The Commissioned Works of the National Flute Association For
THE COMMISSIONED WORKS OF THE NATIONAL FLUTE ASSOCIATION FOR THE YOUNG ARTIST AND HIGH SCHOOL SOLOIST COMPETITIONS DOCUMENT Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Kimberlee Goodman, M.M. ***** The Ohio State University 2007 Document Committee: Approved by Professor Katherine Borst Jones, Adviser Dr. Robert Ward _____________________________ Dr. Susan Powell Adviser Music Graduate Program ABSTRACT The National Flute Association, an organization of professionals, amateurs, teachers, performers, and students has been active in the commissioning of new music for some of its competitions since 1986. The organization is responsible for more than forty new works for the Young Artist and High School Soloist competitions alone. The commissioning process has changed vastly over the years that the organization has been in existence. The National Flute Association commissions composers from all over the world to write pieces for two of its competitions; the Young Artist Competition has been commissioning works since 1986, and the High School Soloist Competition began commissioning new works in 1989. Additionally, the importance of the National Flute Association has led to many world premiere performances and individuals commissioning works to be premiered at the annual conventions. The purpose of this document is to highlight the competition commissioned works of this organization and its continuing commitment to presenting and championing new music. The National Flute Association has established itself as a leading organization in creating new works, and these commissioned pieces now represent a major body of work and a substantial portion of the newly composed repertoire for flute. -
Hermann Wedekind and Georgian Musical Culture Ekaterine Buchukuri Vano Sarajishvili Tbilisi State Conservatoire (TSC) 8/10, Griboedov Str.,Tbilisi, 0108, Georgia
GESJ: Musicology and Cultural Science 2017|No.2(16) ISSN 1512-2018 UDC - 78.01 Hermann Wedekind and Georgian Musical Culture Ekaterine Buchukuri Vano Sarajishvili Tbilisi State Conservatoire (TSC) 8/10, Griboedov str.,Tbilisi, 0108, Georgia Summury: In 2017 Georgia and Germany celebrate the 200th Anniversary of enduring friendship. These relations between the two countries had become more active over time. An important part of these relations is the significance of German culture in Georgia, the Germans’ contribution to the development of Georgian musical culture, music education system, performing arts. One of the interesting episodes of these relations is German stage director, the intendant of Saarbrücken opera theatre, actor Hermann Wedekind, who was one of the initiators and leaders of Tbilisi-Saarbrücken, relations and cultural ties between the partner cities. For his contribution to Georgian culture he was awarded honorary citizenship of Tbilisi in 1995. The paper aims to introduce Hermann Wedekind’s works, which are linked to Georgian opera and performance of “Daisi” in Saarbrücken. Keywords: Hermann Wedekind, Georgian musical culture in Germany, Tbilisi- Saarbrücken, “Daisi” in Saarbrücken. Introduction In 2017 Georgia and Germany celebrate the 200th anniversary of enduring friendship. An important part in these relations is the contribution of the Germans to the development of Georgian musical culture, music education system, performing arts and activities of separate musicians in Georgia. The paper touches only upon one episode of these relations –the role of Hermann Wedekind in the history of Georgian musical culture; he became the symbol of the relations between German and Georgian cultures; the person whose name is associated with the initiative to establish cultural links between Tbilisi and Saarbrücken – the cities of two countries with different ideologies and political systems for the first time in Soviet epoch; a German in love with Georgian culture, who was its great supporter and promoter in Europe. -

Slavimo življenje in glasbo! rage ljubiteljice in ljubitelji glasbe, Ludwig van Beethoven, čigar 250. obletnico smrti zaznamujemo letos, ni D mogel brez glasbe niti takrat, ko ni več slišal. -

Welcome from Leopold de Rothschild CBE Joint President, Jewish Music Institute Welcome to the second JMI conference on the subject of music and musical life affected by National Socialism. We are delighted to have as our partner the Institute of Musical Research at the School of Advanced Study, University of London, directed by Professor Katharine Ellis and administered by Valerie James. Distinguished scholars have come together from as far as Australia, Austria, Canada, Germany, Holland, Hong Kong, Ireland, Israel, Norway, Poland, Spain, around the UK, and the USA. This goes to show how interest in the music of this particular period is growing across the world. And it only uncovers how much work there is still to do. The Conference encompasses 43 papers plus two award-winning films broadcast by the BBC to be introduced by their directors, Christopher Nupen and Simon Broughton, and also a preview of a website on music in the Holocaust to which many of our delegates have contributed.
