After winning the first six games, the Eagles (6-2/2-2) have

lost their last two to Akron (30-7) and Murray State (45-11).

going through what they went through. We have had our three

Game Notes November 8, 1 986 Morehead State Eagles (6-2/2- 2) vs Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders (4-4/2-2) Floyd Stadium (15 , 000 ) Game #9

LAST WEEK ...... Morehead State dropped its second straight after winning six in a row to Murray State 45- 11. The Eagles managed only 37 yards rushing in the game . Middle Tennessee won its third straight by downing Youngstown State 49-14 . MTSU started by losing four of its first five games this season.

THE SERIES ...... Middle Tennessee and Morehead State are meeting for the 37th time on the gridiron . The Blue Raiders hold a commanding 28- 7 lead with one tie . The Eagles are 6-14 against MTSU at Morehead and 1- 14- 1 at Murfreesboro. MSU's last win in this series came here at Floyd Stadium in 1980 (17-10).

THE COACHES ...... MSU's Bill Baldridge is coaching his 31st game at MSU. His record at his alma mater ('68) is now 9-21 in his third season. Overall he is 14-26 at the collegiate level . Middle Tennessee ' s Boots Donelly is 51-35 at MTSU in his eight season and 65-42 overall in his tenth season.

EAGLES IN MUST WIN SITUATION ...... If Morehead State is to chal lenge for a top spot in the OVC standings, then today ' s game is a must (win) situation. However, the same holds true for Middle Tennessee. Here's a look at the OVC standings : (OVC) (OVERALL) 1. Akron 3-1 6-2-0 2 . Eastern Kentucky 3-1 5- 2-1 3 . Murray State 3-1 4-3-1 4. MOREHEAD STATE 2-2 6-2-0 5 . Middle Tennessee 2-2 4-4-0 6. Austin Peay 2-2 4-4-0 7. Youngstown State 1-3 1-7-0 8 . Tennessee Tech 0-4 0-7-0

-more- EAGLES SHAKE-UP DEFENSIVE LINE ...... Because of injuries, the Eagles have made some changes on the defensive line. Randy Frazier will move from his linebacker position to right tackle and Tony Sergent will move from a tackle position to left guard. Freshman David Gifford will make his starting debut at right end. These changes were made to help compensate for the injured Greg Ramey and Tony Clayton, who are probably lost for the season.

BLUE RAIDERS ARE LIKE THIEVES IN THE NIGHT ...... Morehead State better tuck the ball in securely and quarterback Adrian Breen better make sure receivers are open, because MTSU has a (+14) mark in turnover margin, which is tops in the country (Div. I-AA). MTSU has picked off 18 passes which is tops in the OVC.

THE BREEN MACHINE MOVES CLOSER TO RECORD BOOK ...... Adrian Breen continues to move closer to three passing records at MSU. He needs 17 completions (which could come today) to tie a season record at MSU. Here's a look at the records:

(Current Record) (Needed To Tie Record)

Most Completions In A Season 167 (Mike Hanlin, 1984) 17 Completions

Most Passing Yards In A Season 2345 (Charles Porter, 1950) 639 yards

Most Touchdown Passes In A Season 20 (Mike Hanlin, 1984) 20 (Charles Porter, 1950) 7 TD passes

The Eagles, 6-3 overall and 2-3 in the OVC , are hoping the

EAGLES AND COLONELS PLAY FOR HI GH STAKES THIS WEEK IN RI CHMO ND

MOREHEAD, Ky.-----A lot is at stake for both teams when Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky renew their rivalry for the 57th time this Saturday at Hanger Field at 1: 30 p.m. A victory for Morehead State (7-3-0/3-3) wou l d give the Eagles a record 'eight wins' in one season and an outside shot at the Division I-AA playoffs. "This has all of the makings of a dandy game,• MSU head coach· Bill Baldridge said. "We have some momentum thanks to our win last week which we thought was a must going to Eastern

this week . They had a big win last week too." "It will be important for us to play with a lot of emotion. An air of excitement exists at Morehead State University for what looks to be an improved 1986-87 Eagle basketball team.

The reason for optimism at MSU is three-fold: First, MSU returns three players ready for their senior year. Secondly, five freshmen who saw extensive playing time last year are now mature sophomores. Finally, MSU has added four quality recruits, two from the junior college ranks.

The MSU coaching staff is hoping those three factors will spell success in 1986-87 after seeing a young team finish 8-19 last season.

"The key for our program to return to the kinds of success we have had in the past, will primarily rest with our young, but experienced returning players and senior leadership from Bob Mccann

(6-9, 24?, Sr.), Willie Feldhaus (6-6, 188, Sr.), and Steve Brooks

(6-7, 211, Sr.)," MSU head coach Wayne Martin commented.

