The so-called ‘river dolphins’ are now recognized as independent lineages that converged on similar morphological specializations (e.g., longirostry). In South America, the two endemic ‘river dolphin’ lineages form a clade (Inioidea), with closely related fossil inioids from marine rock units in the South Pacific and North Atlantic oceans. Here we describe a new genus and species of fossil inioid, Isthminia panamensis, gen. et sp. nov. from the late Miocene of Panama. The type and only known specimen consists of a partial skull, mandibles, isolated teeth, a right scapula, and carpal elements recovered from Submitted 27 April 2015 the Pina˜ Facies of the Chagres Formation, along the Caribbean coast of Panama. -

The lack of a high-resolution stratigraphic framework has hampered such study. In this paper we develop the needed stratigraphy for the areas in the Pisco Formation where most of the vertebrate paleontological research is occurring. In the Ica Valley and in the vicinity of Lomas, series of lithologically or paleontologically unique marker beds were identified. These were walked out and documented with GPS technology. Measured sections connecting these marker beds provide a stratigraphic framework for the areas studied. GPS locations, maps of the marker beds on aerial photographs, and outcrop photographs allow field determination of the stratigraphic positions of study areas. Although glyptodonts were an important component of Cenozoic South American faunas, their early evolution and phylogenetic affinities within the order Cingulata (armoured New World placental mammals) remain controversial. In this study, we used hybridization enrichment and high-throughput sequencing to obtain a partial mitochondrial genome from Doedicurus sp., the largest (1.5 m tall, and 4 m long) and one of the last surviving glyptodonts. Our molecular phylogenetic analyses revealed that glyptodonts fall within the diver- sity of living armadillos. Reanalysis of morphological data using a molecular ‘back- bone constraint’ revealed several morphological characters that supported a close relationship between glyptodonts and the tiny extant fairy armadillos (Chlamyphori- nae). -

[email protected] ABSTRACT – The South American Teiidae fossil record is restricted to the Cenozoic, and the most conspicuous remains were found in Early to Late Miocene of Argentina and Middle Miocene of Colombia and Peru, all represented by Tupinambinae lizards. Here, we describe a right fragmentary dentary and one dorsal vertebra collected in the Solimões Formation at the Talismã locality, situated on the Purus River, in the southwestern Brazilian Amazonia (Late Miocene). The material is tentatively conferred to the extinct genus Paradracaena. It represents the first record of lizards for the Neogene southwestern Brazilian Amazonia. Key words: Teiidae, Tupinambinae, Solimões Formation, Miocene, southwestern Brazilian Amazonia. RESUMO – O registro fóssil de Teiidae para a América do Sul é restrito ao Cenozóico. Neste trabalho descreve-se um fragmento de dentário direito e uma vértebra dorsal coletados em sedimentos da Formação Solimões, na localidade Talismã, alto rio Purus, sudoeste da Amazônia brasileira. -

RESUMEN: En este trabajo se analiza la distribución de las especies actuales de armadillos registradas en el territorio de la provincia de Buenos Aires. La información proviene de trabajos de campo, revisión bibliográfica y colecciones de museo. Se ana- lizan aspectos temporales y espaciales. Se obtuvieron 401 registros georreferenciados para siete especies. Dasypus hybridus y Chaetophractus villosus son los armadillos más comunes y ampliamente distribuidos en la provincia. C. villosus parece estar siendo favorecida por las nuevas prácticas agrícolas y D. hybridus muestra una ampliación en el uso del hábitat. Para Zaedyus pichiy se registraron cambios en la distribución en la zona sureste de la provincia, cuya explicación más consensuada son los cambios en las condiciones climáticas. Para Chlamyphorus truncatus esta revisión dejó ver la necesidad de realizar estudios, ya que la zona en donde se distribuye está siendo intensamente degradada. La única especie actual extinta, Tolypeutes matacus, proba- blemente haya desaparecido por cambios climático-ambientales. Dasypus novemcinctus ha ingresando en la provincia hace pocos años, registrándose en la Ecorregión Delta e Islas del Paraná. -

Ankle structure in Eocene pholidotan mammal Eomanis krebsi and its taxonomic implications Inés Horovitz, Gerhard Storch, and Thomas Martin Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 50 (3), 2005: 545-548 Georges Cuvier (1798) established the classical concept of Edentata which included sloths, anteaters, armadillos, aardvarks, and pangolins. With the growing body of comparative morphological data becoming available during the nineteenth century, it was evident that Cuvier's “Edentata” was an artificial group (e.g., Huxley 1872). In his classical textbook,Weber (1904) excluded aardvarks and pangolins from the Edentata and put them in separate orders, Tubulidentata and Pholidota. Later on, fossil taxa were repeatedly added to and removed from Edentata, such as various xenarthran groups, taeniodonts, palaeanodonts, and gondwanatheres, but the South American Xenarthra always was considered as their core group. Even the living order Pholidota has been cited again as ?Edentata incertae sedis many years after Weber’s work (Romer 1966). The validity and extent of a higher taxon Edentata are still in dispute. In this discussion, the Middle Eocene pholidotan Eomanis and the putative xenarthran Eurotamandua from Grube Messel near Darmstadt (Germany) play an important role (Storch 1978, 1981, 2003; Rose and Emry 1993; Gaudin and Branham 1998; Rose 1999). Eomanis krebsi and Eurotamandua joresi have been subject to some discussion regarding their taxonomic distinction. It has been suggested that the only specimen known of Eo. krebsi might actually be a juvenile representative of the senior species E. joresi. A reexamination of the type specimen of Eo. krebsi has yielded some new observations regarding the identity of some of its ankle elements.
