He spent his youth in Vermont and Kentucky, attending Indiana University where in 1964 he earned a BA in English with a minor in film and photography. He has since pursued a career as a novelist and documentary writer, the latter in conjunction with his wife, Laurie Block. In 1993, he began teaching courses in Utopian fiction and fiction writing at Yale University. Although Crowley's fiction is frequently categorized as science fiction and fantasy, Gerald Jonas more accurately places him among "writers who feel the need to reinterpret archetypical materials in light of modern experience." Crowley considers only his first three novels to be science fiction. The Deep (1975) and Beasts (1976) take place in futuristic settings, depicting science gone wrong and the individual search for identity and purpose. Engine Summer (1978) amplifies these themes with history, odd lore and arcane knowledge, and extends his work beyond the genre "into the hilly country on the borderline of literature" (Charles Nichol). -

JOHN CROWLEY/BACKGROUND Long a Gene Wolfe fan, I was turned on to Crowley by two other Gene Wolfe fans, Michael Andre-Druissi and Alice K. Turner, both literary critics who would eventually compile a book on Crowley. Crowley completed his first novel (I’ve forgotten what it was called then) in the late ‘60s, but put it aside to publish two others: The Deep (1975), arguably a Shakespearean history set on a circular chessboard floating in space (Terry Pratchett may have pinched this idea for his Discworld series), complete with aliens and androids, and Beasts (1976), in which certain 1960s political movements are re-cast in a futuristic New York, where the characters are either a) animal-like, b) part animal or c) animals. Although very different, both works feature highly stylized prose. Part of the fun of these novels is trying to figure out why Crowley tells his stories the way that he does. Crowley then revised his first novel and published it as Engine Summer (1979). Although it touches on many of the same themes (e.g. storytelling), Engine Summer is unlike Crowley’s other two science fiction novels in that it actually packs some pathos. Engine Summer was Crowley’s last science-fiction novel. His next project was the sprawling, even more highly stylized, World-Fantasy-Award-winning fairy tale, Little, Big (1981). Little, Big draws heavily on a symbolic language that was developed in the earlier science fiction novels. It is an amazingly multi-textured work, but the pacing is frequently awkward. It doesn’t grab the reader like Engine Summer. -

His father was an officer in the US Army Air Corps. He grew up in Vermont, north-eastern Kentucky and educated in Indiana, where he went to high school and college. He moved to New York City after college to make movies, and did find work in documentary films, an occupation he still pursues. He is an American author of fantasy, science fiction and mainstream fiction. He published his first novel - The Deep in 1975 and his 11th volume of fiction - Four Freedoms in 2009. He is best known as the author of Little, Big (1981), which received the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel and has been called "a neglected masterpiece" by Harold Bloom (Bloom, Harold 2003). Since 1993 he is teaching ‘creative writing’ at Yale University (faculty profile, Yale University, England. 2012). He has also taught at the ‘Clarion West Writers' Workshop held annually in Seattle, Washington. In 1992, he received the Award in Literature from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. His writings are much influenced by his old and original mentor Nabokov. In an Interview in 2009, when he was asked about his ideas of fantasy and real world, he said that, ‘My real Mentor Nabokov said that the great novels of the realist tradition, like War and Peace and Madame Bovary, are actually great fairy tales. -