"Jeff Griffin (6-4½, 195, So.), Bo Rivers (6-3, 202, So.), Kevin

Simpson (6-7, 180, So.), Darrin Hale (6-8, 200, So.) and Mike Chaney

(6-8, 200, So.) are all back for their second year and should be much improved and much more consistent."

The list of returning lettermen (10) begins with Bob Mccann.

The 6-9 center from Morristown, N.J., has led MSU in scoring the last two seasons. Last year he averaged 16.9 ppg and 10.4 rpg. The two-time All-OVC selection is the sixth-best returning rebounder in the nation and the thirteenth-best shot blocker (2.5 bpg) in the country.

Mccann is a legitimate candidate for All-American and OVC

Player of the Year.

Also returning are senior Willie Feldhaus and sophomore Jeff

Griffin.

Feldhaus started 15 games last season averaging 8.4 ppg and 2.5 rpg. The Maysville, Ky. native came on strong at the end of last seasonaveragingl6.5 ppg over the last six games. He was also a

GTE-CoSIDA District IV Academic All-America selection.

Griffin was given the job of running the offense last year as a freshman. The Prospect, Ky. native started all 27 games last season averaging 6.8 ppg and 1.8 rpg. He also dished out a team high 144 assists, the third highest season mark by an MSU player.

Other freshmen that cracked the starting five at some last season include Bo Rivers, Kevin Simpson, Darrin Hale and Mike

Chaney.

Rivers started 19 games last year finishing with an average of

5.3 ppg and 3.7 rpg. He was the third highest rebounder on the team.

Simpson started in five games, but appeared in 24 games, coming on strong toward the end of the year. The Newark, N.J.,native averaged 5.2 ppg and 2.8 rpg.

Hale and Chaney will be counted on to help fill the middle this year. Hale played in 22 games last season, starting in four of them. He ended the season with an average of 4.4 ppg and2.4 rpg.

-more- Chaney c o ntinued to improve thr oughout his freshman sea son finishing wit h 1 . 8 ppg and 1. 7 rpg.

Ta l bert Turner is the o n ly retu rning j u nior on the team. The

5 -10 guard appe a r e d i n 24 games last season and f i nished wi th the third h i ghest s cor ing average (7 . 4 ppg) .

Steve Brooks , one of four seniors, wil l play a valuable leader ship role for MSU . The hard-working forward/center appeared in eight games last season and started twice .

Pate Clements returns for h i s senior season. After appearing in 25 games last year , seven as a starter , the Tallahassee, Fla. , native averaged 4.8 ppg and 4 . 2 ppg .

Craig Smith returns for hi s sophomore season to give MSU depth at the g uard position. Smith played i n four games last season.

MSU's newcomers include juni or college transfers Derrick Davis and Michael Mason , and freshmen Robin Lott and Tony Curry.

Davis, a 6- 4½ guard/ forward from Walker Junior College averaged 20.3 ppg and 7.5 rpg last season.

Mason , a 6-1 g uard from John C. Calhoun Communi ty College averaged 17 . 3 ppg and 6.2 assists per game last season.

Lott , a 6-4 swing player , was the number one player in British

Columbia last season. The amazing shooter from D.W. Poppy High

School in Langley , Canada averaged 35.3 ppg and 12.0 rpg last season .

Curry, a 6- 2 guard from Louisville Manual High School , averaged

21.1 ppg and 6 . 8 rpg. He was an all-region and honorable-mention all- s t ate selection.

"Derrick Davi s will push returnees for a starting birth at possi bly three d i fferent positi ons ," Marti n claimed. "Tony Curry

-more- and Mike Mason will add much needed athletic ability to our squad while Robin Lott is a shooting deluxe."

This year's schedule includes 15 regular season games at MSU's

7,000 seat Academic-Athletic Center.

The non-conference road schedule finds the Eagles at Indiana,

Cincinnati, South Carolina State and the Iona Tournament.

BALDRIDGE NAMED COACH OF THE YEAR; FIVE EAGLES HONORED BY OVC

MOREHEAD, Ky.--- Morehead State football coach Bill Baldridge was

named the 1986 Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year by his peers

this week after guiding his Eagles to a 7-4 mark in just his third

season as MSU head coach.

Baldridge joins some good company with the honor as he is only the

second coach in MSU history to receive the award The first Eagle football

coach to be named OVC Coach of the Year was Guy Penny, who coached at MSU

from 1959 to 1967. Penny received the award in 1966. Ironically, Baldridge

was a member of that 1966 squad which won the Ohio Valley Conference

title.

MSU tied the school record for most wins in a season and for six

weeks were ranked in the NCAA Div. I-AA top twenty poll. MSU's highest

ranking (#2) came during the third week of October.

