The novel is structured in shorter fragments that cycle through multiple characters from the local bar owner, to the homeless men that roam the alleys, to a horse that finds his way into the life of an old widow.     13 The History of Rock's Pasts through Rock Covers (1998) Deena Weinstein She knows how to love me /Yes indeed I Boy you don't know I What she do to me. -Little Richard, "Tutti Frutti" She's a real gone cookie /Yes, sirree I Pretty little Susie I Is the gal far me. -Pat Boone, "Tutti Frutti" In this essay Deena Weinstein usefully defines the cover as an iteration or version of a specific recording, not simply an interpretation of a song, and describes how the purposes and meanings of covers have changed over time. Cover versions played a significant role in the early history of rock, when major record com­ panies had white t>ingers cover hits by black artists to make those hits more acceptable to main­ stream (i.e., white) audiences.These covers made the music more "vanilla," as Pat Boone put it (Szatmary 2009, 25), and earned millions for the cover artists and their companies; the original artists were paid little or nothing for their songs. In the 'SOs rock 'n' roll had just been born and therefore had little history to draw upon. Audiences often did not know the original versions of cover songs; thus, rock was in a state of what Weinstein calls the "eternal now." By the '60s rock had developed a history, and cov­ ers both celebrated the original versions and used them to confer a sort of authenticity upon the cover artists. In the late '60s rock demanded originality, and the cover version became less important. The classical music "covers" of such groups as Emerson, Lake and Palmer in the early '70s were not about authenticity, but rather; about demonstrating virtuosity.

Das neue, vierte Album der amerikanischen Kultformation Tito & Tarantula ist da! Und Mastermind Tito Larriva, “der Spezialist für musikalische Road Movies” (Visions), zeigt sich auf “Andalucia” so abwechslungsreich wie niemals zuvor. Die insgesamt vierzehn Tracks haben definitiv alles, was ein aussergewöhnliches Rockalbum braucht: Trockener, gemeingefährlicher Wüstenrock trifft auf erhabenen, von einer wunderhübschen Melancholie umgarnten Pop; Mexiko ist nicht weit und auch der Blues und die psychedelischen 70er Jahre kommen zu ihrem Recht. Kurz: “Andalucia” ist gross! Dieses Album hat Seele. Von den “Flesh Eaters” zur Fernsehgala nach Berlin... Seit nunmehr über zwanzig Jahren geht Multitalent Tito Larriva mit einer bemerkenswerten Konsequenz seinen Weg durch die Welt der Musik und des Films. Dabei vermied er es stets, die von vermeintlichen Trends vorgegebenen Bahnen des Mainstreams zu wählen, sondern entschied sich statt derer für jene kleinen, unscheinbaren und verschlungenen Pfade, von denen man - wenn man sie denn nicht geht - niemals genau wissen kann, wohin sie einen führen werden. Und so wird der in Mexiko geborenen Larriva, als er irgendwann in den frühen 80ern mit Punkbands wie den “Flesh Eaters”, “The Impalas” den “Plugz” oder “The Cruzados” anfing Musik zu machen, wohl niemals einen Gedanken daran verschwendet haben, dass er Ende 2001 in Berlin vor einem schlips- und abendkleidtragenden Publikum den Deutschen Fernsehpreis in der Kategorie “Beste Musik” für den Film “Der Schrei des Schmetterlings” überreicht bekommen würde...es war ihm seinerzeit ganz einfach egal.

Mueller All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT This thesis is an analysis of the genre of Detroit dance music known as ghettotech based primarily on ethnographic data collected from music producers and DJs. After constructing a genealogy tying together ghettotech’s influences from Detroit techno, hip hop, and Miami bass, I discuss how ghettotech rearticulates authenticity discourses present in antecedent genres in the production of its own authenticity.
