The organization is responsible for more than forty new works for the Young Artist and High School Soloist competitions alone. The commissioning process has changed vastly over the years that the organization has been in existence. The National Flute Association commissions composers from all over the world to write pieces for two of its competitions; the Young Artist Competition has been commissioning works since 1986, and the High School Soloist Competition began commissioning new works in 1989. Additionally, the importance of the National Flute Association has led to many world premiere performances and individuals commissioning works to be premiered at the annual conventions. The purpose of this document is to highlight the competition commissioned works of this organization and its continuing commitment to presenting and championing new music. The National Flute Association has established itself as a leading organization in creating new works, and these commissioned pieces now represent a major body of work and a substantial portion of the newly composed repertoire for flute. ii Dedicated to my mother, Catherine Davis Goodman (September 8, 1947-January 15, 2006). However, the organization has not publicized these works beyond first performances. It seemed that work needed to be done to put together a listing of all pieces commissioned by the NFA for its competitions with other relevant information to make it possible for flutists to easily find these pieces. As research began on this topic it was discovered that many holes existed in the history of the commissioned works of the NFA. Thorough records have not been kept of composer contracts, winners of the Best Performance of the Commissioned Works from the Young Artist and High School Soloist Competitions, and the NFA library in Tucson, Arizona did not house a complete collection of these pieces. As the association's money has been spent to commission this music, it is therefore important that these works should be made available and become known to the membership and the flute community at large. By providing biographical information about the composers, comments from composers pertaining to their works, and an annotated bibliography, this document will serve as a resource for flutists looking to perform these compositions. viii Procedures and Methods Used To complete this study, contact was made with the NFA office, the current CEO (since 1991), current and former board members, current and former committee chairs, composers, and competition winners. Composer’s websites were consulted for biographical information. A questionnaire was sent to the composers of the commissioned works for the Young Artist and High School Soloist competitions. Past convention program books and the official magazine of the association, The Flutist Quarterly, provided a great deal of information. Of special help was the special Flutist Quarterly, Celebrating 25 Years of performance, music and growth, Vol. 23, No. 2 Winter 1997-98 Anniversary Issue. To glean specific information regarding the Young Artist winners who performed debut recitals in Carnegie Hall, the New York Times archive was also consulted. Competition commissions are the focus of this document. However, it is important to note that the NFA has commissioned pieces other than those for competitions. A list of these works appears in Appendix D. Organization of Document This document will provide overviews of the Young Artist and High School Soloist Competitions as well as the New Music (Advisory) Committee, which was responsible for choosing the commissioned composers. Also included are the results ix of a survey given to the composers of the commissioned works, biographies of these composers, and an annotated bibliography of their compositions. The appendices include supplemental information. Appendix A provides a generic composer contract to show the reader the guidelines given to the composer for the commission. Appendix B offers the reader a view of the questionnaire provided to the composers. Appendix C lists the first place winners of the Young Artist and High School Soloist Competitions. When available, the flutists’ current position is listed, along with their educational background including with whom they studied. Appendix D contains the additional commissioned works of the NFA. These pieces are listed to show the breadth of the commissioning of works by the NFA. In Appendix E, the inclusion of additional premiered works was added to show the importance of the venue provided by the NFA convention; that

Non-performance competitions are: a Flute Choir Composition Competition, Graduate Research, and Newly Published Music. Performance competitions are: Young Artist Competition, High School Soloist Competition, Convention Performers Competition, Flute Choirs Competitions, Professional, Collegiate, High School, and Jazz Flute Big Band, and a Masterclass Competition. These competitions provide opportunities for flutists ranging from amateurs to professionals. University/college flute choirs perform original manuscripts, arrangements and transcriptions, as well as the commissioned pieces, frequently at conventions, thus expanding substantially the repertoire for flute choir. The purpose of my work is to document commissioned repertoire for flute choir, music for five or more flutes, presented by university/college flute choirs and NFA sponsored flute choirs at NFA annual conventions. Composer, title, premiere and publication information, conductor, performer and instrumentation will be included in an annotated bibliography format. A brief history of the flute choir and its repertoire, as well as a history of NFA-sponsored flute choir (1973–2012) will be included in this document.

    2015/16 Season: Constellations Persichetti @ 100 and Music from the Generation He Inspired 31ST SEASON 17 & 18 October, 2015 Curtis Institute of Music Philadelphia, PA Introduction: Vincent Persichetti @ 100 Vincent Persichetti was one of the most widely respected musicians of his generation. A prolific composer, brilliant educator and lecturer, and prodigious pianist, he composed more than 150 works in virtu- ally all genres and for virtually all performing media, while serving for 40 years on the faculty of the Juilliard School, many of them as chairman of the composition department. During his lifetime Persichetti influenced the musical lives of thou- sands of people from all walks of life, and his name came to signify a comprehensive musicianship virtually unparalleled among American composers. Countless young pianists were nurtured on his sonatinas and the Little Piano Book, while many other young instrumental students first experienced serious contemporary music through his works for band; church choirs turned to his Hymns and Respons- es for the Church Year as an inexhaustible resource, while many young composers have found his classic textbook Twentieth Century Harmony to be an indispensable tool; among professional soloists and conductors his sonatas, concertos, and symphonies stood among the masterworks of American music. Throughout his life Persichetti encouraged healthy, creative participation in music at all levels of proficiency, while shunning dogmas that advocated one composition- al approach at the expense of others. He was beloved and admired as a teacher, and was in great demand as a lecturer, using his comprehensive knowledge of the repertoire, extraordinary gift for improvisation, awe-inspiring piano technique, and mischievous wit to captivate audiences.

C. Schirmer Music Company, including 7 operas, works for chorus, solo voice, orchestra, band, and chamber music. He has received commissions from Chanticleer, the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, the Oakland, Stockton, and Dayton Symphonies, the Atlantic Classical Orchestra, and from the American Guild of Organists. In 2007 he received the Raymond Brock commission from the American Choral Directors Association, one of the nation’s highest honors in choral music. He co-wrote the film score for the acclaimed documentary Ballets Russes, shown at the Sundance and Toronto Film Festivals in 2005, and composed the music for the PBS documentary, Orozco: Man of Fire, shown on GUEST ARTIST RECITAL the American Masters Series in the fall of 2007. In 1982, Conte lived and worked with Aaron Copland while preparing a study of the composer’s sketches, having received a Fulbright Fellowship for study with Copland’s teacher Nadia Boulanger in Paris, where he was one of her last students. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Bowling Green State University and his master’s and doctoral degrees from Cornell University. He is Professor of Composition and Chair of the Composition Department at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. In 2010 he was appointed to the composition faculty of the European American Musical Alliance in Paris.