Three Morehead State Eagles, quarterback Adrian Breen, offensive guard

Billy Poe and punter Greg Burke, were all named First-Team All-OVC .

Breen completed 202 passes in 347 attempts for 2,301 yards and 16

touchdowns this past season while Burke punted for a new Ohio Valley

Conference record 44 . 1 yards per punt. Poe, a Sporting News Preseason

All-America pick, received the OVC honor for the second time.

Two other Eagles , center Howard Jacobs and defensive tackle Tony

Sergent, were named honorable-mention All-OVC. Jacobs was a four-year

letterman for the Eagles while Sergent was among the conference leaders in t ackl es-for-loss.

- 30- Dear MSU Football Fans,

We would like to take this opportunity to express our

deepest appreciation for the reception we were given last

Sunday. After an emotional victory like the one against

Wichita State, and the long ride home, it is easy to be-

· come drained and in a sense lathargic. Your great support

was not only a pleasant surprise, but a great emotional

pickup to put us back on track to get ready for this weeks

game against the Thorobreds of Kentucky State. As I have

stated upon many occasions this team belongs to the students

and faculty of MSU as well as the residents of Morehead and

the surrounding communities. It is your team. Your support

Sunday has started the ball rolling against Kentucky State.

I only hope that we can continue this great support by filling

the stands this Saturday as we dedicate our new Omni-Turf

surface. Together, WE can take this season as far as we want.

Thanks again for your great support.

QUOTES FROM WAYNE MARTIN ......

(About the South Carolina State game.)

"They (SCS) played a lot better than they had in their first four games. We were in position to win at the end, but just turned the ball over . Actually, we played pretty well and we'd like to think that on our next road trip we will be successfull . "

"We need a win . We have now played two straight games that could have been wins, but were losses. We need to keep looking at the positive."

(About the first four games.)

"We have a team that has had four to six players play well each game . We are still searching for the chemistry that will make us as good as we can be. We are playing hard and doing some thi~gs very well." .. -

"We will continue to make progress because we are playing hard . After two losses it certainly is going to be tough getting back on the winning track with three road games, but that ' s what we have to do to boost our confidence."

(About the Wagner College game . )

"Terrance Bailey l ed the nation (Div. I) in scoring last year (29.4 ppg) and reportedly shoots the ball when he comes out of the dressing room. It will be somewhat of a home game for them. "

"This will be a homecoming of sorts for Bob Mccann (Morristown, N.J.) and Kevin Simpson (Newark, N. J.), but the trip up east will be a first time experience for the majority of our team. There are many values to athletes and certainly travel is one of the signific~nt educational processes for them."

QUOTES FROM NBA SCOUTS ON BOB MCCANN

" The player in Kentucky this year is the kid at Morehead State Bob Mccann . I saw him in New York and at Indiana and I ' m telling you t hat kid can play . I really think he ' ll play in the NBA. He ' s got the body. He ' s got the game . All the kid has to do is work and play hard . If he does that .... I don't know. The sky is the limit.

He's going to get a big , big look. I'm telling you what : I'm taking that kid straight to Hawaii (for t he prestigiou s Aloha Classic All Star series). All the big time guys will see him there .

I think he ' s just like Charles Oakley . He ' s a sleeper . But he won ' t be for long . You don ' t find 6- 9 guys who can run , jump and shoot l ike he can. Name me one? Go ahead. I would not be surprised at all if that guy went high in the draft . I mean high." ...... Marty Blake , Director of Scouting for the Nat ional Basketball Association Jan . 15 , 1987

" He's very active. He has quickness, excellent hands and is a good jumper . He really was active , very active." ...... , General Manager, Jan. 1987

COACHES QOUTES ON BOB MCCANN

"Mccann was a very, very tough player. He has great hands and r eally works to get the basketball. I 'm not s ure I've seen a kid do a better job getting things done with people around him. He had 13 free throws in the first half and certainly deserved to shoot a ll of those." ...... Bobby Knight , head basketball coach , Indiana (1986-87 season)

" Bob Mccann can be a dominating inside player . He's a lot like Karl Malone, formerly of Louisana Tech. When Mccann comes to play, he can deliver." ...... Rick Huckabay, head basketball coach, Marshall (1985-86 season)

"Bob Mccann could be a mini in the making if he shows improvement. He is very difficult to defend , a talented player." ...... , head basketball coach, Indiana State (1985-86 season

With the qualities he possesses - size, strength, and agility - Bob is certain to be one of the outstanding performers i n our league the next two years ." ...... Tom Deaton , head basketball coach, Tennessee Tech (1985- 86 seaso

"Year in and year out , there are some very fine p l ayers in the OVC . Throughout the years, there have also been some exceptional players and Bob Mccann is certainly that. He has improved tremendously and has worked on the things that will make him a better player. He ' s the t ype of player who can turn things around himself .
