Harrill a,c a Neurotoxicology Division, National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory, Office of Research and Development, USEPA, RTP, NC, United States b U.S. National Research Council, United States c Curriculum in Toxicology, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC, United States Received 13 July 2007; received in revised form 22 October 2007; accepted 28 October 2007 Abstract Pyrethroids are pesticides with high selectivity for insects. In order to identify strengths and gaps in the database for pyrethroid neurobehavioral toxicology, we have critically analyzed the data from peer-reviewed literature. This review includes dose–response data that have been recently generated demonstrating consistent findings for low-dose, acute, oral exposure to pyrethroids in small rodents. All pyrethroids tested (i.e., about twenty compounds), regardless of structure, produce a decrease in motor activity in a variety of test protocols. The range of relative potencies varies more than two orders of magnitude, and thresholds for motor activity were found well below doses that produce overt signs of poisoning. Six compounds (allethrin, permethrin, cis-permethrin, deltamethrin, cypermethrin, and fenvalerate) impair schedule-controlled operant responding, seven compounds (pyrethrum, bifenthrin, S-bioallethrin, permethrin, β-cyfluthrin, cypermethrin, and deltamethrin) decrease grip strength, and two compounds (deltamethrin and α- cypermethrin) produce incoordination using the rotarod. In addition, while compounds lacking an α-cyano group (e.g., cismethrin, permethrin, bifenthrin) induce an increase in acoustic-evoked startle response amplitude, cyano compounds (e.g., deltamethrin, cypermethrin, cyfluthrin) produce the opposite outcome.

    Malayan Nature Journal 2006, 57(4), 433 - 462 Insect species described from Alfred Russel Wallace's Sarawak collections ANDREW POLASZEKl* and EARL OF CRANBROOK2 Abstract In just over a year spent in Sarawak (1854-1856) Wallace collected over 25,000 insect specimens; by his estimate, these represented over 5,000 species. About two-fifths of these were beetles, and over 200 of these were formally described in the 1850's and 60's, largely by 1.S. Baly and F.P. Pascoe. Nearly 400 species of moths from Wallace's Sarawak collections, including over 100 new genera, were described by Francis Walker. Fredrick Smith described 150 Hymenoptera from these collections, and taking into account Diptera and Hemiptera from the same collections, this brings the total number of insect species described to well in excess of 1,000. INTRODUCTION Alfred Russel Wallace has a reputation as an extremely prolific collector of plants and animals from many parts of the world, notably the Amazon Basin and the Malay Archipelago. His relatively brief period collecting in a geographically limited area of Sarawak on the island ofBomeo dramatically illustrates his abilities as a co llector and field taxonomist, able to recognise differences between species across a huge range of diverse insect orders. Wallace in Sarawak Alfred Russel Wallace arrived in Sarawak on 1st November 1854 and left on January 25th 1856 (Wallace, 1869). In a little more than a year, and in a rather limited geographical area of southwestern Sarawak (fig. 1), with the aid of Charles Allen and various local assistants, Wallace collected and shipped back to London more than 25,000 insect specimens.

Lyngby, Denmark; [email protected] Received: 19 december 2017 / Accepted: 26 January 2018 © 2018 Wageningen Academic Publishers OPEN ACCESS REVIEW ARTICLE Abstract A very large number of filamentous fungi has been reported to produce the small lactone mycotoxins patulin, penicillic acid and moniliformin. Among the 167 reported fungal producers of patulin, only production by 29 species could be confirmed. Patulin is produced by 3 Aspergillus species, 3 Paecilomyces species, 22 Penicillium species from 7 sections of Penicillium, and one Xylaria species. Among 101 reported producers of penicillic acid, 48 species could produce this mycotoxin. Penicillic acid is produced by 23 species in section Aspergillus subgenus Circumdati section Circumdati, by Malbranchea aurantiaca and by 24 Penicillium species from 9 sections in Penicillium and one species that does not actually belong to Penicillium (P. megasporum). Among 40 reported producers of moniliformin, five species have been regarded as doubtful producers of this mycotoxin or are now regarded as taxonomic synonyms. Moniliformin is produced by 34 Fusarium species and one Penicillium species. All the accepted producers of patulin, penicillic acid and moniliformin were revised according to the new one fungus – one name nomenclatural system, and the most recently accepted taxonomy of the species.     Appendix H. Bibliography of ECOTOX Papers No study endpoints from the ECOTOX open literature references were selected for use in the quantitative estimation of risk. The following points summarize the reasons why no endpoints were selected from the open literature. • The study had endpoints that were higher than those used from the studies submitted to the Agency • The study was an efficacy-type study with no endpoints. • Some study endpoints were not relevant for assessment of risk to the CRLF (e.g., marine/estuarine endpoints). The following is an explanation of the acceptability criteria and rejection codes used for the ECOTOX papers. The ECOTOX bibliography follows the acceptability criteria and rejection code discussion. Explanation of OPP Acceptability Criteria and Rejection Codes for ECOTOX Data Studies located and coded into ECOTOX must meet acceptability criteria, as established in the Interim Guidance of the Evaluation Criteria for Ecological Toxicity Data in the Open Literature, Phase I and II, Office of Pesticide Programs, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, July 16, 2004. Studies that do not meet these criteria are designated in the bibliography as “Accepted for ECOTOX but not OPP.” The intent of the acceptability criteria is to ensure data quality and verifiability. The criteria parallel criteria used in evaluating registrant-submitted studies. Specific criteria are listed below, along with the corresponding rejection code. · The paper does not report toxicology information for a chemical of concern to OPP; (Rejection Code: NO COC) · The article is not published in English language; (Rejection Code: NO FOREIGN) · The study is not presented as a full article.
