop is symptomatic of the cultural transformation of South Korea: at once the almost complete repudiation of traditional cultures—both Confucian and folk—and the repeated rhetorical stress on the continuities between the past and the present: the nearly empty signifier that is South Korean cultural-national identity.
